Play by Email, amongst other things
 

It's not a very common request these days, but does anyone know of any really good strategy games with play-by-email functionality?

I've been looking for a little while after I noticed that Crimson Fields (an open source Battle Isle-style game which I installed on my SUSE Linux laptop) has the option.

On a different note, I am a great fan of Racer, the free car simulation, but are there any more free/abandoned racing games with internet play?
The smaller the download the better.

The Steel Panthers series is a fairly good PBEM strategy game. The latest versions (remakes for Windows) are also free. You can get these at the camo workshop.

Don't Xcom 2000 support that option?

Stars! also can be played by email.

Space Empires III
I am not sure but i think Space empires 4 also have this option.
