It really depends. Your laptop _could_ (emphasis on could) have an exchangeable CPU - then it's only a matter of getting a compatibile CPU.
If the CPU is integrated with the mobo (cause that how some laptops were built), you can experiment with overclocking it a bit - doubt that you'll manage anything too high, but you can acquire a 10-20% improvement.
Note, however, that the speed of the motherboard (most importantly, the FSB) can also cap out the maximum performance.
