What is your favorite graphic novel or do you read them?? Mine are in order of favorites:

Case Closed http://www.caseclosed.com
Megaman: NT Warrior
Bone
Lupin(sometimes)
Cowboy bebop
Trigun

I love long works that have been illustrated. I once collected them. By graphic novel, I'm assuming you mean any novel that's been illustrated? If so, I can name names. The Silver Bird is a rare title that's illustrated in pencil. The story is a metaphysical one and the illustrations are huge (double-page spreads in some cases) detailed and dreamlike. The book is in A4 size. Dragonworld is only paper-back size and is also illustratustrated in B& W. Lots of dragons and heroics. My favourite is a hard cover copy of The Hobbit illustrated in colour by Michael Hague. The illustrations really help bring the story and characters to life. Another type of illustrated novel I have is Elf Quest. But that's more of a comic book for adults, I guess.

I belive he means what culturaly ignorant people call "comics" (in addition to the things that actaly are comics- the "funnies", from last page of your daily paper)
my favorites are:
transmetropolitan
the sandman (I like the early issues more)
preacher (it's the one I "currently" read, for about the last 6 months, Im usualy more into books)

TheGiantMidgit 16-04-2005 04:22 AM

Optic Nerve (the best out there in my opinion... just short transcripts from peoples lives, usually lacks an actual plot but it's very well done)
Peepshow
Raw

and their ilk

I don't see any difference beetwen a comic book and a graphic novel, for me it's the same. I don't read them because in Poland they are very expensive, usually more than then books. But I love Asterix and Obelix and Donald Duck (I know it's for kids, but I still like it). WilQ it's also a great one, but it's set in Polish realites and it won't be released anywhere outside Poland.

Sebatianos 16-04-2005 10:13 AM

I simply love Asterix and Lucky Luke... along with some other comics... but those are not Graphic Novels right

there's a *very* blured line between comics and graphic novels. one can say for sure that garfield is a comic, and akira is a grapic novel, but it's hard to classify stuff like Duck tales or Spiderman.

ADDED: in my country only the kiddie comics (like the above mentioned Duck tales) are published, so I have to use pirated stuff, despite the immoral side of it, with whatever money I have, I just can't go halfway around the globe to buy GNs.

Oberon 16-04-2005 11:42 AM

Ever heard from the Book Neuromancer (maybe the grandfather of all cyberpunk related books) the orginal book wasn't a graphic novel but years later some rare neuromancer comic books came out... maybe u find them on the internet 4 free dl.

those are my fav. graphic novels... i also like some game related graphic novels
the best of them imho is the Resident Evil graphic novel..

Havell 16-04-2005 12:10 PM

I only actually possess three graphic novels, but I've read quite a few as I went throug a phase of borrowing piles of them from the library. The ones I possess I consider as true masterpieces though:

Superman: Red Son (which is a story of what it would have been like if Superman had crashlanded in Russia instead of America and had become a communist)
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume One (great)
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Volume Two (also great)

rainwife 16-04-2005 12:16 PM

Margaret Hodges - Saint George and the Dragon (her retelling of Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene) - well, it comes first to my mind, maybe because my english thesis is on dragons

xcom freak 16-04-2005 03:47 PM

Are the japanese mangas with only one word like 'aie' and 'supersaiyen' on a page considerd graphic novels?

a1s 16-04-2005 04:47 PM

how do you mean that? just one word on the whole page? or per frame? I seriously can't imagine comics (mangas) with only one word on the wole page :eeeeeh:

BeefontheBone 16-04-2005 04:53 PM

Oooooh I just started reading Sandman again the other day, so I think I'll go for Season of Mists or possibly Dream Country as the best ones, though the single best story has to be Ramadan, from Fables & Reflections.

Second, probably Preacher - gets compared to the film Dogma, but knocks it into a cocked hat.

Thirdly is Lucifer, the Sandman spinoff. Reading Mansions of the Silence while listening to Ship Of Fools was a top-quality experience.

Sin City would probably feature quite highly, too (Reckon the film will be a marmite-fest, either great or terrible...)

Half the pages of mangas like DragonBall have only one word. If you call argh poof meh words. Even captain Tsubasa have a large lack of words.

Edit : i would've scanned a page for you but i don't have a scanner....or a manga :)

taikara 16-04-2005 05:27 PM

Ranma 1/2,

Card Captor Sakura,

Well... anything by CLAMP, really.

Lizard 16-04-2005 10:18 PM

Well that probably arent graphic novels, but ....
Ranma 1/2
One Piece
Preacher
Punisher
Hellboy
And almost everything else that I borrow/take/steal from someone...

Spookyfish 16-04-2005 10:28 PM

Does Spawn count? I like Spawn :D.

Satanist: What is this place?
Spawn: Don't ask me, it's your Hell.

Other than that... I tried borrowing the Battle Royale manga from a buddy, but when I got to book 7 the nudity, pedophilia, the retundancy of identical emotional scenes, and the over-enthusiastic use of head-shots and flying headguts was too much for me. I quit reading it. That last one was horrible...

 Battle Royale

xcom freak 16-04-2005 10:31 PM

You didn't like Battle Royal?????

Damn i found that was one great manga. The idea, the criticism of society were perfect. I even orderd the DVD from Japan,

Anyway my fav is saint seiya ---> this is the best graphic novel ever, the best story , the best drawings and now the best DVDs.

Fawfulhasfury 16-04-2005 10:48 PM

You should try Case Closed, I know it looks kiddie, but believe me, its not. Its a good detective manga. I love it. I'm gonna buy the dvd collection.

I liked the movie, loved the book, but the manga... Seriously. All of the emotional scenes repeats themselves; two characters talk about their past, then they are suddenly killed by either Mitsuko or Kiriyama. The detailing of how the baseball kid lusted for Mitsuko was just plain old sick. Sure, there were always highlights, but the things I didn't like outnumbered them like ten to one or something. Like I said, I loved the book, and the manga does it justice, but fills out at all the wrong places (what the hell was that with the midget peeing on the bullies!?). Of course, this is just me. The art was lovely though; kudos for that.

The Fifth Horseman 18-04-2005 03:11 PM

Ghost Rider (the v2 with Dan Ketch) - heck, if this aint a graphic novel then I don't know what is one. I'm a fan of anyhting Ghost Rider, BTW.

Status 7 - Breakoff - This is a Polish production, dunno if any of you here ever heard of it - but it's freaking awesome, sorta take Neuromancer and add some wicked cool dialogues too. :ok: Even though it was published in episodes in computer games mag "Reset" (RIP) and I had all of these issues already, I purchased the tome as soon as it appeared.

Universe

Battle Angel Alita

Somwhere in there also the good old Transformers... Autobots, TRANFORM! LOL

EDIT: Gotta make a comprehensive list of these things... there is more then I have listed...

xoopx 18-04-2005 05:50 PM

often a comic series will end up being printed as a graphic novel later.
but some things come out as a graphic novel only.

i like 'ghostworld'

'streak of chalk' (very strange story)

V for vendetta

but i havent read that many graphic novels

cheesegrater 18-04-2005 06:14 PM

I never heard of graphic novels.

So, graphic novels are novels with graphics not novels with graphic descriptions of bloody scenes?

Sabbit 19-04-2005 12:58 AM

Ohh boy... LOL. I collect manga, if that counts. But then again I'm young and can leech off my parents for cash. LOL. My absolute favs are:

Petshop of Horrors
Chobits
YGO (o.o don't shoot!)
Shonen Jump
Yuu Yuu Hakusho

And I love, Love, LOVE the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It's the ULTAMATE Victorian literature crossover fiction-type thing. Plus the fact that the movie could be called LX-Eyecandy. ^_^

GNs are just illistrated novels. Manga, comic books, but not the tiny thin ones. GNs almost always have enough pages to be considered a novel.

And yeah, it isn't just in Poland where they're expensive. A regular manga book, depending on the company printing it, is usually anywhere from $10.00 to $15.00 dollars in the States. It's because alot more work goes into them. There's not just a plot and dialoge, but it takes alot of work and talent to sit there and draw the entire book out, and then some of them are colored. So depending on your opinion, the extra cash can be worth it. Alot of it is opinion, though. Like my parents for whether or not they'll pay for more comic books for their kid, LOL.

No, Donald Duck and his family and friends are just about the only Disney comics I enjoy. Carl Barks was a genius.

As for me... Oh boy. I love comics. (Yes, even "childish" superhero stuff) All kinds, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, horror, romance, intrigue, comedy, and more. Manga tends to annoy me, I don't really like the style. I know that's a sin these days, but tough. There are a few exceptions, like Akira, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Blade of the Immortal. Also, I'd like to read Barefoot Gen.

Some of the super-hero or "mainstream" (pretty much DC and Marvel) stuff in this last isn't EVERYTHING ever written about that character or title, but particular storylines. It would take awhile to name all my favourite, though. However, off the top of my head, in no particular order, here are some:

The Sandman
Starman
Spider-Man
Batman
Superman (Yes, I like the "unrealistic" Superman. Isn't that the point?)
Doom Patrol
Deadpool
Captain Marvel (Especially The Death of Captain Marvel)
The Power of Shazam!
Thunderbolts
Daredevil
Preacher
The Avengers
The Defenders
What If?
Justice League of America
Justice Society of America
X-Men
Alias (Nothing to do with the show)
Squadron Supreme/Supreme Power
The Crow
Tomb of Dracula
Cerebus
The Flash
Batman and The Outsiders (and just the Outsiders by themselves)
From Hell
Watchmen
Kingdom Come
Hellboy
The Amazing Screw-On Head
Sam and Max (Yes, the same characters from Sam and Max Hit the Road)
V for Vendetta
Enemy Ace: War In Heaven and War Idyll
Impulse
The Flash
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
The New Teen Titans
The Demon Etrigan
Young Justice
Astro City
Hellblazer
Lucifer
Swamp Thing
Sandman Mystery Theatre
Wildcats Version 3.0
Stormwatch
The Authority
Transmetropolitan
Hitman
Fallen Angel
Incredible Hulk
Sin City
Tintin
Asterix
The Metabarons
The Technopriests
Epic Illustrated
Grimjack
American Flagg!
Starslayer
The Warlord
The Badger
Nexus
Elementals
Ghost Rider (I prefer Johnny Blaze's stories, Fifth Horseman, but Dan Ketch is cool too)
Invincible
League of Extraordinary Gentleman
Tom Strong
Top 10
Promethea
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (The original and current Mirage series)
Usagi Yojimbo
The Spirit and Will Eisner's graphic novels
The Golem's Mighty Swing
Strangers in Paradise
Conan

Lots more, but that's all I can think of right now! As you can tell, I have a certain taste for comic books. I just like the style of storytelling.

By the way, the usual use of these days is "graphic novel" is simply a fancy way of saying "a single comic story or collection of stories too long for the traditional magazine format". But as Will Eisner defined the term, a graphic novel is one, over 400 page (This length is more of a measuring stick than a hard definition) story. Technically, trade paperback, or TPB is what collections/smaller stories should be refered to. I use it when talking to fellow comic fans, but when talking to other people about it, I use graphic novel, since that term is more widely understood.

Illustrated novels are what traditional text novels with a few drawings are called, actually.

TheGiantMidgit 20-04-2005 02:12 AM

I find, alot of the times, Manga storylines are severly lacking... and yea, the style does get quite irritating.

Just saw Sin City, a pretty good rendition of the comic. I wonder what Watchmen would be like in motion.

it's odd that i haven't seen "Fables" or "100 Bullets" mentioned yet, i know i didn't mention them because i only mentioned the ones i knew the author too....

but Fables is a great story about the fables population like the 3 little pigs and snow white, living in the real world amongst the normal people, yet they are also fighting a war that envolped their own world. a GREAT read

And 100 bullets is classy, sexy and violent. What would you do if you could get revenge on the person who ruined your life? if you were given a gun and 100 untraceable bullets would you take the chance? :ok:

And finally any Batman fans like myself may want to look into "Gotham Central", the tales of the police men and women of the Gotham City Police Department as they try to do their job agains the whackos of the city in the shadow of the bat himself.

Whoops. I forgot all those! Of course I read them! Bill Willingham of Elementals is the writer of Fables.

Also, I've met Brian Azzarello, writer of 100 Bullets, at a convention. Comic cons are pretty cool events. Pretty much all they are is big sales and the chance to meet your favourite creators and hear them speak. I really went there for George Perez, one of my favourite artists. He had some pretty funny stories. I know when most people think of conventions, they think of unshowered, costumed freaks standing in a room smelling bad together, but that's pretty much anime cons, where people come as giant rabbit people and try to get people to participate in their "live action hentai". Not to knock anime fans at all, but if you've been to a con, you'd probably agree with me. Anyway... http://www.georgeperez.com/ I think some of you will like his art. It's been called a little... 80s, but it's attractive, clean and powerful.

Seriously, I couldn't name all of my favourite comics. It's my number one prime interest and hobby.

Although I'd like to make it clear that... I like Aquaman. LOL Yes, I know that in the SuperFriends cartoon, he pretty much existed to get kidnapped, but his more recent comic, by Peter David, was a very fine read.

Okay, I've gone on long enough. If you'd let me, I could go on for hours and hours! But I think this is enough.

I know there are many comics with Scrooge by Carl Barks, but I mean those long ones with only Scrooge, about his history, his early years etc. Are there many of that comics. As I said, I read only two of them and I found his life really fascinating. I like those in modern times, but that history comics are better.

Like I said before, the acutal definition of a graphic novel is a comic book story too large to tell in the traditional monthly magazine format.

However, it can also mean a shorter comic story collected in book format, or a collection of monthly stories. But as defined, that's not true. I hope I didn't confuse you.

good to see someone else has the same love as me on this boards

although i'm highly DC-orientated (And highly Vertigo orientated at that) i'll still read whatever takes my fancy, i usually skip the marvel stuff though because my friend buys all that xmen crap...

i'm a true Batman fan
- Batman
- Batman: Detective Comics
- Robin
- Catwoman
- Nightwing
- Batgirl
- Gotham Central
- Batman: Gotham Knights
- Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight

so many good storylines for the Dark Knight, a few of more recent ones include
- No Man's Land (and the storylines leading up to it)
- War Games
- Hush

I know hundreds of people are Marvel fans, but to me Marvel is too colourful and kiddy at the best of times, sure they have the Max line of "more adult" comics, but most of the time i find the characters boring. And all these recent Marvel movies just keep on getting worse and worse... give me DC anyday

also i'm not DC/Vertigo-exclusive, i still own hefty amounts of Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Americas Best Comics, Wildstorm, and independant comics

I even released my own independant comic last year with the co-creator of my website, we had lots of fun doing it too, you can find it on the website under "concept drawings", its a rather cheerful story about 2 guys making a comic.

It's not just fans who make them. In Denmark they're released commercially (I'm guessing this is the case in many other countries as well), and Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge are probably the most wellknown comic book characters here. The ones by Carl Barks are the best by far, though.

EDIT: I'm a bit unsure about this graphic novel concept, though. It sounds as just another word for comic books, probably used by people who won't admit to reading comics. :D

Can anyone explain this to me?

Can anyone explain this to me?

A lot of people use it like that... Not me. Why should I be ashamed of an interest? That's just stupid.

Anyway, here's what Wikipedia has to say.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_novel

I thought Will Eisner had originated it. Huh. Learn something everyday.

The article has a slight tinge of "superheroes are for kids and drooling idiots!" but all the examples it cites are good works.

I don't think it's inappropriate to call comics of all kinds comics... It may sound "childish", but fantasy is called fantasy, and that term kind of makes it sound frivolous, doesn't it?

I completely agree. It seems to me that the term graphic novel is mostly used by adults to legitimize reading comics. Nice link, but the article seems to imply that any comic book that isn't humourous is a graphic novel, which means superhero comics are graphic novels, too.

TheGiantMidgit 21-04-2005 01:21 AM

Well, Eisner used the term "graphic novel" because he feared "comic book" would degrade the work. Kind of ironic, as it actually was a book.

Well, I've read plenty of hilarious superhero comics. And plenty of graphic novels that are, too. I think by "humourous" it means "comic strip", actually.

You're probably right. That would mean that Donald Duck is a graphic novel. :D

EDIT: Well, not the Donald Duck strips, obviously.

Half the pages of mangas like DragonBall have only one word. If you call argh poof meh words. Even captain Tsubasa have a large lack of words.

in japan dragon ball z, (pronounced dauragonballzay) is an extreme insult if som e one calls you it they comparein you to being as shoddy as the animation quality on the show an the art in the comics :tai:

Flop 21-04-2005 02:06 AM

Yeah, there are some truly horrible mangas out there, but there are also some very good ones. I admit that I haven't read that many mangas, but Ghost in the Shell, for one, is truly excellent, IMO (and Dragonball Z just sucks).

omg 21-04-2005 02:12 AM

crying freeman the graphic novels were amazing with just master minamilism, and yosaji yojimbo is cool, traditional tales of samari morality told through a giant rabbit :max:

Usagi Yojimbo isn't a manga. The subject matter is 17th Century Japan, and the creator, Stan Sakai is Japanese (even though he was raised in Hawaii) but Sakai himself has said many times that it is not a manga.

Also, lack of text does not mean lack of quality. Pictures tell a story as well, and it takes a special kind of craftsmanship to be able to convey an idea without words.

Ragnarok? As in the Norse apocalyptic battle with the frost giants? Is that last thing Lucifer, the Sandman spinoff? If so, good choice - it's ace.

Well, that one isn't really that bad... plus it has a certain twist to the story. Basically becoming Aliens 5 + Terminator 4 all-in-one.

o my word .... talk about semantics, stan said its not a manga cuz manga means "irrresponsible pictures" and yosaji isnt gratuoitus in any way and is considered by some to be educational. so i guess u tinkin i is baka gaijin hey?

Allen 22-04-2005 06:11 PM

I don't read "Graphic Novels" myself, but my pal does. His favorite is a Manga novel called "Battle Royale" where kids are sent to a remote island, get an explosive collar put on their neck and are forced to fight eachother to death, Lord of the Flies style. If they don't fight, the collars explode. If they try to escape, the collars explode. If they don't kill someone every 3/4 hours, the collars explode.
Pretty sick, but my freind seems to like it. :D

a1s 22-04-2005 06:29 PM

there are two movies made based on that one (at least one of the movies is based on it, the sequel is loosly based on the ideas in the first movie)

No, he said it because it's an American comic. Also, it's spelt "Usagi". And I don't consider you to be a "baka gaijin" because I don't speak nor am I Japanese.

Far from it, Ragnarok is an online RPG that has a rather modest following. It's all cutesy anime crap with jelly beasts and happy people running around

The Manga is based on that :ok:

http://www.dreamstation.cc/news/imag...gnarok_001.jpg

The only thing it has in common with the Norse Ragnarok is the name....

unless there is ANOTHER Ragnarok involving Frost Giants and all things awesome, if so please tell me

Watchmen
V for Vendetta

Rave Master (manga, but they also adapted the TV series originally called Rave Adventure Groove to graphic novel form).

If the graphic novel bits in both Max Payne games count, they are amazing. I love the beautiful drawings and also play put forward in them. After I completed the game, I saved just at the last point (on both) so that I could see all of the Graphic Novel parts of the games.

Rogue Trooper from 2000AD is one of my favourites. Dredd himself was cool, but Rogue Trooper was way better. DR and Quinch were also cool.

If only there were Deus Ex graphic novels, that would rock. A UFO: Enemy Unknown set of graphic novels would be a bit niche, but I bet that they'd rock.

Battle Royal is pretty sweet, but massively violent. Teenagers in Japan camped outside of cinemas to see it, governments tried to ban it. Damn it is sweet.

The Sequel was OK, but it got really, really political nearer the end. You can tell that the director's father died quite early on in the film, the whole focus shifts very quickly in it.

The thread from this point onwards is the "What Comics/graphic Novels Do You Own?" thread, merged into the old one about the same thing - havell

Bill Watterson is a being of pure intellectual brilliance.

Havell 20-11-2005 08:45 AM

I've got a few Alan Moore comics. I've got Watchmen, League of Extradinary Gentlemen (parts 1 + 2) and From Hell. I've also got SUperman: Red Son, which is about what it would have been like if Superman crash-landed in the Ukraine and had become a communist.

That and several years of Beano and Dandy comics stashed up (I bought them from 1993 - 1999).

BeefontheBone 20-11-2005 11:34 AM

Didn't we do this at least once already?

I cant decide which manga is the best I've ever read, so here's a couple of them:

Ichigo100% - a school romance, but a really good one. And it's also drawn with prety cute graphics.
Hellsing - vampire chaos!!!
Naruto - ninja action
