![]() Ok, some advice:
To install the game if the installer fails in WinXP try using DosBox. Mount your root directory as drive F for example and start the installer. Change the destination path so that it would start with F:\ (to something like F:\Ultima8) and do not forget to set up the sound. Running the game is a different matter. If you use DosBox, you will get full sound but the game speed will depend on the speed of your CPU. You may use the boot disk (load the computer in DOS mode and start the game as you would 6 years ago). This will require setting up the correct DOS drivers for your sound card and working a bit more with the game installer. Or you could use the program called U8Win9x, which patches the game and lets you play directly under Win9x, WinME and WinXP. Note that in this case you will need to set up the VDMSound utility as well. I myself couldn’t get it to work correctly(maybe simply because the installer got corrupt finally Hope that helps! |

![]() Tried DosBox first, but things were too choppy for me to handle. [And WHY does such an old game need SO much memory?! Bah!]
So now I'd like to try Pentagram. I've downloaded all the stuff I need, but I do not understand the directions for setting it up. I need some Pentagram 101. Explicit directions. No, not that kind of explicit. Can anyone help? Is there a site out there that already does what I'm looking for? Rebecca redhotkitchen at earthlink.net |

![]() How about reading the FAQ on the Pentagram homepage for starters? Pentagram isn't complete anyway, so you're still stuck with using DosBox. Try increasing the CPU cycles to speed the game up, and read the Guide on this forum.

![]() To the guy needing help running this game in DOSBOX.
Ok, This might help you out a bit. I'm another person having trouble with this game. After hours of messing around with the settings, these seem to work the best for me on my 1.2 ghz machine. CPU=Simple Dos memory=16 MB Render Method=Surface Resolution=320x200 Scale=none Frameskip=3 cycles=8000 <----- YES, 8000. This is all the game really needs. This will save your computer precious CPU power to use helping to emulate other things. Like sound. Sample rate=11025 Turn off all sound emulation except soundblaster. Turn off joystick support. XMS=on EMS=off Granted, unless you have 2gh plus this won't get the game running anything close to smooth, but the game IS playable like this. |
