do you have plenty of fonts installed ? maybe it messes up with it ?! or maybe the ram-usage of this pre-win-xp-word is completely programed for Win 95 which had a different method to give ram to the apps.

Well one reason would be microsoft would want you to get a later version of offic since they are greedy and they wolud not want you to keep using an old version
