It's a very tough question and i will choose 3 games that are classics and would, if updated today (easier interface and better graphics...not much more) still be massive hits:

Master of Orion

Caesar II (why not Caesar III? because the battles and the province map of Caesar II makes it still the best CB ever released)

Age of Empires (i would just add formations and some little things)

What's the best game ever?
It's really difficult to make a choice...maybe the question should comprise all the games genre...

Adventure: Dune absolutely, super mario3, Alfred Chicken (lovely).

Point & Click: Monkey Island 1-2-3-4 and I'm waiting n°5, Indiana Jones, Grim Fandango!

Puzzle: Arkanoid, Pinball Fantasies, Gekiuki (Uatta!)

Rpg: Neverwinternights1&2, Diablo2 (yeah I know that somebody don't consider Diablo an rpg..but otherwise I dunno where insert it ).

Rts: Dune 2, Starcraft, Command & Conquer; Dungeoun Keeper 1 - 2, UFO Enemy Unknown!!

Tps(Third person shooter): Cannon Fodder! Max Payne1&2..I'm waiting the third...please does anybody know something about it?

Fps: Quake, Wolfenstein (the old and the new one),

MultiPlayer: Battlefield 2-2142, Unreal Tournament,

Cars: Need For Speed 1-Underground -Most Wanted , MicroMachines! (Flat out for lan party! Try it)

Sim: Theme Park!, RoallerCoaster Tycoon

Fight: BodyBlows, Street Fighters, Mortal Kombat

Amiga games: all of them!!!

And I'm sure I've forgotten some jewels..

I'm stuck - what's LBA2?

"1. LBA2: Absolutely the best game I have ever played. The game is very long. It has fantastic plot, enough challenge and enough puzzles, enough variation, VERY many places to discover, nice graphics (with lovely ingame videos) etc. Everything is fine in this game."

My games all time based on time wastage & fun:

Unreal gold (good solo) & Tournment (online monsterhunt & DM mods)
Halflife 1 & 2 (One had more "meat") plus mods ("hearts of evil & they hunger "was cool!)
Doom (all of them)
TOAOW 1,2, C of Warfare - lots of fun via e mail & solo
Steel Panthers - all varitions solo or against human
Combat Mission - All - online play is great!!!!

With all great games out there, which I enjoyed big time....rated by total playing time I have to state a rather strange selection:

Rasenmäher - C64:
2 years of mowing virtual lawn

ROME (Total War Series)
3 years - conquering ALL territories with each group using the "skip end of game screen at 70% by saving and loading again"-bug

Snake - Nokia 6110 (first appearance)
since I use mobile phones.... maybe 10 years

1. Fallout 2 by far the greatest
2. Monkey Island 3 (and I don't even own one...)
3. Hmmm, Baldurs Gate saga, I guess, but there is lotsa competition here...

Best TBS: Tie between Star Trek: Birth of the Federation and Civilization 4

Best fighting: Super Smash Bros Melee

Best Racing: Mario Kart Double Dash
