that's a daft comparison though, Discworld is for adults whereas HP is for kids/teenagers.

i used to read discworld when i was a kid. (well early teens)
disturbingly the only person in rl who has ever urged me to read a harry potter book is 30!!!!
he loves his fantasy though, and i think was slightly hypnotised by all the media coverage an just wanted to see what all the fuss is about.
i think i read like a page or summin and was just totally underwhelmed.

That's not entirely true, I started reading discworld when I was 14 or something.
Ofcoarse it's easier to understand all the little references in the discworld books when you're older.

Well yeah, but you know what I mean - it's aimed at adults (more and more so as he goes along, I find) whereas HP is firmly a kids' book.

I couldnt be bothered chpoosing a best but it would be one of the first three as they are the shortest. I wouldn't be surprised if the 6th is 2000 pages long.
Sigh...

:ranting:

People seem to think that longer books are necessarily better than shorter ones, given LotR's sudden renaissance among younger readers. The HP-books keep getting longer and longer, and there's no point in it. There are quite a number of pointless and rather uninteresting scenes in the books that are only worth reading if you're incredibly drawn into the story. Me and some friends actually suspect that one of the chapters in the last book will be named, "Harry takes a crap". [/b][/quote]
Hmmmmm.

I'm not sure whether you are agreeing with me or not.

But still longer books can be good if the content is worth reading and relates the story. I can't remember much of the later two books as I have only read them once cause of their length and some things that are irrelevant to the story, I remember in the last book, she wrote about every single exam Harry took at the end of the year when only his last exam was really worth reading, as that was when the something happened to keep the story rolling, she spent too much time on his previous exams that was not needed.

Hmm... I think that it is a little unfair to compare Discworld and HP.

If anyone has read the Barry Trotter books then they deserve a pat on the back. They're bloody hilarious.

Also, there's a really good sort-of kid's book called The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rats, which is fatastic and kicks HP back to the stone age really.

Yes, that's one of 3 Discworld novels for children he's written, and the other 2 are better methinks.
