If you experience the sort of sound issues you described, that means something is wrong with the sound setup.
Running
Install is recommended in that case - please make sure you configure the game to use Sound Blaster 16, IRQ 7, DMA 1, Adress 220 h.
If no option for Sound Blaster 16 is present, use Sound Blaster Pro 2 (or "plain" Pro) instead.

All I can think of is that maybe the game uses it's own formula for naming savegames, in which case you might have to rename the savegame files to match it. Can't help you more with that.
