Default Could Someone Help Me With Rick Ribbit?

I posted about this Rick Ribbit game a couple months ago. I have the game and it's in perfect condition, and the installation runs fine. But when I try to play it, it actually froze up our Windows XP. I can't get it to run. Is there someone I could possibly mail it to who would know how to make it compatible with XP? I don't want to make it available as a download (legal convictions), I just want to be able to play it.

If it's the same Rick Ribbit I think it is, why aren't you playing it in DOSBox? RR is an older program, and not likely to run well under Windows XP, even with the compatibility modes.

Grab DOSBox from here, and use one of the guides written in this very forum, or here (one I wrote for the good folks at OCR a couple years ago) to get it installed and running.

If DOSBox gives you trouble once everything's installed, you can ask here and one of us will try and help you out.

Default answer: use DOSBox or VDMSound.

I've tried DOSbox. The computer responds with saying that Rick Ribbit can only be run in windows, not dos. But I haven't tried VDMSound yet, does anyone know where I can download it?

VDMS:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/
But I wouldn't set my hopes too high on VDMS, it's mainly a sound solution, not an emulator.(And it's discontinued).

Other possible solution, IF RR is a w3.x game: setup W3.x in dosbox 0.72, works pretty swell.
A complete howto is@ http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9405
Looks as a whole hassle, but it's pretty easy in fact, and runs extremely good.

Also: look once again in your game folder if there isn't a dos launcher, many of those older games had a dos and a win launcher, ya never know .....

If you can put the game on zshare or so and PM me the link, I could try it in VPC also.(W98-W3.11-and a lot of other OS)

You might try another trick: Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 (or 2007, or whatever is the most recent version) with an older version of Windows (95 or 98, preferably).

If it's a Windows game then before anything else, try to change the compatibility options. It might just work.

To do that, you need to right click on the program you want to run and go in it's properties. Then go in the compatibility tab.

Try to run it as a Win95 and/or Win98 application. If it still doesn't work, they you can also try to run it in 256 colors with both 95 and 98. There is also some other options to mess with in the misc tab, but those are usually non-critical options.

I doubt very much that VDMSound will do anything for a Windows game.

If this is the game made around 1992 on floppy disk, then there should be a DOS executable somewhere in the folder where it was installed. If there isn't, try installing it with DOSBox. I have a few programs that won't install a DOS executable unless you specifically run the installation setup in a DOS environment (my copy of MechWarrior 2 is one such program).

It seems like a pain to reinstall it, but if it can be run in DOSBox more easily, then it's worth it.

I don't mean to gravedig, but I thought it would be wasteful to create another thread.

First, I'd like to say thanks to Dave for helping me find the game. I somehow forgot to do that, but Dave, thanks a lot for your help!

Second, I've pretty much given up trying to get this game to work. But I had an idea. If someone is out there who would be willing to try and make this game playable on XP or Vista, I could send them all the game files right off the Rick Ribbit CD. Things were so simple back then, weren't they? So anyway, if someone out there wants to give it a shot, I can upload the files on my Rick Ribbit CD and give them a link to the download. I'd appreciate anyone who would be interested in bringing this game back to playability.
