Agree with much that has been said, the game remains one of my all-time favorites.
I played it on the Amiga, and it was AMAZING.
For those having problems surviving, as has been said above, head east out of the city then follow south to the fenced in graveyard. Then when you get attacked do laps around the fence to position the enemy for hacking them through the gate.
Game is incredible, and mine was bugged (had to hack the golden bird to get it to move) and I think a chunk of the content wasn't there for me... but I still loved it!
Map is awesome aid in a IMMENSE world... especially once that has mazes or impassable mountains to work through.
The final area is a BLAST to run around in!
