It was already not that good experience with the try to gather people for the 2nd part... :roll:

I have it but the multiplayer in Civ3 is so bad that it is not worth the time invested.

What's wrong with it? (I ask out of interest - never tied it - but want to)

There is a pause after every thing you do. It takes around a second for the game to respond again. Very annoying. It causes the game to become unplayable once you have even a handful of units.
This is what happens when you try and add in multiplayer after the full game has been made. I hope that civ4 (which they are working on now BTW) will have multiplayer support in it from the get go. I also want a new unit system. The game has grown to big for the current system and the combat is bad enough to start crying.

Problem is the time it takes for the Humans to more and make theire turn.. becomes a little slower when you have 300 units ;)

In the single player game that is correct. In multiplayer the problem is not just that. The problem exists from the very first turn. They need to find a whole new way to play the game in Civ4.

Interesting. Have you guys tried FreeCiv? Is that any good multiplayer?

yes it seems to have a few problems even if it's a great game. for example i can't get it run and i have radeon 9200 and celeron 1400. it appears that it's because i have directX 9 installed.

1. why don't you guys try alpha centauri?
2. how about space empires? the game is designed in such a way (appart form normal network play) that it saves a file you then send to other player and he plays his turn and so on. the ships and technology in it (well at least in SE 3) is very much like in star trek. ;)

I have Alpha Centauri and I don't like it. I can't put my finger on just what it is that I don't like but it does not have the correct feel. Possibly I miss the historical aspect of civ possibly I dislike the way the units are handled or the story line that is in the game. Maybe all of the above. I have played it but I will not play it any more.

I love Alpha Centauri, I remember playing on it for 7 hours straight without eating, drinking or realizing that I had been playing for that long! I thought I had been playing for 30 minutes until I saw the clock! The only bad thing about it is that the University has the major advantage because they can research the fastest.

Lol, university is not the most powerful. The hive is. They expand like crazy and just overwhelm everyone else.

I liked the demo of imperium galactica 2. However I think it was quite easy. Once you get to colonize 20 planets and build a spaceship research lab you have won.

:) it happened to me with Space empires. i started them in the morning. i just wanted to see something. well it was dark outside when i realised that i haven't eaten for whole day. and that maybe it's time to quit.

alpha centauri has a big problem with diplomacy. the rest is fine IMO. you contact a nation and then they make you conditions about exchange and when you can't meet them they throw down the phone on you and then you can't contact them again.
plus the races are against eachother in their belief. so i't hard to have a green ally and polute the planet. stupid.

What about age of wonders 2? In my humble opinion there is very good multiplayer. But again game isn`t very good :?

Sorry titan but i gotta say this: Imperium Galactica 2 is a verry good game!

IG2 was nice but not great. The whole gameplay was centred around building one huge fleet and hoping the other guys had fewer ships or lower tech. The story line added a nice element but the micromanagement of all those planets became booring very easily.

Downside is that you perhaps can't instal any patches to the game.. and in this specific one, it's realy needed, as it improves the gameplay.

Civ3 is out on budget now and there is no problem getting the conquerers expansion now. No need to use illegal copies.

Tried Civ 3 multiplayer once, it is horribly slow, even early on, as the Picard said. Although AC runs better online IMO.

As for the University, granted, you can go a long way with a tech advantage, but thats not the only aspect to the game. Come war and the Hive will beat them through numbers, the Spartans through higher morale and the Belivers could simple steal any University base they come across.

i always find the Believers get killed right at the start, and the Gaians are easy to kill but really hard to wipe out completely, they always have one city in some hard to reach place or hidden away somwhere.

I'd be up for some Civ3: Conquests MP, but I reckon it'd have to be on PBM since i rarely have a big enough block of free time for a game in one sitting (PBM also eliminates the time-delay annoyance). If anyone wants to do that, I'd be interested.

Realy gives the units a good balance, and better wonder-setup IMHO.
+ Plauge gives it more of a twist :)

Some units are slightly overpowerd, but hey, everyone got em, so it balance things out.

Realy like locked-ally vs Comp :) Sorry to say, but strategy is more fun in Co-op then vs.

We need to decide what kind of game we're playing, too. I'm fairly flexible on rules/scenarios, but I think we need to do a PBM game - saves having to try and organise times when everyone's free.

I think we should play huge random map, 60% water coverage, difficulty monarch, PBM (definetly).

I'm for 2v2 or 3v3 without computer oppoments.

BTW I'm free after 20h (C.E.T.) every day.

Are we gonna let people choose civs or just go for random ones? And what about barbarians? Victory conditions?

well, if anyone wants to start another one in the meantime I'd be up for that - it's quite easy on PBM to have several games going around (so long as they're clearly labelled saves...) since one turn doesn't take a long time (until later in the game, at least).

yup, conquests with the 1.22 patch - the conquests addon includes the PTW stuff.

The one and only problem would be no.3.
Why? Because when you play Civ3 PBM (play by mail) you have to play only one turn per day! :ok:

There's rules options you can select to speed things up (like elimination, though that's annoying)

:ranting: That's not right! When we played 1v1 then I stopped playing, but when we played 2v2 (with Titan and NrmMyth), Titan said that he can't play.

for years i have been playing burnt or pirated copys of Civilaztion and colonization
untill about last week when i saw civ 3 full version for $20 and the Gold Edition for $45 . I was almost about to buy the Gold Edition of Civ 3 but wonderd if it was worth buying a gold expantion just for multiplayer as i know how long mooves can take on civ 3 playing huge maps when your playing the computer alone .

Is multiplayer really worth another $25 , i dont suppose thier is a free download somewhere i noticed thier was one for Number 2 .
