Feel free to comment and discuss this game here. Also, if you have any useful tips or tricks don't hesitate to share them with the others! Thanks!

Just two small notices...
1. To go to the options panel you must press the O-button. 2. I'm going to look for the manual to the game as I believe it will enhance the playability of the game a lot! Have fun in the mean time :) |
The zip file is empty.

Hey when I play this game in XP it always freezes.... But it's said to be compatible with XP.... should I try it in DOSBox? I don't like DOSBox.... Too complicated for my tiny brain.... Maybe it's just my computer that's slow.... I dunno..... Has this happened to anybody else?

I'm having the same problem...frequent freezing. Any other way I can run the game so it won't freeze?
|
I have the manual for this game in pdf format if you want it. I think I already uploaded it though.
|
Can one of the moderators followup with the above poster - i think the manual would be a nice addition. :D
|
Ehm... I can't see manual. :help:
|
There is an oldie Fellowship of the Ring? Wow... I didn't know that. I only played Vivendi's LOTR Fellowship of the Ring a couple of years back.
|
Yes it's old and very good.
But it seems that noone wants to help me with the manual. Please, help. :help: |
Where would one find such a manual? Maybe somebody actually owns the game and can scan the manual and publish it as a .pdf file.
|
Grinder, read the thread carefully. :max:
|
|
I've read it carefully, can't find the manual. Had this game a LONG time ago, but no longer have the manual. Since I'm a big fan of the game and like to find little side quests that give it its unique flair, having access to the paragraphs is important. Any thoughts?
|
Ach, not used to this board's format, didn't see page 2. Sorry.
|
How do I save? :wall:
|
:bye: :D
Just downloaded the game and will see how it plays I am hopeful but cautious as I really love the books and am not overly impressed with adaptations, the movies simiply was aweful, a dark biker drama, with silly things added to it to "holywoodize" it with simply idiotic things. the original story is epic, deep, draws to the heart of some very ancient traditions, and lore, and the word descriptions are far reaching and full of meaning and scale. But it will be interesting to see what the game designers do with this. Here's hoping! :D |
The special edition of this game is actually better; excellent music, improved sound, and better cutscenes from the original animated movie. :O
|
anyone know where to get the maps for this game, i remember years ago having a map of the shire and stuff, but woulnt know where they got to...

If you're having trouble with freezing it's the music. Just go to SETUP and set the music and FX to Internal Speaker. Then Save and begin.
Doesn't even need DOS box! |
Hi,
I have completely reverse engineered the data format and rewritten the game for Linux (but you may be able to compile for windows too). See http://www.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~benes/lotr/ So, if you are interested in some cheats, goodies and solving all sidequests do not miss it. Michal |
Does anyone know where I can find the cd rip version with the movie clips? I have searched all over the net.
|
Quote:
|
I'm quite sure. The remake of the Interplay LOTR1 had clips from the Bakshi movie, but also had other innovations (like a minimap) that made it easier and more fun to play.
|
Well, I don't think I've ever seen the CD version anywhere. I still have the floppy version which had that bug about the homicidal wall. :D
|
Yeah, there was a CD version with wonderful symphonic music throughout, animated clips from the early cartoon movies, and lots of sound effects. I've got it AND the two towers on CD.
Only problem is that it doesn't work very well in DosBox OR in VDMsound. |
Both work perfectly with Windows 98, though.
|
Great game with a lot of freedom and hundreds of side quests. It is huge and it doesn't follow the book very strictly. I remember, for example, that you could keep Gandalf with you after scaping Moria if you were a bit cautious.
|
It works on XP too, as far as I know.
I actually own the original floppy version of this! I might be able to give you guys a manual scan. Boy, this game had one fantastic manual, in fact, it was good reading material before you went to sleep. Pff, manual is already there. Mine's better. :bleh: Edit once again. You call this a manual, it's just a text copy, :w00t: . A scan would be much better, all those pictures! |

Mmm, I'll try to get the scanner working again.
Just as long as you realize that the scan will take a loooong time, this manual is pretty big for it's time. |
Yes, I remember it having about as many pages as the SimCity 2000 manual. Well, never mind, it'll probably take a while until it's added to the site as well; the box scans I did months ago are still not up yet... But it would be nice to have the scan of the manual on the site sometime.
|
I find there's one single walkthrough for this game remaining online, and it doesn't cover everything.
I found an apparent use for the Ice Staff from Withywindle's cave - in Moria, the very bottom level, with the Balrog's throne, if you approach the huge lava pool with some sort of pit in the middle, you get a message about the ice staff shooting out steam and letting you walk on lava. Unfortunately, if you continue to walk forward, you just plain die anyway. You also don't get the ice staff message from any other lava pool in the game. I've tried using everything i can think of; skill, item, or otherwise. Anyone have any idea what to do with this? |
i know a little cheat/secret or so to make it easier at one point.
dont know if it still works, cause i havent reached that part on my new version of it, but it did when i used to play it. ok, when you reach Rivindell, you pretty much fill up your party right? well, remove sam, and recruit Bilbo.(after getting sting from him, otherwise you cant get it.) now you will face only one hydra when entering the mines of moria. |
I missed the entire series when it in the shops!
Just wondering can they be downloades? Perhaps an idle rambling  in the dark? |
Of all the people around here, I thought you had a good idea on what does ESA protection mean...
You might try the usual: checking the online stores linked to in a sticky thread somwhere around, second-hand purchase or, finally, contacting the copyright holder. |
I knew it, I knew it! :D It was just an idle and silly question anyway :ok:
|
LOL, more than four months ago I said I would get an actual scan of the ginormous manual, with all the images and layouts included.
I guess I'll be able to do that in a bit since I'm getting a new working scanner :D |

ha ha, can't believe I'm not the only one who still plays this game. Barring few small issues that I never quite cleard up think I've just about solved every side quest in the game, so if anyone has any questions and needs a solution just post them and I'll probably be able to answer them. Same applies for two towers if anyone plays that game.
Some Fellowship Unsolved quests that may be of interest are however: 1. Swan Sealed Tomb in the barrow downs (famous one from interplay forum days) - as far as I know noone has been ever able to find the key or word of power that lets you in. Prob nothing in it anyway but its strange that the barrow would be there for no reason. 2. Death of Ned Bushdock in Bree (happens when you return to Bree from Rivendell) Only thing I've found is the librarian blaming the people in Gorthad, but noone in Gorthad owns up when I slaughter them all. Rayf Brogan also is recruitable as a result but he's a fairly useless character and seems to serve no purpose. 3. Word of Power !DURIN, received by Gimli in the forge in Moria, I remember someone on Interplay forums once told me what it did, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. There's some other item or spell that does the same thing anyway. 4. Finally theres a few items like the leaf belt and the light gem that have no obvious use which is a rarity for items found rather than bought, but I doubt there is anything to solve there. Two Towers Unsolved Quests 1. The black pillar in the passages under Isengard - theres a mention of it in one of Saruman's letters but I can't work out its significance aside from that. 2. Dude in the destroyed Rohirrim village - he seems to have some secret, but apart from the odd lie he tells he doesn't aid in solving any sidequests or anything. |
Hi Nob,
1) I had a look in the game script and there really is no way to get in. For one or other of the barrows (perhaps this one, but I forget) there is a string that was supposed to be shown if you have ranger lore. It says something along the lines of "nothing opens this barrow (except perhaps time)". However the string fails to appear due to an error in the script. 2) We'll never know unless someone asks the designer ... Again there is an unused string in the game, where you actually find Ned Bushdock's body somewhere on the Bree map. No idea in what location that string belongs. It implies that Ned was scared to death and someone comments that he was "the sturdiest hobbit in Bree". 3) IIRC, the brown bird in the Lorien caves. Use either !Durin or Durin's Pick (but this is from memory, have to check) /a.k.a. Gildor on the Interplay forum :) |
I just discovered that we have it on PS 2...will try it there :brain:

First of all I don't understand what you mean by Interplay titles? This DVD title reads The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers. By EA Games.
Well that's on the box! Anything else, then I'll have to ask my grandchildren since they play it? :) |
By 'Interplay titles' I referred to the games 'Lord of the Rings Volume 1' and 'Lord of the Rings Volume 2 -- Two Towers' from Interplay. Good old PC games! Personally I don't like the later ones from EA very much.
|
Hehehe wish I had the PC version. Ah well sometimes you miss the goodies:(

There's also those four guys molesting the healer in Archet, I remmber once finding someone who said the healer was having trouble with men or something, can't find that anymore though. !Durin word of power is indeed that pile of rocks near where you help the eagle. I wish there was a #3 :( |
Rayf: it's intentional that you can recruit him. Why? No idea.
Missing #3, yes it's sad. But, someone could mod #1 (game script, map, ...) :) |
No I meant is the string where you find neds body a script error? I'm guessing what was meant to happen is you recruit rayf and wander around a bit and eventually find ned somewhere.
|
Ah, OK. No, with the barrows, the string is in the script, but that particular part of the script doesn't work. But the string about Ned simply wasn't used. There are quite a few unused strings in the game, particularly on the Barrow Downs map. You can often tell where they were meant to be used from context and from Paul Jaquay's design draft (http://www.jaquays.com/paul/lordoftherings.htm). I don't know though where the string about Ned was supposed to appear (except that it must be somewhere on the Bree map).
|
:w00t: Got the first one now will have to play it to discuss anything about it. Busy reading the manual!

I have the game from the Interplay 10 Year Anniversary CD-ROM that was released a few years back.
However, I've tried downloading Volume II: The Two Towers from various different abandonware sites. The game works, but as soon as you start playing (as Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli), the character animations glitch up and turn into a bunch of scattered pixels. The game works if you change video drivers, but a lot of the vibrant colors are lost. Does anybody know how to fix this? I've tried replacing various files in Volume II from my working copy of Volume I, but I don't understand which ones to replace, and as such have not been able to make The Two Towers run well. I hate to say it, but I probably won't bother to play it if every character looks like a glitch in the graphics. Help! |
I had that problem, but only when windows updates decided to activate over the top of the game. I'm no techie, but i'm guessing its a memory issue as overall #2 is much more stable than #1 and that's about the worst problem I had even when running from a windowed msdos.
Are you using dosbox? |

You need to use the latest version of DOSBox for The Two Towers to run properly. It had some graphics issues that weren't fixed until fairly recently, as far as I remember.

This game is one of the greatest--I actually liked it more than the 2cnd part, because the whole thing was tighter-knit.
Some questions: 1. I found the Torc of Maladan, but I have no clue what it does. Does anyone know? I DO know that if you find it with Aethelwyn, it's one of the situations where she turns traitor on you. (This didn't happen to me until i was leaving Bree, the first time I played it.) Ralf brogan wants the Torc of Maladan, but after you find it he's not in his house! So what's going on here? 2. In Dol Guldur, when going to free Samwise, one room is messed up with a warning: "not all is as it seems." I used Galadriel's word of power to "counter deception" but this doesn't seem to do anything. Instead i had to grope my way blindly, with quite a few time restoring, before i safely found the stairs down. Was this a glitch? Or was I supposed to do something else? 3. A dwarf in one of the inns tells me a dragon has been seen flying about the misty Mountains. I never found it. Was this a red herring? 4. I put Hawkeye's ring on his tomb after he died, but his ghost still attacks me in Moria. I think there's been a glitch. And, some things of interest: All those birds you free are actually parts of Radagast, who Saruman turned into a thousand birds. Freeing them serves no purpose, however, because after you kill the werewolf posing as Radagast and free the bird in the cage, all the birds come together to form the real Radagast again. If you find Hawkeye after Aragorn joins you, he doesn't die--you can recruit him and he'll re-unite with his wife! Ah, happy endings. |
1. As far as I know it does nothing.
2. Strange, using !MELIAN when you get that message should do the trick. Sounds like a glitch. 3. Yes, it's a red dragon, sorry red herring. 4. Yup it's a bug ... I don't think Aragorn has a part in Hawkeye's survival but it's a good idea. I might try to implement that ... and add a brown bird subquest :) |

(This didn't happen to me until i was leaving Bree, the first time I played it.) Ralf brogan wants the Torc of Maladan, but after you find it he's not in his house! So what's going on here? You do indeed give the Torc to Rayf Brogan, there is a glitch however. He gets moved from the door to his room when you say BREEHILL so he canot open the door a second time. The way round it is of course get the torc then BREEHILL into Brogans house then trade it to him. In return he gives you the second page of Barliman's letter. I recall it works for me however it is a waste of the word in any case. To the South-East of Dol Guldor just east of the road) is a set of barrows where the ghost king from the shire is hanging around. Ifyou have Aragorn (and maybe even if you dont) you can recruit him and go and kill the wights and get a magic glass. This serves the same purpose as !MELIAN. You can then use !MELIAN when a party member goes nuts on the prison level downstairs or also to reveal Radagast. 3. A dwarf in one of the inns tells me a dragon has been seen flying about the misty Mountains. I never found it. Was this a red herring? It may be referring to the strange lights on weathertop (which is actually gandalf), but yes it is a red herring 4. I put Hawkeye's ring on his tomb after he died, but his ghost still attacks me in Moria. I think there's been a glitch. This seems to happen even when Hawkeye is reunited with his wife. But he only attacks you near ori and oins area and he gives you a useful piece of info anyway. If you dont use the signet ring in the tomb however he attacks you on the first level of moria as well. So yes its a glitch but using the ring still helps sort of. To save Hawkeye all you have to do is walk East as soon as you find him, the other three directions will encounter you with an orc and get him killed saving you in his cave. The best thing to do is go south west straight from the elves and loot his cave, then return to the very centre of the stone ring (that way nothing will impede your eastward path) and walk east and then run east as soon as you recruit hawkeye. |
Torc of Maladan: Ah yes, I forgot about the letter!
BTW, in the 'enhanced' cd version you get a range error in the cave where you find the torc. Again this is due to a script error. Saving Hawkeye: http://web.comhem.se/~u19128212/1e.htm |
You cannot always use either !Melian or the magic glass IIRC, but in some cases you can use either !Melian or Countermagic. BTW did you know that you can Countermagic away the fog on the Barrow Downs (temporarily)?
|
Thanks, guys!
I actually went back to the game a little while ago, and found out the whole magic glass thing myself. Before that day, I never bothered saving Sam, I just headed up the tower right off the bat to complete the game. Another thing about the dragon; I flipped through the manual, and found one paragraph which has Smaug (!) saying that he smells one of Bilbo's descendents. Are you SURE its a red herring? Next: apparently you can mug some robbers at one point in the game. I wondered if anyone found out how. One scrren-shot i found shows Tom-Bombadil with the fellowship in Gorthad. Is there some way to make him join your party permanently? |
Smaug: Yep we're sure :)
Robbers: off the top of my mind, you can meet some along the road east from the Shire. Tom Bombadil: It happened to me once but only in the 1.0 version of the game (the buggy one). It was when Bombadil appears to free you from Old Man Willow (use !HelpHelp). By some glitch he remained when he was supposed to disappear and then he followed you as if recruited. You cannot recruit him by normal means. |

http://web.comhem.se/~u19128212/ First I'd like to congratulate him, afterwards ask if he plans to end the maps/solution for the 1st game. I believe the best bet we have to fix the in-game scripts is by using Michal Benes engine (source available at his homepage at: http://www.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~benes/lotr/ And that complete map? How's it coming along? :bleh: |
This may seem silly... but how do I use the game engine provided by Mister Benes? When I try to open it, I just get a notepad file with alot of text...is that it? Huge fan of the game...know it pretty much inside and out ^_^ must I have Linux to use the engine?
|
The source code has to be compiled in order to be ran. You need a compiler for whatever programming language it is in.
|
It looks like its compiled in C or C++...
|
Write Michal an e-mail message and *maybe* he compiles a Windows binary. I'm guessing he doesn't because he doesn't even have Windows, but it's only my 2 euro cents.

Hey, does anyone know how to get a copy of version 1.0? I know it was a pain to run, but it had a neat teleport function that allowed you to go instantly to any point in the game. I've brought this up to a number of people, but no one seems to be aware of it. You had to type "frodolives" in the command prompt before starting the game and by pressing "t" in the game would bring up the input screen.
Does anyone remember this? |
Oh WOW I remember these games I had both of them... And... they scared me a little actually XD They didn't work so well with my computer all the time and I remember that horrible sound effect whenever the Nazgul made the ringbearer die... It was a good two years before I started the game back up after that *snicker* (I had been trying to cross the Brandywine bridge, since I knew Hobbits don't like water, you see)
|
Why would this game be abandoned already? It just came out like 3 years ago!!

Map! Hayalp!
Could really use a map here! If anyone has one!
I am going all over the shire and my pitiful mapping ability by hand drawing is not so good. I'm getting confused thinking I have been in a place and then they are different names. If I only had a map that showed bridges and rivers and roads, I'd do the rest myself. |

Help?
Hey,
I'm having a problem with my game and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I have the version of Lord of the Rings from the Interplay 10th anniversary release. The disk wouldn't work (I'd pop it in the Interplay's 10th logo would come up and then it'd go black.) so I just copied all of the files onto my hard drive and I've been playing it like that. (I've done this before and it worked fine.) I've been playing it and it keeps messing up. xP The screen either goes black and has a text running along the lower area (Along the golden border.) or it goes all pixel-y. It also does this sometimes when I saved and everytime it does it, it messes up my saved game. (I haven't even been able to get out of the Shire because of it. xP) Has this been happening to anyone else and can you tell me how to fix it? P.s. For anyone who needs to know, my computer has Windows 98 on it and I've been running the game in DOS mode. I saw a post on the first or second page that said something about the music causing an error. o-o So maybe that's what it is. >> |
Erm, did you try DOSBox? :oh:
|
Hey there lasses and lads.
Curious question - i made a post under the second part of this trully amazing game, but I thought I'd give my try here as well. Does anyone have a clue of where to get the Paragraph Book (Manual) for the Two Towers? Checked everywhere.. Couldn't find it anywhere. Any help would be appreciated - I'd love to once again play this game, but without the paragraphs.. it's rather impossible to do. Thanks! |
I played this game ages ago and there was one part that always irked me...in Lothlorien I ran into an elf who asked a question that was something like "who is the greatest enemy of all". But every answer I gave him was incorrect, I always got a reply like "that is not the answer" and I never figured it out.
Anyone else out there remember this/figure it out? Can't believe it's been 18 years since this came out... |
i haven't played this game, but maybe morgoth?
|
It should be either Morgoth or Sauron, IIRC.
Unless the question requires lateral rather than literal logic. In which case, try "Time" or "Death". |
I know it's not Morgoth...I remember trying everything that made sense in the context of LOTR, Morgoth/Melkor, Sauron, Saruman, etc...just about everyone from the Silmarillion that was even partially evil, along with more general answers (think I tried "death" but don't remember trying "time"). I'll have to try again the next time I fire this game up if I have the patience to get that far again.
Suggestions are always appreciate, and if anyone remembers the answer and what the elf gives you for answering correctly, well, it's something I haven't figured out in 18 years or found in any walkthrough, so it'd be great to put it to rest. |
Years ago, when the game was released, I bought a hint book. It was pretty big, and had all maps and quests inside.... I'll have a look if I still have it, and if the answer is in there....
L8r! Bastos |
Also try Melko, Bauglir, Belegűr - those are alternate names of Morgoth.
I've checked stuff and am pretty sure the answer should be either "Morgoth" or "Morgoth Bauglir". There is a walthrough on Gamefaqs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/dos...me/921815.html), but it makes no mention of the puzzle. |
Yeah, the walkthrough always bugged me and from looking endlessly on the Internet, that's the only one there was. It just seemed like it was missing quite a few things, like never finding the real Radagast, etc...and if anyone wanted to know, when you find the 5 items in Lorien that Galadriel has you look for all your party's stats are increased (I think all categories are give +2). I meant to do my own walkthrough ages ago but was just too lazy.

That's awesome, looks like whoever made that page (didn't see any contact info on it) spent a lot of time and effort on it...I even found a couple of places on maps that I had never explored. Thanks for sharing that...I had checked it out when it was first posted, but there's much more up there now.
|
Contact info added, though I don't check that address very often.
The thing should be reasonably complete now, though I am still updating it. |
wow man, that effort on that page is appretiated
although i'd give you a friendly advice: don't direct link your mail, because you will get shtiloads of spam from bots rather make a server-side contact form. or at least put an image instead of the actuall @ in the adress |
Thanks for the advice r.u.s.s. I've mangled that address somewhat.
Next would be a page on modding the game. (Won't be done any time soon though.) Hope you find the maps useful! |
Oh, ok, I didn't get from reading your earlier post that you (Turrog) were the one updating this page. In any case, the maps and walkthroughs are excellent...I may have to fire this game up one last time and explore a couple of things that I missed.
Any plans to do the same thing for the Two Towers? I don't know how others feel...I liked LOTR a little better, but the third one never getting made was just annoying. |
hey, another visit almost two years later...wanted to say Thank you, Turrog, been following your maps since it was only the first two...very, very helpful. still play this game often. I had questions but I will settle for one: are you able to see each point at which they refer you to a paragraph? like every single one. that'd be super helpful, to know which ones(paragraphs in the book) are just there to confuse the players xD

Erm does any1 know whats in the middle of that lava room in Moria? It's the 7th deep, in the same hallway as the room with the golden throne that has the balrog and durin's anvil etc. Theres this square area of lava off to the side, you can see an island in the middle on the map. I think you're supposed to use the ice staff to get across. I've tried it though and it tells me the staff freezes the lava but I die anyway when I walk forward.

Words of power
Also, does anyone know if the words of power Beren, Elbereth and Angmar are used for anything?

AND to add a nice cherry to this wonderful morning - Michal Benes has updated his engine! You can check it here: http://www.wonderland.cz/lotr/ And top of all - someone was nice enough to make a Windows build - so there's no excuse (if there ever was one) not to try this game. |

http://web.comhem.se/~u19128212/3f.htm It also mentions using the BEREN! word of power in conjunction with the Hawkeye quest: http://web.comhem.se/~u19128212/4b.htm His walkthrough also mentions the 7th deep of Moria with the island surrounded by lava; I don't remember anything being on it and just walking to it killed off half my party. |
I remember another question I wanted to ask; what's the deal with the Smith's ring? You find it in Old Man Willow and when you take it the tree starts flooding forcing you to escape. I'm going from memory here, but it doesn't seem like you could equip it, you'd have to trade your items to other people until it was the first thing you had in your inventory to be able to equip it, and equipping other items (like armor) would un-equip the Smith's ring. It also seemed like it would kill enemies with one hit (but I only gave it to people I didn't care about in case they were killed since I couldn't have them wearing armor and using the ring at the same time).
From reading Turrog's walkthrough, it seems like you can re-forge the ring later, which I don't remember doing. Does anyone know what effect re-forging the ring has or remember anything about the Smith's ring? |

Re the lava pool on the 7th deep of Moria: there is no island in the middle IIRC, just a shaft. If you teleport there you fall to your death. Perhaps there is a lavafall too, I don't know... I can't walk on the lava in my version of the game. As it says in my walkthrough the terrain effects take precedence and kill you even when the script should protect you. A similar thing happens in the cave in Bree. There may be version differences though. Did you use Michal's engine?
Glarung: Interesting that you got the One Ring back from the uruk who killed Drishnak. The way the script is written, you can give Drishnak either the The Ring, Smith's ring, or the signet ring, and then get it back on the 2nd deep. See my walkthrough. However you cannot actually trade the One Ring to anyone, not in the versions of the game I have at any rate -- the game won't let you! If you can get a second One Ring in some versions of the game, it is clearly a bug that they fixed. Glad you like my pages! They should be reasonably complete; everything that is in the game script should be in there, including uses of the Smith's ring and stuff. Effects such as increased damage or protection are not in there, though, since they are not in the scripts. |
Quote:
Also, you're right, the second One Ring wasn't tradeable! :) So if anyone else can pull this off, give it to someone you like and are going to keep. Too bad about the lava room. Guess we'll never know whats down there. |

So I got about 2 minutes into the game before having an issue. I was told that there was a "picklock" skill--I wanted to use it to get into Bilbo's chest in Bag End to get some money. For some reason it does not appear under the list of skills. Does anyone have an answer as to why this would be? Is it too early in the game to do this or something? I would just skip it but I'm worried I'll need the money later.

Ok...here we go again ;) I find that when you're entering the East Woods, there is no way to avoid a wolf, even during the day. The walkthrough tells me to leave when I hear one because I'm not ready for it yet, but when I leave and come back and after the second warning, it attacks. It also says that I probably won't be able to leave the woods without being attacked by a wolf, but that if I was I would probably win, and doesn't bother to tell me how to defeat it. What do I do? I tried using the sword and it didn't do anything.
|
You can't use a sword with the hobbits if I remember right, you have to equip a weapon (hobbits can use a dagger or torch at this point) and then you can attack with it. If you don't have a weapon, then you end out attacking with your hands, but you need to use Attack and not try to Use an item.

You may find some answers here: http://web.comhem.se/fradmo/lrpc/
You can give it something to eat. Turrog |
Ok thanks! I figured it out now-I just use the torch. Now another dumb question. When I go to Jolly to buy supplies, I switch to Taffy to buy some rations. When I get just within range to speak to Jolly, I'm not close enough to see the supply options when I press "get" (nothing happens). I know I just need to get closer to see the supplies, but when I move the tiniest bit closer, she immediately leaves the fellowship. Has anyone been successful with this trick? If so, what did you do, step by step?

Great game. Some how I missed this one. Any chance of the CD version being released?
|
*blink*
There was a CD version? |
The MS-DOS version is available both on disk, CD-ROM and ReelMagic. The CD-ROM and ReelMagic has additional animations from Bakshi's classic but controversial movie adaptation. The ReelMagic version is probably not commercially available any longer.
The MS-DOS version is also part of The Lord of the Rings/Two Towers Bundle. The latest MS-DOS disk version was included in Interplay's 10 Year Anthology CD-ROM collection. Some games were shipped with a clue book. From: http://www.lysator.liu.se/tolkien-ga...try/lotr1.html |
Yep. There was a CD Version. I own it. It fixes several things as well, for one, you no longer have to manually 'pick' stuff up when you find something; thus have no risk of taking a step and losing the item forever. It also added maps. Main difficulty I see in providing a download for the CD-ROM version is that it DEMANDS that you have the disk in your drive in order to play it.
|
Would you like to upload it to ftp?
I'll pm you the details if you'll be so kind as to register ^_^ |
Quote:
Main reason to play CD version over diskette is the fact that ALL text is RIGHT in the game VS in the manual as well as the automap built into the game. |
When the "Walkthrough 2" link is clicked on the game's page, it opens a new window on Abandonia on the "all games" page instead of downloading the Walkthrough 2 zip file. Is this the right place to report this? Thank you!

So I've spent probably a dozen hours trying to find a way to play this game exactly how I used to- with movie scenes and EPIC music.
So I've purchased the original CD-ROM, but I can't run it even through dosbox. If I try to run the install, it works up until the point where I set the installation path, and I get the error "Cannot install Ahiss.adl" then "Installation aborted". If I try to run the game from the disk drive, I get an error "Cannot open shapes.ndx" I haven't played this game in well over a decade, and would do anything to play it again. Is there any hope for me? |
If you perhaps post screenshots of your status window, someone will be able to help you figure it out. Please give detailed information like your mounts etc so that we've got an idea of what the problem is :)
|
Okay I'm back- I guess I'm just a noob with DosBox and what-not.
For anyone else who needs to play the game from the disc- Insert Disc Start DosBox mount d d:\ -t cdrom mount c c:\ (this gave me some silly warning) Now open the d drive- d:\ type install and run the install. It will ask where to install it to, send it to c:\lord Installation takes like 40 minutes for real :) To play WITH EPIC MUSIC AND VIDEOS AND NO PARAGRAPH READING open DosBox again and mount d d:\ -t cdrom mount c c:\lord\game c:\ lord Its incredible! Thanks for this thread though, I wouldn't have had the motivation to do it without it. If theres any way I can upload this data to the site, let me know, i'm happy to help. |
Quote:
Guess what happens if you're running on an admin account and something tries to write to C:\Windows... Yeah, NOT fun at all. That's why you should always mount a subdirectory on your drive (this also helps to keep the games organized - you'll understand the point when you reach ~100 titles in your collection). |
Adding to The Fifth Horseman's advice (thanks for explaining that, BTW!), DOS games should be in a subdirectory called "Dosgames" or "Oldgames" (whichever you prefer, I prefer "Dosgames". This will be the "root" directory when you mount it.
So when mounting the C drive using Dosgames as the subfolder, you would type: mount c c:\dosgames and press ENTER. As previously stated, it's best to keep all DOS games in one folder to keep them organized. Don't feel intimidated by the commands, they do seem daunting at first, but after becoming accustomed to them, they become like second nature. I have both the original diskette and CD-ROM version, both which I have recently acquired. I only installed the game files, and am satisfied with the movies playing from the CD. The CD-ROM version manual doesn't even have the paragraphs from the diskette version. The only thing I miss from the CD version is Bilbo turning invisible at his party in the intro. I've always liked that bit from the diskette version. Enjoy the game! |
Okay after Frodo disappeared (probably due to my mismanagement) I decided I'd just re-install and see if there is a way to play without having the original cd-rom in my drive.
I haven't found a method. However, I would like to state an easier, quicker method of installation. It saves you about 40 minutes of installation time. Assuming you have a GAMES folder... Insert Cd Rom-Start DosBox mount d d:\ -t cdrom mount c c:\games d:\ install The installation will ask you if you want to install game files to hard drive, or game files AND movies. Select just the game files. It then asks where to install it to, leave the default (C:\lord-cd). This will put the files into c:\games\LORD-CD. After this step is complete, I would restart DosBox. mount d d:\ -t cdrom mount c c:\games\lord-cd c:\ lord I've tried numerous times to copy the game data into a "dummy folder" and run that folder as a cdrom by typing "mount d c:\lorddummy -t cdrom", then mounting the c drive to the Lord-Cd folder and trying to play the game with the c-drive folder acting as the cd-rom, but it just won't work! It skips and pops and the music doesn't work... So the next test is to see if I can burn the CD-ROM data on to a CD-R, then use it as normal. |

Running the game without the actual disc should be possible though. You'll need to make a BIN/CUE image of the game disc and then mount that using IMGMOUNT. |

Manual, reference card, in-game help? But it's the most direct way and always works, I just think it sounds stupid:
"The game freezes, what should I do?" "Did you press every key?" If I don't know that there is an uncommon key command, I presume that the questioner checked that the game is really frozen. *^_^ |

It's possible, but not directly. DOSBox will work on Windows 7, and this game will work in DOSBox. :)
|
Are there special definitions for DOSBOX?
or just download and itll work? |
There's a little messing around in the DOSBox config required if you don't want to have to repeat the same basic commands every time you start the emulator. On the plus side, you only have to do that once and then you're set for good.

LOTR Enhanced Version
I've read the whole thread and seen a couple of requests for any information regarding where to find the CD version (from 1993) of this game. However, none of these requests got a decent reply, so if anyone out there has any idea where to get this CD-ROM version (if at all) please do help!
I've been scouring the internet for the last couple of hours with little luck and would love to find this game. |

If you haven't found it yet, you could try eBay. I look for it regularly to see if the sellers still carry it, and you can either type "Interplay" or "Lord of the Rings" (without the quotation marks of course) under "Computers & Networking" or "Video Games" (try both), I don't know if it is OK to post links from there in the forums, so I hope this helps. Please let me know if you find it. |
Did anyone make a mirror of Turrog's Guide to Lord of the Rings? It would be most welcome...

Hints/Tips
I've played this game since I was in grade school. I still have the original CD ROM that my parents bought for me (hence me being able to play it on my Mac). I've read the whole thread, and I'm hoping I can answer a couple of questions.
1) The elf in Lorien with the "greatest enemy of all" question. I got this right once. It was either "oneself" or "myself" or "self" or something like that. 2) Character death/ disappearance is avoidable for the most part. In Bree, Bill Ferny does not take my pony. In Moria, Gandalf doesn't die. The only time I actually lose someone is right outside Moria, when the storyline takes the ring bearer (I don't particularly mind since he really isn't my best muscle). To avoid changes like this, save your game before you get to the event point. Right before you encounter the Prancing Pony, or the Balrog, dismiss the key character i.e. Pony, Gandalf. Once the event has passed, re-recruit them. In the instance of the Balrog, all I did was have Gimli use the Golden Wheel (which doesn't kill the Balrog but just lets you escape). I then creep my fellowship back into Moria, and re-recruit Gandalf (and being careful not to get too close to the Balrog). 3) The glitches in the games are annoying to say the least. Some of them you have to be incredibly careful about. For instance, my fellowship heading into Moria consists of only Frodo, with Gandalf, Gimli,Legolas,Boromir,Aragorn. Instead of the other 3 hobbits, I insert Hawkeye, Glorfindel, Elladan, and Elrohir (total of 10). With Hawkeye, Elladan, and Elrohir, once I dismiss them, I can no longer re-recruit them. I don't know if this is a glitch just for my game or a glitch for others. But you have to be careful. 4) With Hawkeye's cave I was able to go in there before I met him. So I was able to collect everything from the chest and still not have him die. 5) There is supposedly a glitch when finding the Torc of Maladin in the hole in Bree. After the first jump, if you go any further to the east, an error occurs. What I do is walk up with the keypad as far as I can, and then move east. I save my game right before it so in case it doesn't work, I don't have to keep crawling down the hill, equipping the torch, etc. You still should be able to acquire the torc this way. I have others, but i'm in the process of a playthrough. If I can think of any more I will post them. |
Frodo423,
For your #1 the correct answer is "Despair". I tried to be subtle about it in my solution (see post above yours for link). The glitches you mention can be fixed for the most part by editing the dat files. At some time I will post a walkthrough for how to do this. You can add new areas to the map as well ... |
Old Forest
Am I the only one who has trouble with the Old Forest? I swear, every time I play, it takes me hours just to find my way out again. You're supposed to go south from the NW ruins, then east till you can go no further, then south once more, and find the winding southern road. Do not stray east, the true road is south and winding. But I can never seem to find that road until I've been wandering for hours (real time). How the heck do I consistently find the path?? I've lost so many hours of my life over this!!

Smaug and paragraphs
Does any paragraph in the addendum is genuine?
The first one talks about palantir in Shire though it may very well be a spoof...Some other says about meeting Smaug, who is said to survive the black Arrow....Are these fake paragrphs to disorient the reader or is there Smaug somewhere in the game? |

Another possible bug?
Hi, I seem to have encountered a bug in the 1.3 version. (Spoilers ahead!)
After retrieving the eight cloaks and returning to Elrond, the game does not acknowledge that I completed that quest. I believe a message should pop up when I approach Elrond, but nothing happens. I cannot TRADE the cloaks to him, nor can I USE them. Talking to him doesn't help, either. Because of this, I'm unable to receive the warmth potion (I already got the magic word from another Elf). I think this is the third time it's happened to me. Several years ago, I replayed the whole game from scratch and it finally worked. This time, restarting didn't fix the problem. Has anyone else encountered this issue before or has any suggestions? |
Perhaps someone has a savegame they can give to you? Or is the version one that can be reinstalled from a different souce, such as Squakenet.com perhaps?
|
I'm now going to imagine a terrible joke about Gandalf, the Nine Walkers and a ring of Great Power. If I elucidate, I could well be permabanned for emotionally scarring the children. :sneakrete:
|
Quote:
*Spoilers Ahead* And the bugs just keep on coming! I thought I'd warn everyone about two more issues I encountered today. If anyone would like to comment on them, please do. After finishing with Moria, I prepared for Frodo (my Ringbearer) and Sam's imminent disappearance. I traded all of their valuable items (except the One Ring, obviously) to my other party members so I wouldn't regret anything later. Later on, when I needed to dig up the scabbard for Galadriel's quest, I realized I'd left my shovel with Frodo when he got whisked away. The game wouldn't let me dig with the pick or Durin's Pick, so I needed to backtrack and obtain a new shovel. I walked all the way back to the Gorthad cavern, where I could grab a shovel without spending any silver pennies. The problem occurred while walking back east (where the map changes from the East Road to Bree). When I tried to cross over east, I got the message, "You have lost the Ring. You cannot proceed until you have recovered it", followed by "Pippin Took is dead". Every subsequent attempt to exit eastward would repeat the above, killing off yet another member of the Fellowship. Restoring an earlier save, I discovered that this doesn't happen when I leave the eastern edge of the Bree map. Luckily, I was able to buy a shovel in Bree and return to Lorien without incident. Moral of the story: make sure you relieve your Ringbearer and Sam of the shovel before they disappear to Dol Guldur. While on the topic of Galadriel's quest, I encountered the same problem mentioned in the walkthrough. After getting all five quest items, Galadriel did not reward me the stats boost. This is basically a repeat of my earlier problem with returning the black cloaks to Elrond. I tried giving all five items to a single party member, approaching/asking/trading to Galadriel and her flet guard: nothing worked. Although the stats increase isn't really essential to finishing the game, it's still maddening to not be rewarded for my troubles. Has this happened to anyone else? |

I also would never imagine that (Mi)Lady of the Rings had a clone (Frodo 423)... :frodo: :ninja: I’ve never played this game, but if you like LOTR in other genres like Action, Adventure, you could try out the Lego LOTR game. At first, I found it dull and “childish”, but the game has characteristics that set it apart from the vast majority of Lego games: possibility to explore and visit places, find treasures, solve side quests, etc. :OK: EDIT: In my opinion, I think that Lego LOTR is the best game in the Lego franchise. Obviously this is merely a personal opinion. The musics, the cut-scenes, the story, all were drawn from the LOTR trilogy. There had also been a spin-off of LOTR called The Hobbit. But with the introduction, or rather, the modifications of commands, different from LOTR and also from the lower plot in relation to LOTR, may disappoint your players... |
It's that time of the yea, or decade - again.
Here comes my by-yearly comment on this section.
Unfortunately the walkthrough site by Turrog/Dront is down http://fradmo.altervista.org/lrpc/index.htm I tried to contact him and still got no reply - still he himself has asserted that he seldom looks at that address so let's wait. Internet Archive/Wayback Machine has no working mirror - the original is image heavy and is thus mangled. :( To new readers of the thread I recommend Michal Benes engine if you manage to run it (it's not much of a stretch either) and Turrog excellent and detailed walkthrough. :OK: A nice article - if somewhat unrelated - is to be found here: https://www.filfre.net/2017/05/an-in...es-on-tolkien/ |
The Lego franchise Lord of the Rings game features OST from the Trilogy. I like them. :music:
In addition, it presents interesting Side Quests during the exploration of the Middle-Earth World. XD This exploration feature of the surrounding world is only (unfortunately!) available in the Marvel game of the Lego franchise (Final Boss would be the Big G aka Galactus). However, it does not have the magic and fantasy of the Medieval World typical of RPG... |
I managed to get in touch with Michal Benes - and he had Dr. Ont's walkthrough archived :OK:. You can find both engine and walkthrough at:

Hey folks!
Just wanted folks to know that I have recently written and published a new guide for this game. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/921...-pc/faqs/78547 Check it out! Funny story -- while working on this guide, I encountered a problem I couldn't resolve with a bug. I googled for the answer, and it led me...straight to this forum! As I was reading the thread, I saw one of the screennames talking about it here -- back in 2009 -- and realized with a start that it was MY screen name. I had already been here once with this issue, 10 years ago, and gotten help on this same thread. I had completely forgotten about it, and then found it again as I was finishing it up. Anyway, those of you who love this game, hope you enjoy the guide. You probably won't need it, but I'm happy to make my own little contribution to this aspect of 90s DOS games. |
