Hey

There was once a time when the Adventure games were on top and most of them were from Lucasarts.
As the years go on and I get older I see less and less of these great games going out there.

The best thing about these games were the storylines. Many hours of my childhood were spent on Indiana Jones (just to mention one form Lucas), Broken Sword, Discworld, etc

The last great one I played was the last Broken Sword game, I waited ages and ages for that to come out and when it did I loved every minute of it.

I know there are many people out there with memorys and current interests in this dwindling genre, I just don't know any of them so if you've got anything to say about them please post here.

Thanks

KidCanary 13-10-2005 03:36 PM

Just finished Maniac Mansion, and started playing through Day Of The Tentacle actually.
I've been a big fan of the Monkey Island games since I was about 8, but due to money constraints at the time I never had a chance to play a lot of the other great adventure games around.

Apocalypse Dude 13-10-2005 03:40 PM

Still playing all 3 the discworld games.... But then again I'm a huge Discworld fan. The only point and click adventure I really want to play again is Toonstruck ( the full cd version that is). but nobody seems to be selling it anymore..

Vinnyq12 13-10-2005 03:43 PM

Yeah the Monkey Island games were one of my fav's.
Haven't got round to playing the forth one though. My love for them started around the same age.
"Look behind you, A three-headed monkey"

Manic Mansions was good but I liked Day of the Tenticle better.

You should try Fate of Atlantis if you haven't already, love it.

Vinnyq12 13-10-2005 03:46 PM

I think I remember playing Toonstruck, it came in a strange big red box. Didn't fancy it though - played the start and then took it back and got "The Dig" instead. Ever try that?

Vinnyq12 13-10-2005 03:50 PM

I love discworld too, think the second one is the best.

Apocalypse Dude 13-10-2005 04:04 PM

No offense but try using the EDIT button insted of multiple posts, this keeps the forum a bit cleaner..

And indeed the 2nd discworld game is the best

Spoonman 13-10-2005 04:06 PM

Nah the first one had better humor and less Monty Python-ripoff scenes, but DW2 was fun anyway :)

In adittion of what has been said above I would recommend:
- The Legend of Kyrandia (all 3 of them are a good way to kill time, and pretty graphics as well)
- Goblins, Gobliins and Gobliiins (these are really hard at some points (but then again you can always use a walkthrough), but the humor is great :) )

Vinnyq12 13-10-2005 05:01 PM

The Goblin games were great, Ingenius puzzles that were a bit hard at times, and yeah the walkthrough was used a lot. Storylines were pants though.

Played the first 2 Legend of Kyrandia games not so long ago but lost interest in them pretty quickly. Just got bored of them plus I'll just bought Half-Life 2 :rifle:

On a seperate note I have to mention Indiana Jones and the Last Crucade.
I played it when I was a Kid and couldn't get anywhere in it then I tried again a couple of years back and I was amazed with it. There were different options and ways to do things like if you picked up some book in the library then you could give it to the radio guy in the castle and make life a whole lot easier. Little details like that make a good adventure game, too many of them can be linear and one way to do one thing .

TaloN 13-10-2005 05:33 PM

broken sword, and the first two discworld games were what i grew up on.

lost on mystery island as well i played to completetion i think

and good old Kings Quest games :D

Quite a nice game, but unfortunately it's rather short. Still worth it, though.

Sebatianos 13-10-2005 07:57 PM

Might I suggest BLUE FORCE? It's short but great :ok:

MdaG 13-10-2005 08:02 PM

My favorite 3:rd person
  • The Dig
  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Grim Fandango
  • Sanitarium
  • Discworld
  • Monkey Island 2
  • Monkey Island
  • Broken Sword
My favorite 1:st person
  • Revelation
  • Riven
  • Exile
  • Myst
  • Aura
  • Voyage
  • Schizm

A. J. Raffles 13-10-2005 09:12 PM

Don't forget Beneath a Steel Sky. That's an excellent point and click adventure as well.

Sebatianos 13-10-2005 09:32 PM

Then there are Simon the Sorcerer parts I & II (3rd part is crappy).

Not to forget some great gmaes - like my favorite p'n'c - Mr. Ripley's: Believe it or not! The Riddle of Master Lu...

actually this has been discused before (just remembered this thread).

Blood-Pigggy 13-10-2005 09:48 PM

It's better to start a new thread than ressurect one.
My all-time favorite point and click is either Sanitarium or Grim Fandango.

Sebatianos 13-10-2005 09:51 PM

But you do get an idea about what other people (even those who won't replay anymore) said about hte same subject...

Anyway - anybody played The City of Lost Children? It had to be one of the first 3D adventures. I hated it back then, but now in retrospect (or simply because I see what kind of games they're putting out) I kindda like it.

BeefontheBone 13-10-2005 09:52 PM

Yeah, because everyone loves having many threads on the same topic with the same people replying in them all....

Wasn't there just 1 Monty Python joke in the second Discworld game? It's been a while since i played it. There was a lovely sequence involving bees (and a similar puzzle towards the end too) that I remember was fun. And croquet.

I remember that game. I bought it in the box when it first came out and was so disappointed. It seemed so dark and downbeat. But like you, Sebatianos, I'd probably appreciate it more now when the dark and downbeat seem the only choice. Back then, though, there were so many fantastic game series to compete with: Zork, Kyrandia, LucasArts adventures, Kings Quest, Kingdom, Broken Sword, Simon The Sorceror...etc . The good ol' days :D

Vinnyq12 14-10-2005 09:47 AM

Ah Simon the Sorcerer was a cool game, I never did understand the logic behind turning the dog into a pair of slippers to get past the sleeping guard - just too random!

2 games I found on Abandonia:
5 DAYS A STRANGER
7 DAYS A SKEPTIC
They're great lil' games.

Never played City of Lost Children, is worth finding?

Grim Fandango wasn't point and click, its the type of game that they made the "next generation" of the Adventure games, I still don't know which was better mouse or keyboard. I suppose its not really about the controls though! Anyway Grim was a fresh breeze for me in Adventure games, I'd nearly lost hope that a new great Adventure game could be made (and was sceptical about lucasarts at the time as they'd been arsin about too much, sort of like now :wall: ) but Grim is brill!.

In Discworld 2, the opening scene was good with the Lethal Weapon ripoff and the game just kept on giving laughs. :w00t:

Vinnyq12 14-10-2005 10:02 AM

How come this was moved? :omg:

Suppose it has gone to a better place :D

BeefontheBone 14-10-2005 10:04 AM

AAAAAARGH! Stop multi-posting!

It was moved because it's about Favourite Oldies...

Vinnyq12 14-10-2005 10:06 AM

BeefontheBone I can tell that your a nice guy

BeefontheBone 14-10-2005 10:23 AM

I am a nice guy - it's just that this is the (duplicate) thread where someone already pointed out that there's an edit button.

Rogue 14-10-2005 10:40 AM

One of the games that stared it all for me (and for many others) is Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders also by Lucas Arts.

Vinnyq12 14-10-2005 10:44 AM

Never played it, would love to give it a go though.

Hmmmm, which game started it for me?

Either:
The Secret of Monkey Island or
one of the Indy games, I really started playing them around the same time. God dam my brain, too much Guinness and not enough memory!!!

I remember it, and liked it already then.. but that was possibly because I had seen the movie (which is excellent) and the game captured the feeling quite ok. Also, I didn't mind the slightly annoying controls.

Gelfo 15-10-2005 01:34 PM

point and click is probably my favourite genre. I like the usual suspects (BS, Loom, BASS, StS, MM etc.)

Monkey Island 1 is the funniest game ever made. Full stop.

Flight Of The Amazon Queen I find is an oft overlooked p&c, if you haven't played it, . . uh.. do.

A. J. Raffles 15-10-2005 03:15 PM

BS? StS??

Mr.Snuggles 15-10-2005 03:29 PM

I really kinda did like Beneath A Steel Sky and Monkey's Island alot.

spazzmonkey_05 15-10-2005 03:42 PM

I' ve been a fan of the Discworld, Monkey Island, and Myst games for a while. But unfortunately, so far, i've only been able to find and play the last 2 Monkey Island games.

Heh, that's funny. I've only been able to find and play the first two Monkey Island games.:D

Tito 26-10-2005 09:03 PM

I've always thought Lucasfilm's games were the bests (specially Monkey Island 1 and 2 and also Loom, though the last is a bit particular game, nor the usual point and click adventure). Maybe you should try Runaway if you can find it (I guess it is still being sold, but at low prices), as it is very interesting and has the feeling of the old adventures.

Chaise 27-10-2005 08:00 AM

Why does everyone forget about 'Heart of China' from Dynamix? Its like one of the best adventure games around. I remember playing that game religiously and was'nt able to complete it coz my computer bugged out! I found a downloadable version of it recently and am totally commited to finishing it!

Nikson 27-10-2005 08:15 AM

Day of the Tentacle
Monkey Island 1,2,3 (haven't played 4, and apparently its much worse than the rest)
Gateway :D

MdaG 27-10-2005 08:37 AM

I thought Monkey 4 was ok, I just hate the controls.

Apocalypse Dude 27-10-2005 10:53 AM

Almost forgotten, Full Throttle and Sam & Max, great adventures, cool puzzle's and lot's of good humor

The puzzles of Sam and Max are not cool. They're just weird and almost impossible unless one resorts to the brute force approach.

TaloN 27-10-2005 11:40 AM

beneath a steel sky drove me mad for years, never could work out what to do to get off the factory level, then realised there was a big red cord to cut.. woops

Taskmaster 27-10-2005 12:17 PM

Adventure games where what shaped my profession as a programmer. I loved adventure games so much that I wanted to write my own, and I did, although nothing retail quality. There were no game design class in college or How-To books back then.

Anyway, I played the old games you probably have never heard of - Asylum, Pyramid, Bedlam, Dallas Quest, etc. - on the TRS-80 and the Color Computer. Of course, I also played them up the line from Scott Adam's to Infocom to Sierra On-Line and Lucas Arts.

I understand it isn't retail quality, but the price is right... I wrote The Monday Adventure, back on an IBM mainframe then ported it many years later to Windows. It is a hybrid of text and point and click. Scott Adams himself said "I love it." It has been dl over 20,000 times, was on Download.com and ZNet for a while.

Yes, I'm asking you to try it out, just for the fun of it. Http://www.MikelRice.com

Also, I have completed a completely text only game - another port from my mainframe days - that I need a beta test or two on. My last beta testers just did not have the love and passion for adventure games so they did "understand" the point.

If anyone would be willing to play test it, please let me know. I really would like to release it this year. Thanks in advance.

:kosta:

Big Red Adventure is one of the best adventure games out there; great plot, wicked characters, hilarious humour, and it takes loooong to complete it. A bit nasty to get running, though.

Gelfo 02-11-2005 09:12 AM

Yeah, I had it on the amiga, it has a quality plot, very intricate

Isn't Dungeon Master an RPG more than a Point and Click adventure?

falkor95 06-11-2005 06:16 PM

yeah sorry about that Tito  I did hesitate when I quoted DM but I love it so much!!! :w00t:

feminista 06-11-2005 06:24 PM

Mmmm... I love point and click adventures.

I'm finally taking the time to finish The Dig now (I started playing the same year it came out, but it wasn't my personal copy of the game, so it's taken me until now to obtain a copy and complete it). I'm right at the end, but I'm stuck. Grr. Still, one of the finest games I've played. Amazing atmosphere, great voice acting, and amazingly, it keeps you hooked in a dead world where you only have two other people (or often one) to talk to.

I was raised on point and click: King's Quest, Legend of Kyrandia 2, The Neverhood, Monkey Island, all sorts of fun stuff. I missed out on a few Lucasarts games, though, and I'm trying to get them now: Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango. I've got a copy of Grim Fandango, and I've just started it.

Mmmm, it's been a long time since I've visited this site.

Well, there are few more claymation games, but unfortunately, none of them are in English, but they are playable. Here are the details:

- Clay Dreams (Russian)
- Last Year's Snow Was Falling (Russian)

The genre is slowly coming back to life. With LucasArts firing all the people that work on adventures games. But they've made new companies.

Double Fine
Psychonauts is they're latest adventure game. It even has a referation to Monkey Island 1.

Telltale
The creators of the Bone games. Also making the Sam & Max series.

Autumn Moon
Consists of a lot of the CMI team. Currently making A Vampyre Story. Pretty much the same interface as CMI too.

Ron Gilbert
Ok, not a company. But he's thinking of making an RPG. BTW, this guy created SCUMM, Maniac Mansion and the almighty Monkey Island.

I've yet to play The Dig. I really need to get a hold of that. Then I've played all the LEC adventure games. And when I finish, I'll have completed all the LucasArtsAdventure Games.
