ISO file is disk image, but in this case you don't need that. Sorry, I was under impression that you have original disk.

This game require only to recognize that your system has a CD, it does not matter what is in it.

Easiest solution in your case is to create dummy folder on your home directory (for example 'temp' folder - /users/filipe/temp ) and then mount this folder as CD (mount d -t cdrom /users/filipe/temp).

Start the game, and execute heroes. It should work and you should see attached screen.

Default Balance issues mentioned in review

The Review mentions that the game has balance issues, and specified that the 'mountain' race has the easiest go of it?

I am uncertain if this is a translation issue? But surely he/she was referring to the 'Warlock' Race? As it is generally agreed that they have the best creature lineup.

I would strongly disagree that this imbalance haunted the series forever after that; HoMM2 shows significantly more balance... until ghosts are introduced in the expansion.

HoMM3 Is a rather well-balanced game; In this case there is only one race that's clearly got a weaker force, and that is the Necropolis. With weaker earlier units and a weaker L7 unit.

HoMM1 is a great game and has a lot of 'charm' you could say, which its sequel somewhat keeps, and seems to degrade slightly into a turn-based 4X game by HoMM3; and the instalments 4 and 5 in the series you start wondering if the developers felt like necromancers who revived the same skeleton a few too many times.

There could probably be a really good debate as to which HoMM is the best;
As to the most fun 'light' adventure/exploration game, i'd go with this one for the original novelty 'high'. Just the fun of sending heroes out and finding all the goodies on the map, and then plotting how best to take out that enemy hero who's making a huge nuisance of itself back home.

EDIT: About CD ROM issues people have, in dosbox I have found that simply mounting an actual cd rom with this seems to work seamlessly; If the game doesn't work there are probably other set-up and configuration tweaks that need to be made. As far as the simulated DOS environment goes, this game is one of the more picky ones.

I'd highly recommended a frontend like "Dos Box Game Launcher" to help you keep configurations for individual games saved and together in one place, so once you have it all set up you need only click on the name and play.

Guys, i've got a problem running HOMM - while i'm at the global map and moving heroes/building etc - everything's perfect, but when in battle - the game crashes after 3 or 4 moves. It's really disappointing, 'cause i miss HOMM1 greatly what can cause such crashing?

try the windows version (also available on the site). it works great on win2000, even on very old notebooks.

the crash could be caused by bad download (error in file). but hard to say for sure if there are no error messages.

Hey guys i was wondering if someone could help me. I just finished reading all 27 pages of posts and have attempting to get HoMM1(dos) to run through dosbox.

i am using dosbox .72 and running it on my Notebook PC with Vista OS. I have run about 20 other games through dosbox and this is the only one give me a problem. I have tried all the variations listed here and it still does not seem to work.

I use the commands:

z:>e: -t cdrom e:\ c:\users\blah\blah blah
*Tells me it is mounted as a cdrom*
z:>e:
E:>heroes.exe
*then it tells me i have performed an illegal operation.*

Any help would be much appreciated.

mount d e:\ -t cdrom
mount c c:\users\blah\blah blah
c:
cd blah blah
blahblahblah

And some more blahblahblah.

And add a blah where needed.

You hardly can expect us to write it all out for you if you're even too lazy to post something else than blahblah yourself.
