Guys, I thought maybe the site needed a manual/help reference for newbies. So I started the site manual. I am 1/3 of the way done and thought "is it too redundant? it just copies the site more or less."

Do you guys think my idea is good? Or it's just redundant?

Here is the attachment if you guys wanted to see it:

edit: oh, dang, I think I put it in the wrong forum. Feel free to move it, admins!

Blood-Pigggy 13-08-2005 07:38 PM

I feel strangely overwhelmed.

blastradius14 13-08-2005 07:39 PM

Check your spelling in someplaces. You are calling abandonia abandonic.

Indignus IV 13-08-2005 07:46 PM

@ Blast: I know, I noticed that. Its that the size of the font (10, I think) is so small that the "a"s look like "c"s.

(Don't worry, I won 3rd place in my school spelling bee one year) :D

Edit: wait a minute <takes out magnifying glass> those ARE c's!!!!!!!!!

:kosta:

actually, I thought abandonware itself has no legal status, and w are techinically pirating, which IS illegal, but companies have given us permission, or they just don't care (referring to the first section of it)

Indignus IV 13-08-2005 07:53 PM

You sure? Well, that's what this thread is for: advice.

Yes, I read that part in the FAQ section. I wasnt sure as to what to say about the legality of the abandonware, so I just said it was legal. I can change it though, if you want.

I would say that's up to the admins. Once you finish it, have them go through and be like "no, yes, no no no, yes yes, no" etc.

great. its kinda off on the facts though. like the part about command and conquer being downloadable. Its ESA protected

A. J. Raffles 13-08-2005 10:22 PM

I think it's a good idea, actually, although there are a few errors in the text as it stands (abandonware is not perfectly legal, for example, and the language spoken in Norway isn't Norse ;)). The only problem I can see with it is that hardly anybody ever bothers to read FAQs, which is a shame, obviously, but there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it.
Did you mean it as an addition to the existing FAQ page, Indi, or were you planning on implementing that information as well and replacing it?

punch999 13-08-2005 10:39 PM

and besides it really really sounds like propaganda. Not like just steady advertising

blastradius14 14-08-2005 12:21 AM

It would get annoying if they emailed a finished and properly edited copy to all new members...

punch999 14-08-2005 01:14 AM

Maybe you should make a overall guide to abandonware gaming! :)

Sebatianos 14-08-2005 09:00 AM

I like the idea, but it would need some slight ironing-out.
I think this could be added to every game archive, so people downloading stuff from our site would get this file and would know about us (but first it should only be added to the new updates, changing old archives would be an enourmous task).

Reup 14-08-2005 10:51 AM

And if it was in each archive, it would have to be plain-text without colors and other markup (or alternatively in html). M$ Word is not as widely readable as plain text! And someone would have to make a kewl Abandonia ascii art header for it :P

PrejudiceSucks 14-08-2005 12:02 PM

LOL

Norse!

It´s Norwegian, fool! That would like calling dutch ´lowlandish´. Which it isn´t. So don´t.

No.

No ads in the games. I hate that! Yuck. Let's keep the games true to how they were originally.

Sebatianos 14-08-2005 12:55 PM

OH well. Then maybe just something similar that would be sent to people when they register (you do have to confirm the registration through your e-mail right, been a long time sinse I registred). So with their welcoming e-mail they'd get that message.

Tom Henrik 14-08-2005 12:56 PM

Better. :)

Dino 14-08-2005 02:44 PM

Agreed. That seems the best choice. :ok:

See the similarities?
I already suggested this Seb :bleh:
Too bad they would probably just kill it. The delete button is the friend of many :not_ok:

Lonely Vazdru 14-08-2005 11:19 PM

I'm going to add my two cents worth. I think this is not a bad idea, since the only thing actually available on the site is the FAQ, and many people shy away from FAQs as the deer from the hunter. Now there are people (like me) who'd rather learn by themselves, the hard way. For those it would be useless. But for all the others it could be a good thing. As long as the name of this "Abandonia manual" is attractive enough. So they (at least) give it a try. But it should be on the site. Those .txt files are only read in case of trouble, so anything downloaded with the games is forgotten asap.

Attached thought 1 : Indy wants his VIP status so bad, you should at least consider it. :D

Attached thought 2 : Tom, your new signature's a damn tricky trap ! LOL

ReamusLQ 15-08-2005 12:36 AM

hehe...I really like his new sig...I find it cute! <pets poor abandonia mascot and goes to do a review>

Tom Henrik 15-08-2005 10:19 AM

Thanks, people.

Just don't let this topic go too far off topic :)
