I don't have enough room on hard disk for ISO's (it's a 40GB HD), so meh, otherwise I'd probably be using them more myself.

No dude, CD Bremse just stops your CD drive after you done accessing data, not while reading the disc. You know that after using the CD it keeps spinning to no avail with absolutely no reason... now CD Bremse stops the CD after it is done with accessing data on it. Of course if you need some data from the CD again it won't be too quick because the CD must spin up to speed again...

But with ISOs I don't have to give that a thought at all, do I?

It's even better to use a crack for all games, cause remounting is sometimes annoying. Sure, it's cool to have the full game virtual copy, but space sometimes is wasted this way. The best way as I see it (and have done it) is to just take the installation and crack it then just burn it onto a disk - then, no space used and you can play straight away without the need to install or copy the mounted image then mounting and etc. I've done this with a few games, like Vivisector. Runs great for me. When I get my 1TB HDD then it will be the mounting again .

Well, the link is pretty clear about CD Bremse's "limit[ing] maximum reading speed". The other way around you'd make the noise sound less often, but its peak volume would be the same. Of course slower might be fast enough for some uses though, and the noise would be greatly reduced.

As far as I know HDDs are indeed much faster and less noisy than CDDs, that would be two reasons for doing that even if you own the original, aside from avoiding damage to the original.

Well, right now i have 500 GB space on 2 drives. One is the main drive where i keep the system and programs, while the other is the storage, where i keep everything else (ISO's included)
This is a good setup for good speed on a IDE-based system. The coputer can access all system-files, while not getting stoped from accessing the ISO's at the same time

If horror stikes, and the computer needs to swap on the dirve, it's always good to let it swap elsewhere from where it's reading..... :tai:

ISO's are good since (as stated above) no need to reach for the CD/DVD-pile and the discs are not getting scratched. Infact i keep most discs in my basement, where it's cool and dark.
Cracking has the downside that patches usualy doesn't work, so upgrading a game from 1.0 -> 1.3 is impossible, as you need to hunt for a new crack.

ISO FTW!

(Legal note: Here it's legal for me to make a personal backup and share it with my family and close FRIENDS if i like. Also a recent case showed that running cracked software on your personal computer would be legal as long as you own the original copy, regerdless of what the ToS sais about modifying the software)

lucky git. in the uk the laws conflict because one says your allowed to make personal backups and another says your not allowed to circumvent copy protection so what am i meant to do if i want to make a personal backup of a copy protected game?

true example:
i bought starcraft+brood war and i backed them up as ISO's. starcraft needed cracking to use those copies and at a later date, while taking the starcraft cd out of the case to play it, the cd snapped and i had to resort to the copy. what i did was technically illegal since i had to crack starcraft but i wasn't prepared to buy another copy of the same pack since i paid to get a legal copy of the game to play it.
