I think that the first time is to get to the intermediate page, it stops people stealing links.

I think it's because the protection.... and because of you to click on adds to support the site! k:

If the ads were just on the site, you could ignore them while you download, but as you are partially forced to see them, they are much more effective. This is a common marketing technique.
