![]() I have very strange problem. I was trying to run Settlers 2 Gold edition under VDMS under winXP and if I set another resolution than 640x480, for example 800x600 the monitor shows only interferences and OSD says: "OUT OF RANGE" and some frequencies. Im convinced that this is very common bug under winXP.
I think that problem has probably something to do with winXP and maybe not with VDMS. Can somebody lend me a help in this. I will be really grateful for any hints. |

![]() Do you have a TFT (flatscreen) monitor? That's a common problem when a game defaults to an unsupported refrsh rate, above 75Hz I believe. One solution would be to run the games in dosbox in window mode.

![]() No, I have a classical CRT monitor Imagequest Q790. I dont know what to do
I give you a specific description: If I run the game by VDMS, I can start the map and play in 640x480 !60Hz! which is suicide. In !60 Hz! in spite of the fact my monitor can run it under 150 Hz , that i have overriden in the windows settings, which is alarming. One more thing: I gave it a try under DOSBox 0.63, and result was very strange. I can play the game in 800x600 85Hz which I cannot under VDMS, but its rather frustrating to play it at this speed. i would like to fix the problem and play it under VDMS in 800x600 or 1024x768. Conclusion: VDMS 640x480 possible 800x600 impossible due to the monitor failure "out of range" 1024x768 impossible - nothing happens(black screen) DOSBox 0.36 640x480 possible (slow) 800x600 possible (ssslllooowwweeerrrr) frustrating 1024x768 impossible - nothing happens (same thing as under the VDMS) Thank U in advance, I have done my best regarding the specification of the problem. My computer spec.: OS: winXP sp1 Proc.: Athlon XP 2600+ RAM: 512 MB 400 Mhz corsair Graphic card: Leadtek nVidia GeForce TI4200 64 mb 8xAGP and latest video drivers and directX9.0b |

![]() I have no idea what might cause those problems with the refreshrates. Another possible fix would be to use a program like powerstrip, which in theory, can force a screen to a certain resolution/refresh rate. It dosn't work for me though, but it might for you.
Concerning Dosbox however, your PC should be able to any game with it pretty fine. Did you try adjusting the clock cycles with ctrl+F11/F12? btw. newest Direct X is 9.0c, you might want to update that for newer games. |

![]() I was trying that thing with forcing a screen to a specific refresh rate, but it works fine only under games outside the DOSBox or VDMS. In these two apps I didnt notice any sign of forcing the refresh rate to a specific value.
Concerning DOSBox the speed is not satisfactory even after the manipulating of cycles. I can guess 3fps and thats not like smooth movement under the winXP. But thank for hint I would be grateful for any other advice. |
