It's hard to give advice if you don't tell your configuration.

The easiest way is just playing without sound and listen to the radio or a good CD.

Are you running it in Dos or Windows? What version?
If in Windows, are you using VDMSound or DOSBox? What version?

Moon of Chromos is the best one out of the battle isle series.
Most challenging and nicest units.
I downloaded it last friday and I´m addicted since 1993 - help!- need some sleep!

Here are some general advices:

- Always try to attack in a way without the chance for a counterattack.
I.e. use aretillery, fight ground troops with helicopters, planes]
The AI has ALWAYS more troops on the map and is ALSWAYS in a better start position.
- To gain time to bring reinforcements in let the AI attack you in close combat (tanks vs tanks), but don´t attack yourself. Your unit will block the AI longer this way
- Gather crystals and bring them to your Facilitiys or depots (in depots to repair your units, in facilitys to produce new units)
- Producing units: Always try to produce units with long distance attacks (attention there: Heavy artillery has to pause one turn with attack after movement)
- If possible try to get sovereignty over the airspace. On some maps you´re not allowed to build airborne units. On maps were this is possible just do it. It´s fun destroying all ground units without any resistance. Kill anti air units first.
- Let infantry only attack from adequate ground types. They will not be hit easy if attacking oder being attacked in woods, craters, rubble
- Alyways attack with enough units to destroy your enemy. One destroyed enemy has more worth then ten damaged ones
- Alway attack with more than one unit. Each attacker gets a support bonus if nearby units attack the same target also. This bonus is not to underestimate.
- Repair experienced units and send them back to battle. A full experienced tank oder artillery unit can destroy a new enemy unit without support

I hope this helps a little

regards

Does anyone know what the pioneer truck does (Gnom, not Wizard i.e the depot building unit) I haven´t found any real purpose for it but it looks like a truck with a crane, some repair unit perhaps?

I remember that some of the units are used to build roads and railways... maybe that's one of them?
