I may consider Ubuntu as another operating system in our new computer, just for trying out. But I have a few questions:
1. If I did install Ubuntu, will I be able to choose from Ubuntu or XP in the startup of the computer? 2. Do you know any Windows emulators for this? Especially games? Advantage or disadvantage? 3. What should I expect from this? Thanks if ever you're going to answer.

1 -> Yes, Ubuntu installs a bootloader.
2 -> There are winsimulators, but don't expect too much from them, modern games will not (or barely) run on those. Dosbox works in it, and there are several emus for other (older) systems. 3 -> see 2, if your PC is meant mainly as gaming rig you don't need Linux. Otherwise you can do all that you can do in Windows. Advantage: all is free. (OpenOffice-Gimp-Whatevers Whatnots.) More info if needed: http://www.ubuntu.com/

It means that you must use what suites you the best.
It also doesn't mean that there are no games that run in Linux, just that you won't get the newest ones on it. There are plenty freeware and good games for Linux. Some are real gems. Also it seems I forgot to mention you can get a 'live' CD for Ubuntu, so you can try it out before you install it. Of course booting from a live CD is ..... pretty slow in fact, keep that in mind. Why don't you take a look on the Ubuntu site? All you ask here is explained fully there. What you also (eventually) can do is hook up an ol'HD to try things out before you decide -or not- the dual boot with XP, any 5-10 Gigs HD will do. Those are cheap owerdays, you wouldn't believe it.

 (And your ethical circuit broke)I've treied DOSBox on Debian and FreeBSD and I was surprised how well it worked. Another great emu on Linux is ScummVM. |
