i get like 5 letters of "families in south africa who need help in order to transfer money from their dead cousin who left 5 billion dollars for them but they cannot take the money because they have no bank account, so please help us" per week, so maybe i'll help some of those, what do you guys think

Uh, there aren't really any exchange controls here any more. So maybe ... perhaps ... they just might be trying to cheat you?
