Very good game. I really enjoy myself, but ...

First, the battle mode is really hard to master. It's particularly difficult to target properly (with the knights, I have never killed anything other than dragons).

After, my keyboard is a muck and Dos-Box doesn't really help. So with two keys pressed, very often the third doesn't work (no diagonal attacks ). In those conditions it isn't worth playing with another human player.

Try VDm, maybe it can help playing the game.

Starting from where I left off in the previous post, I tried undoing the settings from DarkCoiote's post and then just adjusted the cycles. I found that the game would work from 12,000 to 16,000 cycles. Thinking that was strange, I decided to use completely default settings and adjust the cycles only. I found that the game would work from 14,000 to 17,000 cycles. Note that these are results produced by my system and will not be the same due to differences in cpu performance.

At Last! This one has worked for me (after banging my head against the wall for almost an hour).

Thanks!

I found a way, so that Archon Ultra works always when started with dosbox 0.65.

First get Archon Ultra from here:http://retrogames.intranet.hu
(under "játékok" -> "[a]") The archive contains another executable, it's Version 1.0 .
Start it with DosBox 0.65.
Set cycles to at least 13000 and it starts everytime, below it may freeze with a black screen.
You may also increase the cycles after it freezes to continue.

After many hours of struggle I got this game working almost correctly. The only problem seems to be that sometimes the game freezes during gameplay, thus making it unplayable.

Maybe something to tinker with.

I had a similar problem with Turrican II on dosbox 0.67. (the freezing part)

The game froze up when you exited a level. My sollution to this was to run down the cycles to 1 and then back up to 6000. Usually the sound "sparked" around 3000 cycles and it would continue normally after that.

If it doesn't work the first time, try it three times more or so. if that doesn't work then forget you ever read this.

NOTE: you'd do well to set the Cycles in your conf. to cycleup=1000 (saves time) Use cycleup=500 on older systems.

Try Dosbox 0.70 with its default config file. The conf file you posted is from 0.63 or older.
0.70 has some fixes for this game.

Yeah, I've been meaning with 7.0 coming out to try this game again. I just haven't had the time. If it works I'll consider having someone edit the review. (I don't know if I have the permissions any more.)

It works. Archon Ultra works in DOSBox 7.0 with no problems at all. Gonna have to edit the review.

Default Archon: Evolution

I'm a fan of Ultra, but I always preferred the original 8-bit tbh. The battle aspect of Ultra didn't work for me, although I did like the double attack.

There's a free Windows remake of the original game, and it can be found at http://archon.curvenet.co.uk

Network play isn't implemented yet, but they're apparently working on it. Can't wait...
