Definitely. For a single computer, a good software firewall (that gets kept patched up-to-date) will give you the most flexibility.
On the other hand, the hardware firewall at work is a good choice because I can't trust my users not to mess with anything that gets installed on their machines. With a separate box controlling traffic, I'm in control.
