There are plenty problems indeed with newer notebooks.
Reason is the OEM versions of the controller chips (mainly SATA, but not only), they need specific drivers for them -(read: non -fuc*ing- standard ones)- , It seems we go back to the incompatible hardware times, and that's a huge step back.
Same advise as in an other (parallel) topic: try the live CD first, gives you a good indication if Ubuntu can run on your laptop. (Always try the latest version, of course).
