I have nothing againt swearing except excessive and constant use of it, there are many people at my school who swear constantly and when they aren't swearing they are speaking in a foreign language.

But there are times when it is completely inapropriate. One such time was while I was in class and we were doing technical drawing and I had a bad ruler with indents and I didn't notice, anyway my drawing was ruined because of it and I basically just yelled out "oh muck" in a quiet room, teacher wasn't impressed.

Most times I swear are when I'm taken by surprise and I swear as an instantaneous reaction, as what happened with the ruler, but I try to swear as little as possible at all other times.

I suppose you also have to take into account that some words are slang, I'm sure you can all think of some. So it aso depends in what sense you use some words, I'm not saying they should be words you use frequently because they are slang and that it is proper to use them in that way, but it does have to be taken into account.

Yes it is better than using them as some random useless insult or just throwing them into the middle of a sentence for the hell of it. Although I have used them in that way before many times.

I remember a lovely passage I read in one of the books by Arthur C. Clarke (but I don't remember which book).

Here's the summary of that passage:
It was on a planet that was settled by people from Earth. The planet itself was almost a paradise. People were always nice and friendly and polite. They had no swearing words. So if something heavy fell on someones foot, he'd just grab it and start dumbly looking around in pain, for the lack of the swear words!

What I'm trying to say is this - there are several kinds of swearing. One is almost like a reflex, like saying ouch... This one is actually very healthy, because it's a vent, to let out some frustration. I usually swear, when I'm really angry at myself (or a thing - like if a car won't start...). I guess it's better to swear, then to start breaking stuff.
But there's another kind of swearing - that's very abusive. It's calling people names, insulting people... That's bad.
Because of all the tabus connected to swearing, swear words are used in comedy. When a stereotypical classy guy swears (like a sophisticated judge) that's supposed to be funny, because it's something you wouldn't expect from someone in such a possition.
Unfortunately all these kind made yet another kind of swearing. Swearing - because it's in fashion. Because it's something you shouldn't be doing - everybody started doing it. Because it's something that worked funny - everybody started doing it. Because it made you feel better - everybody started doing it. Because everybody started doing it - it became a regular thing and you're an outsider if you don't swear! The extreme case would be getho-talk. If your every fifth word isn't a swear one - then something's wrong with you.

I know it's a long post, but I hope you'll read through it anyway!

yes, sebatianos, i second that!!

when something is annoying me, i swear, preferrably when i'm alone..

but when someone is trying to wreck up my mood, i either try hard
to discuss the issue in a mostly civilized way or i just turn away and avoid
this person.

of course there are certain situations when i'm forced to drop my good behaviour,
but these are quite rare.

Yeah I agree with most of the points about swearing, as long as swearing isn't used excessively, or if it's a person trying to make you mad, that's when I feel it can be a problem.
