Playing in real DOS

Well, i had a hadware problem with my newer computer, but i'd like to stay playing some old games from this pentium III. Pressing F8 i can get to DOS, but don't know how to set up sound and mouse. Any of you can help me? Maybe editng a bit autoexec.bat...

What you need to do is find a generic dos mouse driver and it should add the Mouse command in your Autoexect.bat file. and it will load automatically but first type in Mouse from the dos prompt to see if you have a driver installed. Hope that helps ya out. to get sound to work What kind of sound card do you have in your PIII computer.

You need DOS drivers for your soundcard to make it work properly.

Also depending on what kind of sound card you have in there. Your driver cd that came with the card might have dos drivers all ready with it.

After running a lot /?, got to play some games in real dos with mouse. The performance is far better than in DosBox, running real smooth. But i only get sound from games with an "setup.bat" or "setsound.bat" archive to set the game to the soundboard. In the moment thats not a problem, but i don't have a mixer for DOS. I can even hear an eletric "zzz", cause everything is out loud. Since my speakers don't have volume control and those old soundboards play freakly loud, this is a problem.

Same as my first ones: cheapass ones:

BTW, why don't you plug a stereo in your line out?
Any ol'ampli will do the job, and you'll have all the controls you need.

Some old soundcards have volume control knobs. You sure yours doesn't?

they were the so called passive speakers. i have one of those as well.
however most games have volume control in them. but i do remember having problems with some games that didn't have it. they were loud indeed.

i am not sure how to change this setting in dos. there were some command for my particular card but they didn't seem to quite work.

well speakers are cheap. you can get descent ones for 10 eur. or you can buy headphones even cheaper (made in china). the new ones usually all have the volume contorl on them. so if it bothers you that much it's not so expencive to upgrade.

don't forget that you could also put your speakers in to set of 4 pillows and warp with a duct tape
