we are weary of adding more categories to the website as we already feel the number of categories is crowding the frontpage. The current goal is to make the frontpage a little less cluttered and therefore the likelyhood of new categories is small.

One more couldn't hurt. However if we said that everytime the suggestion to make a new category comes up... We'd be well on the way to clutter. So I see your point.

Well, I think there we should go with the Marko_River's idea of subcategories - but the improved version of the suggestion... Have maybe 5 main categories (with numerous subcategories)

I think Educational would be one of the major categories...

Text based games are all adventures anyway (so they'd simply become sub-categories), so could RPG games (either a part of action or adventure main category). Board games would become a subcategory of strategy games... Arcade a subcategory of ACTION games (together with a FPS category). Racing is just a part of sports and so on...

Although it'd make games harder to find, there is a search feature that works remarkably well. So I really don't think this idea is a problem. I say go for it.

I was thinking, as there are quite a few educational and children's games, they could all be put in a different category...

Games like:
Carmen Sandiego
Mixed-up
Little People
...

They could all fall in this category.

What do you all think?
I probably have lots o my 1000 DOS games CD.

Exactly. Don't know for sure is it better, but looks more professional, like we have exact category and sub-category for every game. Seb already said where to put some categories as sub-categories.

There can't be many categories: Action, Adventure, Educational, Logical, Platform, Simulations, Sports and Strategies (and maybe Misc but it could fall under Logical)
That's the way i see it.
Perhaps Board, Crypt and Unsorted can remain. That way we won't reduce number of main categories but it new selction will be final.

I also think that it would be easier to find game (that's how i got the idea in the first place). Using subcategories you can get more specific sub-category or simply click on main category if you want to see them all.

Some games can fall more than just one category and we'll probablt have problems determining where to put them, but one game can simpley appear in two categories. But, this is exception.

Also, it will became easier to find only fighting games, or side-scrolling, FPS and so.

It is lot of work but once it is done you (as the site grows) it would be easier in the future to handle categories. If someone invents a completly new category of games it will simply fall as new subcategory in existing ones, so no big changes will be made.
We obviously have problems with existing categories as our site grows and problems will become bigger. We surely need new way of sorting and this is just a suggestion.

If you admins finally agree with it, i'll be glad to go determinate exact sub-category for every game on the site, as i think it would be fair for me to do.

no need to duplicate, one game is better in one sub-category , and i agree with Seb, i think we need some sub-cat. k:

Yah, I think that the sub-categories will work fine. It won't flood the main page with hundreds categories and will make it easier to find games that you may be looking for.
It could be even one of those animated menus, where you scroll the mouse over and the sub-menu rolls down... I think it's nice...

I agree with sebatianos.
Edutainment would make a good category.

But i must disagree with him on the point that i don't think there is enough edutainment games to make a major category.
But then again, the only major category it could fall under would be other or puzzles or lumped with puzzles.

We need a good system without overdoing it.
