You're screwing up somewhere, it works for 99.9999999999999% of the dosbox users, so you can safely assume you did a mistake.
Post a screenshot, will ya?
Taking a screenie in dosbox= CTRL+F5
And check your paths/folders once again.

Yep, that's pretty much the safe (and embarassing) assumption I've been making for all these troubles. One trouble though, I think I can place on the 'puter. Get this; In Dosbox, hit Ctrl & F5, nothing. So, here's a snapshot.

And thanks again for all this help.

Rightclick on the \oldgames\ folder and check in 'properties' the correct and full path.

And if you can't get a screenie with CTRL+F5 in dosbox
( should be saved in \program files\dosbox-0.72\captures\ )
then it indeed means that dosbox doesn't has the needed write permissions outside your personal folders.

BTW, another question, do you by any chance have another partition on your harddisk? A D: or so? This could also be a simple solution to your problems.

Well, got past the "directory doesn't exist" bit, but same old trouble now. Loading a game, saving a character, doesn't work. It seems like you create and save a character, but the data isn't there and the game doesn't start either way. Tried the D drive move, same thing. Checked the properties for the folder and Read Only was checked. Unchecked it, applied, closed, reopened properties, still checked. Apparently, even though I'm the admin for the computer, I'm not allowed to make that kind of change or have (*pff*) enough permission to properly play a dos game. *sigh* A buddy just told me on the phone to turn off sharing for the folder, reboot, then reset sharing and security which should clear the "read only" attribute. I guess I'll give that shot, check back here one more time in case some advice shows up and my friend's suggestion doesn't do a thing, then if nothing has worked by now, give the heck up.

'Kay, I give up. No more directory problem, no more read only troubles - permissions SEEM fine but are obviously not and I don't know what to do, doesn't appear to matter where the files are contained its the same trouble of no character I create saving nor will the game allow me to just begin.

Don't suppose there's an easy user-friendly, Krynn For Dummies version out there yall know of?

what are some reasons it might not be saving information?

Wrong paths, wrong mounts, wrong cfg files, no write permissions ..... such things, even typos, a hidden space in the name folder, whatevers and whatnots.
Can have several reasons.

Okay, so I didn't give up. I reeeeeeeally want to play through these games.

After that issue with being unable to do a printscreen in dosbox, I figured it was a permissions issue all around. Well I've got the permissions issue taken care of entirely, full control for everything, I can now see the .sfx & .who files for the characters within the oldgames folder, can do printscreens and find them in the capture folder.

But I still can't load a character or begin the game. Right back to nothing. Any other starting menu option I can select & go into. Can create all the characters I like, disable the mouse til the cows come home, exit to Dos as I please, but whenever I choose to add characters to party I get bupkis.

Am I a lost cause?

Ok, let's start over shall we?
I've retested the game to be 100% sure of what I gonna say here ....

First of all: delete ALL your old game folders, something is completely wrong anyway.
Keep your c:\users\your name\oldgames\

Reunzip the original downloaded archive, in that archive there is one folder named COK, you must end with:
c:\users\your name\oldgames\cok\

Be sure to use a good unzipper, that can handle the directory structure in the archive, not the Vista one, that's too basic.
7zip does a nice job:
http://www.7-zip.org/
Something as:

Run dosbox, mount c:\users\your name\oldgames\ as C: in dosbox, do a
cd cok
start

That's it, all works flawless, game save and all, no need to edit the cfg file or whatever.

The game, after creating/adding/saving and a restart:

'Covenant' player loaded:

Folder structure with saved games:

No problems whatsoever, so : start over from scratch friend.
