Games have taken up many days of our recreational time and I would guess that a good chunk of that is repeating a portion of the game because you were killed.

Is that not just slowing the game if you have to go back to a save point?

Is there any real meaning to it?

Is it really needed in a game?

After all there is a save game option which is used to recover the 'body' in pristine condition. Would it be more realistic to have a death (in single player games) mean the character is dead just like in Diablo 2 for the hard-core characters?

But then the game wouldn't be so much fun to play, don't You think?

Yes it is. Ever played with invulnerability cheat turned on?

It depends on the game. If it's possible to rule death out (adventures...), it could actually be a good idea. But for example Operation Flashpoint needs death to be possible, and I guess there are many other not so obvious examples.

Game developers have to constantily worry about the level of dificulty in the games they make. Too easy, and it gets boring. Too hard, and the players get frustrated and wont play it anymore, or will resort to cheating.

Now, the saving feature is a very simple way to control that. If you have unlimited saves, the game becomes much easier. Without it, the game may become too hard. If you have no ressurection for characters, the average player that plays just for entertainment may get pissed off because of all the hours he lost.

Also, only "harcore" gamers really played hardcore characters. Or very hard games. I remember this game called Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, that is a very dificult game and you´re suposed to stop an army with just a bunch of soldiers. Now, the game was VERY hard, and I really liked it for being so (due to the fact that it was a chalenge) but I´m pretty sure most gamers are looking for something easier.

So, I guess that most games are easy due to the market. They try to keep some level of chalenge, but a veteran player usually dont have problems with it.

you can just play on easy. most games you could go through without save. although this changed a bit latelly. but if you look at a bit older games such as doom they are preeety easy on the easy level.

and also save feature is there so you can save and leave the game and continue it some other time when you have the time to do so. no one forces you to save or use load... :D

Yeah but you know that when the option is there, it makes it much easier.

When the option is not avaiable, the tension is much higher, because if you screw it up, you have to do it all over again. With save and load, if you´re going to do something stupid and you know it, you just save and load if it doesnt work.

Yet I do agree: Most games on easy are WAY too easy (so much that they are not even worth playing).

That's not the article I thought of, but whatever

I think it is, I hate playing games on easy. It makes games so much more real and exciting knowing that death (all be it just a slight inconvenience) is right around the corner.

Think of Resident Evil or and FPS on hard difficulty. It just adds so much more to a game.

With an action game there's really got to be something there to give that challenge, don't you think?
Potential death seems like a logical choice.
