Wow!

Mr. Jobs actually did what he said he was going to do... well sort of.
He convinced EMI to sell its music catalogue free of nasty crippling DRM!
Admittedly the "premium" (uncrippled) content will be sold at 130% more than usual Ipod-only-compatible music tracks. On a slightly better note, if you have already bought DRM'd tracks that are now available without it you effectively don't have to pay for the song again to get it upgraded.

It's a step in the right direction

(Hopefully a certain Mr. Gates will take notice, particularly in light of the horrifically bound and gagged Vista)

I only buy music on CD's, mp3's are not worth buying IMO.

Fair enough, but DRM is not unique to music files. Video, digital documentation etc. can and have all been crippled in such a way in the past.

Note: The USA government even places DRM in it's public release documents, when the pdf is opened it can only be read, not altered, despite the fact that these documents are under public license.

20mb per song? no way. i like mp3 for the filesizes and the compression (at least 160kbps bit rate sounds good IMO)

Himmler, have you ever compared Apple's Lossless to FLAC? I've been meaning to do that.

And JJXB, If you're doing 160kbps, at least make it a good format, not that mp3 crap.

So far, I've bought 23 songs from the iTS, I wanted to wait for them to go Lossless, but I broke down and just got in there some months ago. The quality sucks, but that's what online music stores are like.

There's not much difference in quality unless all of you guys have 10 000$ hifi systems, have incredibly good hearing or just read to much magazines.

well, run 128 and then 192 kbps mp3 in a row(not techno or whatever..) and you will hear the difference

You're taking it to the extremes, of course you're not going to listen to music in 32kbps or 64kbps and compare, but the more you go above the less difference there is.
Is there really that much of a difference between FLAC and mp3? I don't think so I think it's more nitpicking. But maybe it's just me and my lack of HD space. If you're that much of an audophile then you should go for LP's really, that's a whole other experience.
