win98 22-04-2006 01:53 AM

Today we finally got round to adding 512mb ram to our 256mb ram amd semperon 2400 family computer.
It has 768MB total but instead of 32mb for 256mb 64mb ram allcoated for onboard graphics. Now window xp loads faster in fact every thing exept for the bios post memory test is faster. If you are hesitant about upgrading your memory and are stuck at 256mb or even 128mb with xp do it upgrade to atleast 512mb it makes a huge diffrence.

Titan 22-04-2006 03:01 AM

Hate to say it: but we told you so.. ;)

It should be universaly known that windows (all versions) EATS memory, and the more it gets the better it gets.

This is directed to anyone who though only CPU-speed matters

win98 22-04-2006 03:15 AM

I already knew windows ate memory so I was pointing it out myself.

Bobbin Threadbare 22-04-2006 09:29 AM

I have 512mb, yay.

That's not much, atleast for my needs.
I have 512 and every friggin' drop is eaten up. Doing nothing uses up 50-80% of it. How????? I don't know. Soon (I finally received a bunch of money) I will get me that 1024 and it will be: 1024 + 256 + 256= 1536RAM. A whoppin' size, ain't it? :sneaky:

_r.u.s.s. 22-04-2006 10:52 AM

too many useless processes
look on mine taskmgr, i have 128+512 ram =P
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/8670/taskmgr15jv.jpg http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/5162/taskmgr2nt.jpg

you can see that i dont use spoolsv.exe niether ctfmon.exe which aare usual, but i dont need them since spoolsv is printing service and i dont have printer
and ctfmon is that little thingy down near your time which switches languages when you click on it, but i just easily use alt+shift combination
i also have turned off few more services

so 512 ram on xp is enough if you keep place clean

troop18546 22-04-2006 11:36 AM

Mine runs 38 processes now. Could you help me shut down atleast 20 of them? Your running only 15, I see.

I have 30. I know what MOST of them are. If not they're either on russ's thing or their viruses that aren't bothering me.

.:EDIT:.
Also, how can you use task manager as Run as... and use an admin account. The taskmgr.exe in the windows dir has no efect.

I got more RAM than you I hate top brag but :bleh: .

Pic Of Processes (Large) Some stuff metioned in the post may have changed. (Thats xp for you.)

r.u.s.s., which ones to end??? blink.gif
alg.exe -if you use firewall, you'd better let this be, if not-you can
(run %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc and disable Application Layer Gateway Service, if you use another than english windows, you have to right click every process name and see if its alg.exe, then you can set DENIED instead of AUTOMATICALLY or MANUALLY-maybe it will be called differently, i dont have english windows=P)
by the way microsoft doesnt recommend to turn off this service becouse of firewall settings and "security" and crap, but i live without it and everything works fine=). its up to you-not critical

btw you have to know that i dont use any kind of antivirus or firewall and clean up my registry/watch processes status manually so if you feel endangered by disabling previous or next process, dont do it=). but you can at least try, if you wish..

npfmntor.exe-once i had norton antivirus and its used by it, if you want to use norton antivirus, dont disable it
(you can disable it like previous one but name will be norton something or stuff like that)

symlcsvc.exe- this is from norton antivirus too but more uselles than previous one-some additional settings if i were you i would disable it=P. its not critical process.

navapsvc.exe guess what, norton antivirus! BUT much more important than the previous one
btw i had norton antivirus without ^previous process (symlcsvc) running

ccevtmgr.exenorton antivirus... i think important one, dont remember=P. dont do anything wth it (if you want to use norton antivirus of course=))

ccapp.exe SURPRISE! norton antivirus. i had norton antivirus working without this process, this supports your mail check, BUT alllows some adware to visit your computer
maybe it s in services list, if its not run regedit, search for ccapp.exe and there should be ccapp.exe in "run", "runonce", "runonceex' or "runservices" key (key- directory icon thingie to the left)

[u]spbbcsvc.exe[u]somethign from norton again, dont disable

sndsrvc.exe norton antivirus, one of the core processes of the antivirus

ccsetmgr.exe n o r ton a n Ti v I rus, i dont disable for proper norton avirus funcion

starwindservice.exe-disable it. it was something for network setting of alcohol 120 (btw great virtual drive), but the process is crap, and alcohol works perfectly wihtout it (like for me =D)

nvxvc32.exe-p this looks like some kind of spyware but to be sure..
go to windows or windows\system32 directory, find the process, click the properties, see the description if there s none, immediatly
1. terminate process
2. delete the file (sometimes they run like 2 seconds after you finish it, so you have to make it quick)
3.disable it, if you wont find it in services, run regedit and do same thing like with ccapp.exe ..

mdm.exe-finish him! this miscrosoft integrated process, something with internet explorer debugger, crappy
it also makes your computter "accesable" and allows some troyan to get in to your computer

(should be in services list (services.msc, by the way its somewhere in controll pannel), i dont know the name though, so right click everyone and check if it s mdm.exe, realy ANNOYNG)

ctfmon.exe mentioned in previous post
Quote:

ctfmon is that little thingy down near your time which switches languages when you click on it, but i just easily use alt+shift combination
disabling wont case any harm, panel with languags just disappears but you can still use shortcut..
i dont use the process

//note, if you want this process to run, so you can see and install new language support maybe, easily click windows->run and type ctfmon.exe ..what you see? panel is back (you can do this with any other process)

spoolsv.exe this is for printing, you can disable it in services list if you dont have printer (you can always change it back, disabling just disables, not deletes or something=P)

lexpps.exe i dont know xD
check exe description in windows\system32 directory

lexbces.exe sounds simmilar to previous one, doesnt it=)
check in sys32..
it will probably be something you use and want to use, processes with simmilar names uses to be like that :D (you know, company or product name)

explorer.exe hehe=) (its all the pannels and sesktop and stuff)
you probably will want to have this one running=]
btw restarting explorer sometimes helps if your computer behaves strange
and you can actually turn it off during playng some game or running some kind of other application and computer will have some more free memory to run appplications smoother, you can run it again if you press ctrl+alt+delete click file->new application, type explorer and everything is back in normal way

dslagent.exe -agent ..for dsl.. =)
this should be process whithout which internet should not work but
i have DSL too and i have tried disabling it- internet worked even after it, no problems/changes, iam not sure though, i would try disabling it if i were you, you can always return it (find the process in regedit, i have already wrote what to do..)

svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
this is one of IMPORTANT system processes and proper funcion
every svchost is runned with different parameter and damed differently in services list though (of course it has dofferent funcion too)
i have runing 4 though and i realy dont remember what was the name of that pointless one for me, but dont do anything with svchosts in services list, there are over 20 svchosts in it and system runs which he needs at different situations

lsass.exe system critical, you cant even end the process

services.exesame

pdvdserv.exe i know this one, this power dvd player
this is kinda pointless=P disable it in regedit, power dvd player should work without the process

winlogon.exe one of holy ones=)

csrss.exe ^his little brother :D

dslstat.exe this is for DSL connection, not important.. i would disable (make backup and crap in case that your internet wouldnt work, but i realy DONT think it would affect it) should be in regedit

lxsupmon.exe i dont know, check description in system 32

smss.exe the last one critical

iexplore.exe man, why didnt you turn the internet explorer off when you was wring down the list
by the way... USE MOZILA FIREFOX :sneaky:

mspmssv.exe crap for windows media player, not critical even for windows media player.. disable it (regedit or services list)
it aslo can be adware/spyware, check the exe description in system32 directory and post it here=)

oh and Win98, sorry, i can write list for you later, but i am realy tired now

win98 22-04-2006 11:22 PM

Nah you do not need to my sys is fine with speed you can If you want to though.

troop18546 23-04-2006 10:33 AM

Well... it seems that every process is vital for my PC. Strange.

r.u.s.s., do you know the answer for another prob I have?
Every time my PC starts up and every time I use MS Office like Word, Exel or ect. these messages keep showing up (from 1 to 3 times in a row):

"Norton antivirus is preparing to install"

and then quickly after that

"The MSI must be launched through setup"

If I click "OK" they reappear a few times and then disappear, this has no effect on the progs or anything but it's f*cking annoying... :tai:

did you read it?=]
only first processes were from norton antivirus and few more were system critical, other ones are worth read=P

not vital:
starwindservice.exe
nvxvc32.exe -check the description in properties in system32 directory , post here
mdm.exe
pdvdserv.exe
mspmssv.exe

see the desctiptions in previous posts how to disable the processes

REALY worth trying disabling(see the description in previous post):
dslagent.exe
dslstat.exe

1.uinstall norton antivirus (you will reinstall later)
2.start->regdit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Windows\RunOnce

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Run
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\RunOnce
(or easily search for "RunOnce" expression by pressing CTRL+F)

^here delete ANY process of norton antivirus (from previous post)
Quote:

npfmntor.exe
symlcsvc.exe
navapsvc.exe
ccevtmgr.exe
ccapp.exe
spbbcsvc.exe
sndsrvc.exe
ccsetmgr.exe

3. search for norton (or nortonantivirus or norton antivirus or symaltec, you nkow what i mean) expression (ctrl+f) delete any registry key containing it (it has to do something with norton antivirus of course, there uses to be description)

4.reinstall norton antivirus (if you wish) but pshht: its realy crap and other antivirus prgrams take less memory and processes.. jeez its 7!

troop18546 23-04-2006 12:43 PM

I read it ofcourse (it wouldn't make much of a difference if I done ended a few, but I'll keep in mind that explorer.exe issue while playing games :) ), but uninstalling NA2005 is a bit risky for me now, I thought the problem would be easier fixed or smth. Thanks anywayz, wise and allknowing r.u.s.s. :kosta:

_r.u.s.s. 23-04-2006 05:29 PM

yay :w00t:

if you dont want to uinstal there is a little *sigh* newbee but working solution
start->msconfig
click last tab menu (after run or something like that)
try guessing which process of antivirus's processes is it (there is also location of file so it might help a little)
uncheck the checkbox with that process
save settings, restart computer and see if it helps O=)

by the way i hope you have disabled nvxvc32.exe, becouse it is spyware at 99%=P

troop18546 23-04-2006 05:34 PM

ummm... nvxvc32.exe is a nvidia driver helper or smth - wrong guess, man. :D
Atleast "nvsvc32.exe" is, maybe you're right.

_r.u.s.s. 23-04-2006 05:43 PM

i have geeforce4, all the utilities installed and i know that nvsvc32.exe is nvidia graphic card service

but there should be no nvxvc32.exe in drivers (you wrote there is in first post), like i said, i use nvidia graphic card too

btw i have nvsvc32.exe(the real utility) disabled. its something for desktop support and realy not necessary, iam living with the process disabled and have never ever had problems or anomals with graphic card

win98 23-04-2006 06:46 PM

Ok well after checking out what services I have I figured that I will keep the services the same it is fast anyway.

troop18546 01-05-2006 08:32 PM

I have been looking for those rams all this time in the wrong directions. It seems that I can get them from one shop near my pad for 265Lt (35Lt. less than the others had wanted). I will probably get them this week - whoopee. I will need them though, cause my new Norton2k6 eats rams like crazy. A fun fact though - I have a subscription to 2012 LOL . That's 2128 days left - :roflol: ...

Japo 02-05-2006 12:01 AM

I've heard that the new Windows Vista will eat over 1 Gb on its own, apart from the programs you'll be running, even the ones everybody has residing in memory like antivirus, firewall, etc. It was estimated that 50% of the computers wouldn't be able to use it, and I bet that most of the remaining 50% would run it slowly. I... I think this tendency's just crazy. Don't you?

I took a course in computer architecture design, and in the first lecture the professor commented that the demands that the software makes on the hardware increases by fifty to a hundred percent, per year, and added "Someone must be punished.". The reason being that code bloat is nearly keeping pace with the advance of hardware performance, so wordprocessing in MS Office12 is not much faster than word processing with MS Word 4.0 (but you do have more fonts and features).

This is also part of the unholy alliance between Microsoft and the big hardware manufacturers. Nearly everyone will have to buy new computers to run Vista. The hardware manufacturers are hoping that people will upgrade, but it is equally likely that people will just keep hardware and migrate to linux (If Vista does not run your old programs, and you have to buy new computers to run it, you may as well migrate to an OS that allows you to keep your current stuff).

troop18546 02-05-2006 02:10 PM

Now I don't even know WHY anyone should go and get "Vista".
Seems like rubbish and over-powerconsuming crud...

_r.u.s.s. 02-05-2006 03:06 PM

becouse of same reasons as windowsXP ;)

companies will make new programs running under it

win98 19-05-2006 06:44 AM

Exactly. If companies stop devloping for windows why upgrade to vista I mean whats the point.
