![]() How know that a software firewall works by filtering internet traffic with your processor, but how does a hardware firewall do its job?

![]() Basically the same way one on your computer works, but instead of filtering between your network interface and your applications it just filters between both its network interfaces. It has a processor to do the crunching and provide a configuration interface, and a bit of memory (normally only a few KB) to store the config. Then it just processes packets and either forwards or drops them based on its configuration.

On the other hand, the hardware firewall at work is a good choice because I can't trust my users not to mess with anything that gets installed on their machines. With a separate box controlling traffic, I'm in control. |
