Whats the best way of acquiring troops? Just walking through the place and gathering mercenaries? ( I seem to loose more troops walking than i can get in towns). Dows throwing loads of money in the army treasure increase troops??

I took a contingent of 1000 troops and sent them to Egypt and the Phoenician cities, then returned in a year with forty-thousand soldiers, lots of horses and elephants. Just what I needed to sack Rome.

Hello HANNIBAL players.

I note the "Manual" fails to give any Victory Conditions.

I presume that "The Player" has to capture Rome, before losing Carthage, and that a time limit may be involved ( ie before the end of 201/200 BC ).

Can anyone advise me of the Actual Victory Conditions.

Many thanks.

Dieses Spiel hat mich damals total fasziniert, ich hab es nächteweise gezockt. Good old times!

60% deutsch? Ich nicht sprechen deutsch ( vor 35 jahr )!

I think the above says that you must play the game to find the victory conditions - and fill the map with green ( Carthaginian controlled/friendly cities ). Can anyone confirm?
A history book on the Punic Wars that I am reading, says that Hannibal's plan was to isolate Rome from her allies ( rather than capture Rome ), by getting them to become Carthaginian Allies; so this would make sense. If so :

1. Is it a percentage of the total cities on the map that triggers victory? If so, what is this percentage? OR
2. Is it done by comparing the amount of Carthage Green to Roman Red. ( This seems more likely. ) If so,
how much bigger does Carthage have to be?

Thanks.

( Vielen Dank. )

Ooops sorry, somehow I didn't realise this is an English forum.

I was saying that I was really enjoying this game, back then. I remember that I tried to 'paint' all the map green, that is to say to conquer all citites. If I remember right, I almost achieved it, except of the minor asian towns.

But you don't have to go that far for victory: capture Rome and you are done :brain:

This is most easily done, if you just starve them. Let an army siege it, till they run out of food.

I just found that apparently the battle options don't influence the outcome: it seems to be pure random!! So it doesn't matter what formation you choose, just watch the status of the battle, if it looks bad cancel and flee.

Rome draws the 0,4% new troops in october, where you get new troops in april, from some cities. I haven't found out how you can influence the amount, maybe being nice (low taxes) helps?

It was made by a small company and wasn't a very popular game, it's likely that the makers didn't live to fulfill the sequel. :_(

I liked this game but long into the war my rich Spanish cities started to revolt for no apparent reason... :S I wonder if it's supposed to be some kind of event hard coded into the game... I quit playing. I'll beat it some day...

The game is good in general terms but it can become quite annoying. Example: armies fighting with a 3 to 1 advantage that loses; or unprovoked revolts; or 20% desertion rate per march in your biggest army who is heading to Rome.
