Click the Switch Editor Mode button top right of the gray editor field (The "A/A" one). If you want it to be permanent, go to your UCP->[Edit Options]->{Miscellaneous Options}->[Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls] -- [] = select and/or click, {} = paragraph.

Unhappy The nameless wonder

I'm in the middle of this game right now and realized I was supposed to give my hero a name at the beginning. Somehow I missed that part. Now I'm doomed to remain the "unknown hero." Unless I start over, that is. Damn it!

"Unknown Hero" is not the worst name to have. Reminds me more of of western than of a RPG, but who cares

When you import your character into the next game you'll be able to change your name

I just finished playing the whole series (not including the 5th game which I've never played *sob!*) all the way through with one character imported into all the games, starting as a fighter and ending up a paladin. Now I'm working on doing that again, but with a magic user. I have to say, it's MUCH easier playing as a fighter/paladin, or even as a thief (my favorite class to play when I was a kid), it's hard to earn enough money to buy potions to replenish your health and mana, and geez are mana potions expensive! It's also just tough to get around due to the fact that magic users aren't very good up against monsters, and the one combat spell you can learn is pricey.

A couple of tips for anyone playing as a magic user character:

1. Sleep at Erana's Peace every night, you'll save money by not paying to sleep in the inn, and your health, stamina and mana will be fully replenished after a full night's sleep, unlike sleeping in some other places.

2. Eat fruit from Erana's Peace as often as you can, you'll save cash by not relying on rations or meals at the inn.

3. Play Mage's Maze with Erasmus, it's the best way to practice your spells, and increase your magic prowess. If anyone needs help in figuring out how to play this weird game, let me know, it took a bit of head scratching before I finally figured it out.

4. Work on building up your strength and weapon use as well as your magic skills and intelligence. Killing the tougher monsters (Cheetaurs & Trolls) is the best way to get a good amount of steady cash to pay for those pricey mana potions you'll want to get, so you shouldn't neglect to make your hero strong, even though he's not a fighter. Working in the stables gives a small amount of cash and helps increase your strength too.

5. Buy your health, stamina and mana potions from the Healer, and not from Zara the owner of the magic shop. The Healer sells them cheaper.

If you really work up your flame dart spell, it does massive damage, by the later stages I could kill more ogres in a night than I did with a fighter.

I'm very glad I tried Quest for Glory and now have finished the first one in the VGA version. Now, I am going to play the second one, but the remake, which makes the game a lot easier with the new interface. English is not my native language, so the parser interface isn't that much fun.

Thanks for providing this fantastic game and I hope :-) when I will have played the third one, the fourth will also be available, so my character can improve further.

QFG2 Remake is reviewed over on Reloaded, if you are interested.

Thanks for the hint!

The only drawback mentioned (combat system) I can so far not validate. First, I haven't played that far and second, what the handbook says seems very promising. Especially compared to the combat system in the first Quest for Glory (VGA). I often had to click twice or trice or ... to make my hero doing what I want.
Maybe I should have increased cycles in dosbox even more.
