You need to know the name of your sound card.* If it's not a Sound Blaster card, and it's not one that is on the list that the installation program provides, then you could try selecting the 'sound blaster clone' option.* You also need to know your i/o number, plus your IRQ.
I have WinXp. And my soundcard is not on the list.
Before, I installed it with Soundblaster (the first one), I/O 220 IRQ 7 DMA 1, and it worked! The sound was great, until I arrived at the lighthouse... The voice was really messed up.
Now I tried your soundblaster clone suggestion, but that didn't work at all. I don't know if I got the numbers right. This is what I found:

soundcard: C-Media AC97 Audio Device
I/O D400-D4FF --> I used 400
I/O D800-D83F
DMA FA801000-FA8011FF --> didn't know what to use, but tried 1 and 8
DMA FA802000-FA8020FF
IRQ 17 --> used 17, obviously...

Any help...? And do I have to 'uninstall' the game before adjusting these settings? Because I didn't.
Oh yeah, I run the game with VDMS.
