People,
If you lose your pieces of eight, you can use the Google cache to check how many you had approximately if you don't remember, or even to positively prove a close minimum amount that you had. For example: http://74.125.39.104/search?q=cache:.../sr/user/38201 Notice that these pages are cached at regular intervals but not every second, so it's very likely that you won't find your latest score. Check every cached version of the same page because some will be older than others. The link above shows that ltsajber had (the 18 Jun 2008 at 07:05:16 GMT) 322 poe which placed him in rank 127. There were around a dozen older versions. When restoring lost poes, I guess admins should add the few poe earned since the counter was reset.

Egad.. my capitalism senses are tingling. If you were to offer pieces of eight in exchange for currency, you could make a fortune selling them! They do seem to give a ranking bonus, and people just go ga-ga for being #1. GENIOUS! I only ask for 5% of all earnings.
