Well, I think, title screen always the same. Look on window title... if you are in window, sorry.
Well, search for version number somewhere on main screen. It must be 1.3.
Simple check is list of your cities. It was introduced only in 1.3. (And heroes - that you definitely have - was introduced in 1.2).

I won game on impossible difficulty, "dry" map and maximum amount of opponents. I assuring you that secondary planes are not very difficult when you have enough resources to support 3-4 boosted heroes.

But it was on 1.2. 1.3 quite unplayable for me right now due frequent crashes. Authors promised patch soon.
Do you using spells, custom perks and hero items to boost your armies? Without it games really can be quite too hard.
