Alright, potentially stupid question.

What do the express settings for the elevators actually do? I can't tell much of a difference between any of the settings thus far.

.....I find it worth mentioning that I'm not actually playing the original simtower (yet), but the GBA version, which appears to be a condensed version. (For example, the subway runs at about 6 below ground, and the chapel goes on the 60th floor if I recall correctly.) Shouldn't be too much of a difference of game mechanics, I'd think.

Great, downloaded the game, got a problem. Won't install.

Downloaded it again from another site. Same problem.

And yes, I read back through the earlier posts. While my problem was briefly mentioned, the question went unresolved.

My problem is (regardless of compatibility setting I've set it to) when I run the installer I get an error message entitled "Application: DSHELL" that says "The Win 16 Subsystem has insufficent resources to continue running."

What the hell?

Also, after getting this error (which seems to randomly pop up during the installation process, assuming it doesn't hit right off the bat) it won't let me try running setup again, as I get an error stating that another setup is running. I have to ctrl-alt-del and get rid of a process entitled "ntvdm.exe" just to try again.

In before someone suggests dosbox for a windows program again. (which won't help, as I've tried, and it says it's a windows program.)

Regardless, just rebooting the computer fixed it. Installed fine. 'Course while playing it, every so often I get an error saying "disk full" when trying to save, which is utter crap, but restarting it constantly was tolerable enough to fix it.

Express to top means that at the time, as soon as somebody gets in the elevator, it immediately goes to the top of the shaft. I found this useful with a business tower, putting fast food restaurants in floor B1. With express to bottom at lunchtime, everybody instantly went to the restaurants, and the cars dropped them off there then went up for more people.

Those little fast food joints can rack up 450-500 visitors for a tower with many business offices, and they help the offices' satisfaction rating, so might as well put a few.

People from hotel rooms go to normal (more expensive) restaurants like mad as well.

When lines increase in length quickly, it's good to put a 30 second wait (haven't experimented with 60 sec) on the elevator cars. That doesn't necessarily mean long lines but rather lines that FORM quickly. Like, if there are 5 people waiting, the car picks them up, then just as it leaves, 20 people form a line, you want a wait time.

Fastest way to win sim tower

beginning:
make short lobby plus 2 floors above and below, only long enough to build 3 fast food joints length on each floor for a total of 12 ff restraunts. then wait for about 10 mins to get your second star. Destroy the fast food joints above the lobby but keep the ones below.

2 stars:
Build a hotel from floor 1 through floor 13 all the way across. Build the hotel service units below ground on one or two floors below B4 with a service elevator up. ONLY one or two suites just to get the vip recomendation. Stick with single units only. Get it running without problems then let er sit about 2 hours and the money will pile up. From then on always pay the bombers and fire fighters. never build more than 2 security, no condos, no offices. Hotels use elevators at night- fast food during the day (no conflicts). This should get you to about 4 stars.

4 stars
Build up. put fast food and restraunts 4 floors above and below sky lobbies and use escalators there. This increases population dramatically.

learn to manage elevators for this scenario.

You should have no problem with the rest

You should build your elevators asymmetrically. Start a new elevator in every skylobby.

The SimTower-help provides information about the behavior of the SIMs within the tower and towards the elevators. It's always been a big help to me.

They never switch elevators more than two times or so. And you have to plan your transport in that way.
I always felt that it was a bit annoying that you couldn't arrange it in a logical way that has a system, but that you had to keep with the SIM behavior.
But I think that's realistic - in a way...

Hope that helps. k:

im a bit confused you say that the sims don't change elevators more than twice but elevators onl go 30 floors so to just get to sixty they have to switch twice and to go further than 60 they have to switch elevators 3x at least. im so confused....

Yes, that's what I'm trying to say and what is the confusing thing:
The SIMs are morons. You have to make sure that every skylobby a standard elevator starts.
The SIMs use the express elevator as little as they can and then switch to the normal ones.
Logically they could go to floor 48 by using express to 45 and then go three floors by normal. But they go to 30 by express and then use the normal elevator to 48.
Did you get my point?
