Yes, after some time I found that quite anoying too....and the travelling to islands is also very anoying.....I came to the same conclusion - this could've been great, but ends up being just average - though it wins some of it back when playing multi-player.....

Just wanted to say thanks for all of your archival work.
I gave this game and computer to my sister's kids in 95 or 96 when I bought my first pentium ( cheep Christmas gift). This, Falcon 3.0 and Wolfstine3D were about all I played. I know I played more then one complete FE campaign against AI without leaving the house.

In the last few years I have quit the hardware arms race. I'm just now going back to the early 90s games and realizing how I enjoyed them. I'm also realizing how the good ones influenced my gaming habits since.


To me the 3 keys things of playing aginst the AI are : (no particular order)

#1 Keep building heros. More then once a game was saved by a new hero returning from a death defying quest with magic that saved the empire.

#2 Don't be afraid to build masses of foot soldgers if you feel threatened by another rlelm.

#3 Massed archers can be much more effective then magic.
