![]() Well, I am fairly new to the world of 4x games. Somehow that is one genre that has managed to escape my sight until now.
I have been playing quite a bit of Master of Orion and I can say I love that game. Is MoO the best 4x space game out there or is there better? So for my question - which 4x games do you consider to be the absolute best-of-the -best? |

![]() I would probably say that the best 4x space strategy game to date has been MOO2. It has mediocre AI and the computer-driven diplomatic responses frequently aren't clear about their reasons; also, the endgame has too much micromanagement. But it's easily the best of the lot. Galactic Civilzations is good, too, with excellent AI, but it lacks the atmosphere and believability of MOO2.

![]() I found Space Empires IV to be the best. It's got everything that the MOO games have but a lot more depth (it's more advanced). And it's moddable which have given rise to a lot of nice extras like Starwars, Babylon V, Star trek etc

![]() I consider MOO the best out there. Probably both because it's the first I found good and because it's about the first to have done a great impression on the 4X scene. All other 4X after that were seen as a "MOO clone" or a followup...
There is quite a lot of good 4X around. If you want a quick and funny 4X, hunt down Spaceward Ho!. Stars! is also very good but lack visuals and you're in for a very long game, even against some computers. Ascendancy is the game you should try if you are new to 4X. Very easy game, way easier than MOO. I'd recommend that one for newbies out there. If you are serious tough, don't bother playing that one (even tough it does have a lot of potential and originality). I played the demo of SE IV. Looked like a decent game tough I don't see why all the praise about that one in particular. Edit: Quote:

![]() Master of Orion 2 wouldn't happen to be abandonware like MoO 1 would it? I am in love with MoO 1 and I am sure I would love MoO 2.
I came across this site, http://www.neurohack.com/anacreon/ Has anyone played Anacreon and is it any good? With regards to 4x games, there doesn't seem to be that many that are abandonware/freeware. Does anyone know the ones that are worth a look, besides MoO and Ascendancy? I forgot to make this clear in the initial post - 4x games not only set it space, like Civilization etc. Which are the noteworthy ones in these fields. Thanks ;p |
