Witchaven
You are Grondoval, a knight from the land of Stazhia, whom has been chosen to travel to the forbidding Island of Char. An evil witch named Illwhyrin has cast a curse of never-ending darkness on Stazhia, and built her lair, the Witchaven, on the island, sacrificing the few foolish humans who dare venture there. The witch's present goal is to remove a magical barrier known as the Veil, which serves as a portal to the world of demons. Should she succeed, unspeakable evil shall arrive and consume the world. Only you can put an end to this witch's rain of terror, and only you can stop the world from plunging into everlasting darkness and daemonic slavery!

Only works under DosBox. Other versions from the net work under pure DOS. No version works for Win98.

Not that it'd really matter, I mostly mentioned because nowhere on the net is a Win98-compatible version. |
Actually, it does work on Windows 98. Or at least I played it on Win98 computer back when I bought it.

Well, Witchaven 2 is a hard game to test... While it works on Dosbox, it has sooooooo many timing issues that the game is almost impossible to beat, even on easy (because of the timing issues, when most enemies attack, the game registers multiple hits on you, making you lose soo much HP that its very hard to survive even the first enemies). And to make things worse: most timing issues are present even on real Dos, unless you have a Pentium 100 around... W1 also has some timing issues (jumping, for example, works quite bad in faster computers), but you can fix most of them by lowering the cycles on Dosbox. This doesn't work well on Withaven 2 though... I've seen people bash Witchaven 2 for being too hard, when the game is actually not too much harder than the first one. And thats too bad, since W2 is better than the first in many aspects. Its still badly optimized and with horrible colision detection, but at least the levels are A LOT better designed. |
