this is the most awesome thing i've ever found on the interweb. i can't believe i found this game again!
Glad to see you smile, outspan. I'm guessing that no other abandonware site has the full CD version with movies and speech. HOTU has the floppy version.

Is there no-one who can help me with the patch I found here? I'm really having trouble understanding the conversations in-game... And with everybody shouting from the rooftops about this game, I would REALLY like to get it up and running!

You shouldn't need a patch to run the game. What system do you have, ie Windows 98 or XP? For both systems you need to unzip the game files to whichever drive you choose - usually C drive. But do not unzip them into a folder. Chose an unzip address that's something like this: C:\

They usually unzip together in a cluster, so it's not that hard to find all the files in the archive. Then you double click on 'install.exe' This installation program will ask where you want to install the files. If you have another drive, I'd choose it. Then, later, when the installation program asks the name of your CD rom drive, just type in the drive letter where you unzipped the original files - the ones you downloaded from Abandonia. Then the game knows where to look for these files so it can run properly.

You need to know the name of your sound card. If it's not a Sound Blaster card, and it's not one that is on the list that the installation program provides, then you could try selecting the 'sound blaster clone' option. You also need to know your i/o number, plus your IRQ. These settings enable the sound card to provide digital sound and music for the game. I've outlined how they can be found in a previous post in this thread.

If you have XP, you have one more step and that is configuring the game to run in dosbox. There are several step-by-step instructions on how to do that in this thread. If you have 98, then you can miss this step and just click on rtz.bat and the game should run for you.

Any more questions, just ask. The game is very stable and once the above is taken care of should run on any system.

Got it installed. Whew. Thanks to all for your patience in dealing with me!

But now I have another problem. : )

I have sound, but it's very choppy. I have picture, but it is also very choppy. And everything is painfully slow. There's some little thing I must be missing in the set-up portion of installing the game.

I mostly used the default settings for everything, soundwise (220, 7, etc.) and didn't change anything else.

One of the DOSbox windows says, "SDL:You are running 24 bpp mode, this will slow down things!" So perhaps I'm having a DOSbox issue?

I'll keep searching for answers, but help from Those Who Already Know would be much appreciated.

Haven't seen anything 'bout that in the DosBox configuration, but what we usually do to speed DosBox up or down, is play around with the CPU cycles. Press Ctrl-F11 for less and Ctrl-F12 for more cycles. 2333 cycles's usually enough to run it smoothly here. If that doesn't work, there's still frameskips to tweak, which is Ctrl-F7 and Ctrl-F8. Personally, I've never had to use those yet. The sound's fluent, but when you're moving from one part to the second, when you're walking in 3D, it does go kinda choppy. That's more the game itself, I think, concidering its age. Pretty well-done for that. Another reason why I think that's the game itself, is that other animations, like the vulture or the guy in the crystal ball, aren't choppy.

Thanks, Tiki. I figured that out after a while but it was nice to know I was right. : )

Now the problem is, the dwarven mines are *really* hard to navigate with all the frame skipping. And the screen will black out during the trip, as if things weren't bad enough. I can't tell when I need to change from clicking right to clicking left.

Argh! At least now I've got a "Want some rye? Course ya do!" ringtone for my phone. : )

Here. I'll answer my own question:

Look at the tracks, not the walls. Looking at the tracks makes it easier to see when an intersection is coming up. Then click right or left until the cart turns and you know you've done it.

Ha!

I have WinXp. And my soundcard is not on the list.
Before, I installed it with Soundblaster (the first one), I/O 220 IRQ 7 DMA 1, and it worked! The sound was great, until I arrived at the lighthouse... The voice was really messed up.
Now I tried your soundblaster clone suggestion, but that didn't work at all. I don't know if I got the numbers right. This is what I found:

soundcard: C-Media AC97 Audio Device
I/O D400-D4FF --> I used 400
I/O D800-D83F
DMA FA801000-FA8011FF --> didn't know what to use, but tried 1 and 8
DMA FA802000-FA8020FF
IRQ 17 --> used 17, obviously...

Any help...? And do I have to 'uninstall' the game before adjusting these settings? Because I didn't.
Oh yeah, I run the game with VDMS.

Howdy! I have a strange thing happening when I go to install it through dosbox. whether I do so from a folder or straight from hard drive, after typing install it sorta starts to go into a blue screen, then dosbox shuts itself down. No error report, no explanation. Maybe my comps just funny, but do you have any suggestions? Thanks

dOllee, I'm sorry but I just don't know what to advise. My frame of reference is only with the equipment I use which is a SB Live card and Win98. I've never used Dosbox or VDM. All I can suggest is that you experiment with settings and card names until you find one that works for you.

EDIT:
No, after changing a setting you definitely don't have to reinstall the game nor should you need to reboot.
