What's your favourite comedy series?
Mine are "Black Adder" and "Only Fools And Horses" , gotta love that British humour... Out of animated Simpsons and Futurama are my favourite, it figures because they're from the same creators... |
You're my man, Tulac! I just adore British humor!!!
Black Adder, Only fools and horses, Monthy Phyton series, Mr. Bean... truly legendary! But my favourite by far is FAWLTY TOWERS!!! John Cleese is absolutely superb! |

Was it shown on Croatian TVs, and where can you get it? |
In terms for Cartoon Comedies it would have to go Simpsons (Although more the earlier stuff like seasons 3-10) than Family Guy, than Futurama, all great shows shame though that Futurama got canned.
But Family Guy makes up for it, and with new episodes hitting May 1st along with American Dad, I'm going to be watching and laughing. LOL |

Was it shown on Croatian TVs, and where can you get it? [/b][/quote] Yes it was, on Nova TV, but a year ago... You can buy DVD's at Algoritam in Gajeva... However, they are original BBC series without croatian titles, just english, dutch and so... I didn't mind because I watched it so many times that I knew all in advance... :D |
Becker - I love his cynicism.
|
That's showing now here in Croatia, wow haven't seen Ted Danson on TV since the Cheers...
Out of the American shows I like Seinfeld... |
...Cosmo and his cigars LOL
|
Out of typical comedy shows on tv, I'd say I like Everybody loves Raymond, According to Jim, Fraser.

Not to mention his hair :w00t: |
I am a big fan of sitcoms in general but only a few stand out for me.
- Fawlty Towers, only 12 where ever made but it remains the number one sitcom of all time for me. - Frasier, American TV at its best. I want this series in its entirety on DVD - Coupling, at first I thought this was nothing more then a Brittish Friends rip-off but I was wrong. It is a delightfully wickid series and I am glad I have season 1-3 on DVD - Friends, I have this in its entirety on DVD and watch a few episodes every once in a while. Wonderfull but the last few seasons only rarely came up to the level of the first 5 or 6 seasons. A pitty. Note worthy series, The Young Ones, A Brittish comedy series that lasted only 12 episodes (two seasons same as Fawlty Towers) and aged rappidly because of its dependency on of 1980's youth culture reffenrences. I still love it. Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister, Brittish political satire at its marvelous best. Only its narrow appeal (politics not being for everyone) makes this series miss out one of the top spots. Northern Exposure, American absurd comedy. Great for the first two or three seasons but it lost a lot after that. Not for everyone. Many more series deserve mention but they already have been mentioned before or I just can't think of them at the moment. |
Friends
Malcolm in the middle Simpsons Frasier I haven't seen Fawlty towers for years, but I remember enjoying it What I've seen of the Black Adder was hillarious! Coupling Joey is okey... |

My all time favourite sitcom has to be Futurama (if that even counts as a sitcom). It can be enjoyed on so many levels. I have the series in its entirety and every time I rewatch an episode I find something new to laugh at, that I missed before. Why Fox cancelled this is beyond me. |

"Third rock from the sun"... it just DOESN'T get much better than this. :D
"Black Adder" was great as well, as was the Flying Circus. Simpsons didn't last THAT long, as much as the quality of humour was concerned. Futurama should've had some more Episodes. Other than that, nothing really outstanding comes to mind right now... |
@DeathDude: Did you refer to the Simpsons as "anime??"
Black Adder: :ok: Futurama: :ok: Family Guy: :ok: Drawn Together: :ok: Surreal Life: :ok: Aqua Teen Hunger Force: :ok: :ok: :ok: :D |
Ack, I guess I did :wall: my bad.
Well I'll take that out. |
Frasier.
Seinfeld Family Guy (sometimes) Get Smart Beverly Hillbillies Whose Line is it Anyway |
I agree with all of the above but i must add 'That 70's show'.
PS : Simpsons is my fav. |
Friends ^_^ I love that show... "Joey" isn't too bad either.
Other than that... I don't watch much tv any more :\ |
I can not believe Seinfield only got one mention, it is the greatest comedy show ever made and you have all given it the shoulder. I'm disgusted. :ranting: :ranting: :ranting: :ranting: :ranting:
Fawlty Towers comes next. Then the rest just stumble along blindly in the background, even though a lot of them are great they just have nothing against Seinfield or Fawlty Towers. And Deathdude was right. The later series of simpsons are pure rubbish, I hardly watch the new ones anymore. Another one of my favourites that I don't think has been mentioned is Two and a Half Men. Spin City was good till Michael J Fox left. Malcolm in the Middle is good. My Wife and Kids is good because they all over act, hilarious. And the last one I will mention is Black Books, another very good British comedy along with Coupling. |
Yeah after about season 11 or 12 when Matt Groening left the show, it went downhill, very quickly, the newer episodes have lost all it's charm from the older ones, the writers are trying to force down the humour, but it just doesn't seem to be natural.
I can't believe I forgot to mention, That 70's show, Whose line is it anyway, and 2 and a half men, all great comedies that I love to watch as well. |
I've heard about Fawlty Towers... I'll have to check it out :D
|
I suggest you check it out as soon as you can.
I can't believe Matt Groening is letting this happen to Simpsons, I think he still has control over whether it is still to be made, cause my brother was telling me he saw an interview with Matt Groening and he said he's just going to run it into the ground until people stop watching it, he doesn't seem to care about it anymore, but the thing is no one is going to stop watching the simpsons, if they keep making them people are still going to watch them. |
Yeah essentially that's his role, but he doesn't have a lot of input into the show like he used to have. It's a good question how many more seasons they will continue to produce, at this level the fan base will really drop off, although I've heard plans that they also want to do a Simpsons movie, that'd probably be the last simpsons we will ever see, I think it's due out in 2006 or 07 I remember reading. Although I'm not really looking forward to it.
|
No that definently isn't a good descision, and although I'd like to agree with you that it would destroy the simpsons once and for all I just don't think it will.
Like you said if they had just stopped at searies 11 or 12, then it would be one of the greatest comedies around along with Seinfield because that is exactly what Seinfield did, he stopped it because he didn't want it to turn out like the simpsons has turned out now. |

Futurama,
Becker. I thought that Futurama was MUCH better than the Simpsons... Never seemed to take off in this country though... Other than those I don't watch TV... I watch the news and Movies if anything good is on The rest of my time is devoted to my pc  |
I can't believe i'm the first to put Red Dwarf up..if you haven't seen it and you like "brit-witt" check it out

One thing I like about the show is that it's about a family that is not well off, well they are well off enough to get by, but they have money problems and their lives aren't perfect. This is great change to all the american shows and movies we see of people who have a lot of money have pretty much perfect lives. EDIT And of course it is absolutly hilarious. |
can you say married with childeren? LOL
|
Married with Children - Hell YEAH!!! I just love Al (and what about Kelly...). Seriously - I think Ed O'Neil is a great actor (saw him in a couple of other movies), it's just a shame everybody always sees the image of Al Bundy in him.
Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister - excelent comedy! Faulty Towers - they just started swohing them again in Slovene private TV (Prva). Maybe our Croations friends (they said they wanna watch it) can catch this chanell? I can't believe no one has mantioned 'Alo 'Alo yet - but then again it's something you should say: Only Once! Only Fools and Horses - great show (poor Rodney) Monty Python - excelent Black Adder (don't be fooled - it should be much higher up the list) Has anybody seen 'The Piglet Files' - I loved them! Spin City - some episodes were simply great! Fresier - it has class What about some of the classics: The Addams Family, McHale's Nave, Mr. Ed,... I could go on for ages (almost)... I'll just add one more (a Slovene original - not many quality stuff of our own production): Mali oglasi - Paper Adds! |
Yup - I can agree with you Seb - awlays:)
Btw. Would South Park come into this category? |
Yes but it's not really worth talking about.
|
Whats wrong with South Park?
South Park is Schweeeeeeet! :ok: |
I've never been a really big fan of it. I watch it every now and then, but it's never been a major priority.
|
No one mentioned 'allo-'allo?
It’s understandable, as most of board members were not born at the time that was popular. (Still using that "gut'n morgan" as greetings :)) I used to watch Married with Children, Tool Time (nice performance by Tim Allen), Everybody loves Raymond and long time ago Black Adder. Simpson’s have some good episodes, but mostly are not that funny... |
Yeah 'Allo 'Allo was a great show. I haven't seen it in ages, though.
I agree totally that Simpsons has been crap for a while now, and I've stopped watching it. It's more or less turned in to a lame slapstick show. As a matter of fact I think that most sitcoms stay on for too long, and start to get a bit pathetic. I can understand why the actors and the studios keep making them, when they make money, even though they're not really funny any more, but I don't respect it. Seinfeld was a great example of a show finishing while on top, instead just keeping on to make more money. As I said most sitcoms don't do this, IMO, and eventually turn into some kind of soap opera (who slept with who, etc.). Futurama is another show that not only finished on top, but could've easily stayed funny for at least a couple of more seasons. Sadly, it didn't make enough money (according to Fox, those bastards!). |
Malcolm in the Middle (Funny! :) )
Simpsons (what should I say,classic...) Monthy Python (same as above) South Park (well I must admit that aproximetly one chapter of ten is really funny. The others... ) Frasier (love this serie!) Hercules, Andromeda, Smallvile, etc...(i admit it looks strange and actaully dont belong here, but when I got right mood I can sit -forever- and laught on their bad acting, and really stupid story and absolute HILARIOUS dialoges.Heh :D ) |
Quote:
South park is the same except that the novelty lasted a bit longer... :ok: Oh and 'Allo 'allo was great! :D |

The last series of the Simpsons started to pull it back, but it's not anywhere near as good as it was from about series 3 to 5 or 6. Now Futurama, that's funny. Stands up to repeat viewing much better than The Simpsons, too. |
Jeff left after season 3. Season 4 was without Jeff and it did hurt the series but there where still worthwhile episodes and funny bits. I am not aware of season 5 being ever made and I doubt they will do so given the negative feedback on season 4.
|
Oh and how could I have forgoten M*A*S*H!!! That was one of the best series ever (not necesarelly that funny - but very good). Especially the later episodes got better and better - and more serious!
|

Have you seen Human Traffic? Richard Coyle has a part in that, as does Andrew Lincoln from Teachers in the section about spliff politics, which is truly amazing. |
No never heard of it. Is that from UK commercial television? I can only get BBC1+2 in the Netherlands.
|
You can wake me day and night for the Simpsons! Since they're coming out on DVD a season a year now, I can watch them over and over and over and over and over... (which I do). Thankfully my GF, who never used to like cartoons at all, has finally been brainwashed by me and can now fully appreciate Matt Groenings excellent creation.
(Futurama, Family Man and Duckman are also pretty awesome...) British comedy is usually a hoot! I've been taping Monty Pythons ever since the late-eighties, gathering more and more episodes at every re-run... Great stuff! For American sitcoms: MASH! |
I heard metion of a RedDwarf movie in the works
|
There are the obvious ones:
The old Simpsons Futurama Family Guy but also lesser known british comedies: -Allo Allo (I remember watching it a long time ago and by the end of an episode I couldn't stop laughing at the unfortunate turn of events and idiotic phrases like: "oh look, a flying nun!") -Father Ted, this one gained a bit of popularity in the UK but didn't receive much attention in the rest of the world, nevertheless me and my brother liked the silly humour. I mean the plot alone: The life inside a Parochial House on an unknown island off the coast of ireland right next to a radiactive dump. -The League of Gentlemen (first two seasons) is also british humour but darker, MUCH darker. The first two seasons are brilliantly dark and decadent but the later seasons went over the top with the sex jokes... it simply became distastefull(er) |
I used to watch Malcolm in the Middle, back when it first started and loved it, now not so much, the series has changed a lot unfortunately, but whatever.
Anyone seen American Dad? Back when they first showed a preview episode on the superbowl weekend? Made by Seth Mcfarlane same guy who made Family Guy, going to be an interesting show... |
I saw the first episode of American Dad, looks interesting.
Klaus:"I used to have a dog, und arms, und legs! I was an olympic skier before the CIA switched mein brain with that of ein goldfish! " Stan: "well what were we supposed to do, jsut let east-germany win that gold medal!? Not on my watch" |
Good to find someone who liked the first episode, alot of people on the boards I go to started to rant off, how it's going to suck and whatnot, based on the one episode, come on who judges a series on the first episode.
Yeah that scene was great, one of my favourites, also when Stan stole that girl's purse so that his son could catch him, and just goes off easily out running his son, classic. Stan: (In the Car) Okay, so I overdid it. |
Its a good pilot episode, but ofcoarse since it is the first episode the series still needs to kick off. Youc an't expect it to be brilliant if you've still got to introduce the characters.
if there is one thing I've learned its that most people like to whine, nothing is ever good, its always bad and evil and boring. |
I think a lot of sitcoms sort of run out of good material after a certain amount of years, for example I love the first 5 series of Friends, but then it starts to become a bit old. The simpsons I don't think I could ever get sick of, the writers' sence of satire and politically incorrect sense of humor is not going to start boring me anytime soon
|
I don't know what happened to the simpsons after season 12, yes as a show goes longer and longer, lack of ideas and such can happen, but honestly it seems like the people writing the simpsons now a days, are no where near the level of writing from earlier. I wouldn't be surprised, if many of them left the series, for some reason or another.
Every now and then there will be a decent episode, but the ones from the last 4 years, I can't remember a lot of memorable ones, than I can with the earlier years. |
