![]() I found a nasty malware on my computer. AntiVir seems to be a very good program since it's the only one which managed to find it;

I was wondering if this malware been able to open/close ports and, if it is the case, if anyone could point to me a program which would allow me to open or close ports in Windows. I'm pretty clueless on this point, so any help would be welcome. I always had a problem with almost all programs, and this problem is that I can't upload files. I have this problem with mIRC, I have this problem with MSN, I have that problem with plenty of other programs... If it is possible I would want to solve this problem too because I think they are related. |

![]() Well the only way i know to control the permissions of the programs to use the ports, is using a firewall... like Data suggested.
Maybe something else from the WinXP one... |

The firewall blocks new progs disallowing you to use 'em. That's probably your best bet. |

![]() Probably, but there is also something else. I know if Windows have ports closed you can't use them. The problem here is that those programs worked fine and then, all of a sudden, they stopped working. So either the WinXP firewall decided to block them all of a sudden, or the ports been closed.
Anybody knows how to work with the built in firewall or to play with the Windows ports? |

![]() To best thing to do with the Windows XP ICF is to turn it off, as it does not filter and block outbound connections. Just download and install one of the following free firewalls - kerio (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html), outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/index.php), and You will notice a huge difference.
Next, download this software: * http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ - update and scan; * http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html - update, scan, immunize; * http://80.237.140.193/downloads/hijackthis_199.zip - turn off all the software that You can (instant messengers, browsers, etc.), scan, post here the log. Regards. EDIT Furthermore, You cannot forget about updated antivirus (I recommend Kaspersky) and updating Your system with Win critical patches (Windows Update...). |
