Default Xcom:UFODef and Vista

Hi there,

I have some problems and have gotten as far as I can get on my own. I noticed alot of other threads regarding XCOM and skimmed them, not seeing a solution to my predicament I decided to post here and see if anyone is patient and willing to help me out.

I have a laptop with Microsoft Vista as my OS. My graphics card is an NVIDIA. I have been trying to get XCOM to work on my computer. So far I have downloaded the Windows version and the DOS version from Abandonia.

Windows Version problem:
Program runs and graphics look fine whenever there is a static image with no mouse scrolling. Whenever I scroll the mouse or any sort of animation occurs in the game, the graphics blur making the game unplayable.

Attempted solutions:
1) I've toyed with compatibility mode and all the options there
2) Yes I ran the yellow sun icon exe
3) Tried some computer slowing programs, Turbo and CPUkiller, neither had an impact
4)I'm wondering if it has something to do with the graphics card

DOS Version:
Using DOS box in the geoscape the only problem is no sound and music. However, upon starting a mission the game freezes and I get a black line on the screen, like a cursor prompt. I can create more such lines by hitting the enter key.

Attemped solutions:
1)Same as the windows version

Any help would be appreciated.

Run the game's setup and set it to use the right soundcard. Per default, DOSBox emulates Sound Blaster 16 (backwards compatibile with versions Pro 2, Pro, 2 and 1), IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220.

Is that what you are asking for?

Would that be a possible cause of the main problem I described? (not the lack of sound and music but the game freezeup on switching over from the geoscape map.)

I configured the sound the way you described but it doesn't appear to have made any difference.

Are you sure you've unpacked all contents of the archive?

I will suppose you unarchived the game in:
C:\users\jon\desktop\oldgames\xcom\

Your lines:
Mount C C:\users\jon\desktop\oldgames
mount d C:\users\jon\desktop\oldgames\xcom -t cdrom
c:
cd xcom
cdsetup d:

This will launch the soundsetup.
Choices that work:

Sound FX
Soundblaster
Base port: 220
IRQ: 7
DMA: 1
4 sounds channels

Music:
SB AWE32

Run game in dosbox with ufo

BTW, music is ripped, only FX sounds.

Dosraider, you're talking about X-Com: Apocalypse.

Happyfanatic has problems with X-Com: UFO Defense (alias UFO: Enemy Unknown).

Whoooopsy .......

[Edit]
Just checked:
UFO - Enemy Unknown_DOS.zip
So that's the one, isn't it?

Xcom apocalypse is XCOM3.

So: no whoopsy.

[Edit²]
BTW, just tried again from scratch.
happyfanatic, delete your gamefolder, and restart from scratch.
Your lines:

Mount C C:\users\jon\desktop\oldgames
mount d C:\users\jon\desktop\oldgames\xcom -t cdrom
c:
cd xcom
ufocd

Seems the setup screws some things up, don't run it.
Simply use those mount lines and run with ufocd, you'll have sound FX and music.
Dosbox version 0.72, default config.
