Go to blacksmith in town and buy better ones once you can afford those. When you buy the best ones (which are expensive I think) most of duels will be easy. However, I remember some fights, I had best equipment but sometimes the opponent hits me and kill me with single blow, making several times greater damage than the one needed to kill me. But then I load and fight again and everything is normal. It was probably some bug.
