![]() I have boght several new games recently and always find the boxes seem to lack the cool look of some of my older games , max payne 2, raven shield, hidden and dangerous 2, painkiller
the old boxes are nice custom made carboard designs that fold out and have nice long manuals for me to read while the game is installing but all the new ones are in a naff standard DVD case with a rubish looking sleve insert and either a really short basic manual or a manual on disc. some of them were not that cheap so it is disapointing that they don't have that little bit more effort put into the box maybe this is a stupid thought but somenthing about the older style game boxes just seemed to add to the experience of getting and installing a new game. lol of course it could also be because now the companies are a bunch of greedy %$£"ers who only want to sell you a nice box if you pay for the overpriced 'special edition; |

![]() It's nice how you're only mentioning post-2003 games. >.> I sure as hell consider them to be modern.
Here's real oldschool beauty: ![]() ![]() And who said newer boxarts aren't nice? ![]() ![]() And an, in your definition, non-modern one: ![]() You just need to know where to look, anyways. There's plenty of modern boxes with nice art. EDIT: One MOAR! ![]() Come on. You know you love it.

![]() A lot of the fun of collecting old games is in acquiring and admiring the old packaging.

![]() lol , I am only mentioing games from 2003 as unfortunately I don't have the older games any longer as most of them were either left at my parents house ( and thrown out by my dad !!! ) or were sold becuase I had nowhere to keep them with the huge cardboard boxes that they used to come in
also although the games may be a little modern they still have really nice packaging whih the ones from 2007/8/9 don't |

![]() That you don't have older games means you don't know of their existence anymore?
Anyway, I disagree. I've seen plenty of nice boxarts from recent days. But anywaaay.

![]() The problem with game packaging these days is not what is printed on the outside, but more the lack of what is on the inside.
That isn't entirely meant to be an indictment of modern gaming, though, I generally mean things like the goodies that used to come with games, like those in the old Ultima games, coins, runes, maps, various manuals and such. Truly more than just a game. Ah... the memories... why did I get rid of them? I could have had quite the collection... ah well. Nevermind. |

![]() I wouldn't say box art is worse than back in the 80s or 90s, but they definitely skimp of the extras. Manuals are like a few pages long if you get a manual at all. Old games used to always have some sort of goodies. Space Quest had Space Piston magazine and fake coupons and stuff. Ultima had excellent maps and detailed manuals and little trinkets. Even "collector's editions" nowadays aren't anywhere near that quality.

![]() I find that few games still use hand painted covers. Take the cover of Secret of Monkey Island: it's gorgeous! A lot of adventure games had great covers back then - they often the artist who drew the backdrops make a cover as well and it paid off.
Not that new games have crap covers but they look cheaper, tackier. Most have "Photoshop" stamped all over it. |
