swiss 22-10-2005 01:07 PM

:drunk:
nice poll, pal
:roflol:

But to answer your question: Monty Python - The quest for the holy grail !

Havell 22-10-2005 01:10 PM

I'll get rid of the poll for you, this sort of question doesn't suit a ;poll due to the wildly differing tastes that people have.

Blood-Pigggy 22-10-2005 01:10 PM

I couldn't decide... :D

Kon-Tiki 22-10-2005 01:11 PM

Equal between La Cité Des Enfants Perdus and Mononoke Hime. Can't decide which one's better.

Chuck the plant 22-10-2005 01:14 PM

None of those you mentioned, that's for sure... :eeeeeh:

Blood-Pigggy 22-10-2005 01:14 PM

@Tiki: You know, those movies do have english names...
Princess Mononoke was good, but I think it's Mononoke-Hime.
:D

Flop 22-10-2005 01:20 PM

The Fearless Vampire Killers, hands down. :)

Kearnsy 22-10-2005 01:23 PM

Yeah Princess Mononoke was cool, I like Porco Rosso better.

Also Kubrick films, Night of the Living dead (The original if I put the wrong title)....
..... and anything with Zombie aliens being killed by gun toteing members of a Japanese rock band!!!

Oberon 22-10-2005 01:24 PM

The Crow is my all time favourite.. also The Matrix (only the first part)
and of course LOTR, specially LOTR 1 & LOTR 3

Blood-Pigggy 22-10-2005 01:27 PM

Wasn't Night Of The Living dead directed by George A. Romero Kearnsy?

And as for Kubrick films, the best would have to be The Shining and Clockwork Orange.

TheChosen 22-10-2005 01:27 PM

Blues Brothers is my top favourite movie.

Kearnsy 22-10-2005 01:37 PM

Yeah I think this is the one that I meant:
Night of the Living Dead
i didnt mean that it was a Kubrick film if that is what you meant.

Chuck the plant 22-10-2005 01:42 PM

@ blood piggy: I know, you'll just take this as one more proof of my "immaturity", but don't you have ANYTHING else to do than just making nitpicky, smarta$$-remarks to everything and everyone you just THINK could be slightly wrong?
BTW, Kearnsy pretty clearly differentiated between "kubrick's films" and "Night of the Living Dead" in his post, so maybe better start picking your own nose...

As for Kubrick's best: They surely have to be "Dr. Strangelove" and "2001", already because they were really unique and not just some half-a$$ed novel-adaptions that can't hold a candle to their respective paragons.

:D

I prefer to call them by their original name. I don't go 'round calling The Lion King De Leeuwenkoning, either, even though that's what it's called 'round here.

Blood-Pigggy 22-10-2005 02:03 PM

Anyone else see John Carpenter's The Thing?
I saw it a few months ago, it was excellent.

Alf Hari 22-10-2005 02:07 PM

The City of the Lost Children was a bit wierd, so I didn't really like it.

As for zombie films, I presume Kearnsey is talking about Guitar Wolf: Wild Zero. That's a very funny film - it shows how wierd the Japanese are sometimes.

To be honest though, I like the Lord of the Rings Films the best.

Kon-Tiki 22-10-2005 03:11 PM

La Cité Des Enfants Perdus has a strong atmosphere, yep, which's part of the point of the movie, and's part of what makes it so great. The general weirdness... it's cool, but not the point at all. You've got to manage to look past it. Then you'll see exactly how great the movie is :)

Blood-Pigggy 22-10-2005 03:14 PM

Speaking of weird movies, anyone seen Donnie Darko?
Took a bit of thinking to figure out the exact story, but it's a very deep and bizarre film.
It's up there with one of my most favorite movies.

skittles04 22-10-2005 03:48 PM

i shall soon make a new post on worst movies ever seen ... please keep and eye out if some one would like to send me a pm with helpful hints on how to make a proper pole it would be must apreciated

skittles04 22-10-2005 03:51 PM

Can't settle on only one. So here's my top 5 :

- Alien
- Conan
- The princess bride
- Mad Max
- Escape from New York

I deliberately don't mention obscure french movies that wouldn't mean anything to most of you.

Sebatianos 22-10-2005 05:55 PM

Too many to mention (you may go through some old posts -this has been done before- to see other people's opinions), but I'll try.
Here's a few:

The Treasure of Sierra Madre
Intruder in the Dust
Seargent York
The Fountainhead
12 Angry men

Cry Terror
...and many more

BeefontheBone 22-10-2005 06:02 PM

Donnie Darko rules - I'm not sure about the Director's Cut though, it loses a lot of the intriguing mystery. I'd also mention Almost Famous, Amelie, Shaun of the Dead, Being John Malkovich, Belleville Rendez-vous, The Incredibles, Human Traffic and The Big Lebowski. But there's plenty more too...

TheGiantMidgit 22-10-2005 06:39 PM

The Waking Life, followed by classics like Clockwork Orange, Donnie Darko, American Beauty, Run Lola Run, Requiem for a Dream, etc.

Mr.Snuggles 22-10-2005 10:24 PM

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Bottom Line: The best movie i've ever seen since The Matrix. :kosta: (Even though I saw it in Japanese)

omg 22-10-2005 10:27 PM

dr strangelove. i got it on dvd the other day and it is back up there in my fave movies selection, and the dvd has 3 documentorys on it which is definatly cool. (well docus and interviews)
as for zombie movies i like day of the dead the best just for its combination of shockingly good and shockingly bad acting and the bit where the soldiers get ripped in half on the floor and there internals are peerfect. i think that movie has some of the best zombie gore fx ever (just the bit where the female zombie is munching on what is clearly a string of sausages rather than guts drags it down)

You got that right! :D

It's second only to Fearless Vampire Killers, which I believe I mentioned earlier in this thread.

I actually think it's perfectly fair to say that John Carpenter is God, and when he and Kurt Russell get together miracles happen (except for the abysmal fiasco that was Escape From LA).

...................... ......... ..... are you telling me you watch anime movies in english? ............ :max:

Chuck the plant 23-10-2005 01:49 AM

Well, there's only so much use to watch movies in their original language as long as you at least have SOME knowledge of that very language...

Mr.Snuggles 23-10-2005 05:04 AM

Well, i've watch many movies in Japanese, (without subtitles at the bottom....well..some kung-fu movies) same goes for Anime. But only the anime had the subtitles i needed. I do understand a little japanese...i mean i know what good afternoon means, and "how are you doing?" and "shut up" :bleh: . I watch some of my anime movies in english..like DBZ for example. But animes that envolves alot of blood but not too much (ugh..vampire hunter D...the old one) and cursing are in japanese.

efthimios 23-10-2005 07:46 AM

Although Carpenter is my favourite director (only one I love all his movies), and although the director (with C) that inspired me to follow the same path is Robert Rodriguez, my favourite/best movie I have seen is not one of theirs. Title is Bladerunner, and the movie is a masterpiece (IMO of course).

Borodin 23-10-2005 02:12 PM

Best? Tough call. That means it would have to be best in all areas, and one that tremendously impresses me. Hard to single out just one.

I suppose I'd go with Children of Paradise. Issued just after WWII by a French director/writer team, it's an extraordinarily accurate and detailed depiction of 1850 in Paris, looking at the lives and interactions of a group of eight main characters--six of whom have a shifting personal relationship. The acting is superb. The direction is remarkable, with outdoor boulevards created indoors on limited sets. It's all the more impressive if you know the wartime conditions under which the film was made, but even without that, it draws you in.

TheChosen 23-10-2005 02:20 PM

Blood-Pigggy 23-10-2005 05:25 PM

I failed to mention my favorite movie, even though I've been blabbing away, :sneaky: .

For me, About Schmidt, I have never seen anymore fine tuned characters, settings, plot, and morals in a single film.
It's so beautifuly done, and the message is clear, even though it's never spoken aloud.

Funkmaster5000 29-07-2012 09:09 AM

I hope nobody forgot to mention Christopher Nolans' Memento! A very clever movie about a guy without short time memory and how he is used for...something (you can't give away anything without a spoiler).

Also there are:
Following (also a Nowlan masterpiece)
Children of Men (gotta see that one!)
The Fifth Element
Shaun of the Dead
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Four Rooms
Guest House Paradiso

DarthHelmet86 29-07-2012 09:16 AM

You must be the only person in the world who thinks Guest House Paradiso could be a good movie and don't get me wrong I love watching it. It is a bad bad bad bad bad bad movie, so bad it comes around from bad and hits good from the other side and mugs it.

On that note I have another movie to torture my followers with after making them watch Brain Dead and Meet the Feebles.

BranjoHello 05-08-2012 11:33 PM

One of the best documentaries I watched:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1942884/

I believe most Abandonians will enjoy it. :OK:

Mighty Midget 06-08-2012 01:11 AM

Has been for a long time and will be for a long time: M by Fritz Lang

(also, Abandonia, home of abandoned topics)

Lulu_Jane 06-08-2012 08:49 AM

Mighty was the one who got me to sit down and finally watch M, and I have to say, he's goddamned right.

It's incredible.
