Eagle of Fire 28-03-2005 07:27 AM

I would post this in the appropriate pinned thread (which can be found here) but since it's also closed then I'll start a new one here.

People, the rules for signature images are quite clear. If you still don't see what I am talking about, allow me to illustrate it a little more:

Here are the rules for signature pictures:

- 60 * 450 pixels
- 30 KB in size
- no annoying or inapropriate links
- no links to simulare boards

Any signature picture breaching these will be erased.

Now, I understand the Admins around here are quite lax and tolerant when it comes to use this rule and I myself could not care less if a picture is more than 30kb in size since I'm on cable... However, I am beginning to be seriously annoyed by signatures 3, 4, 5 or even 6+ times bigger (I won't give names *points in WormPaul general direction*) taking more and more space everywhere on the board. If you still don't understand then fire up Paint (program which comes with about every version of Windows), go in Image -> Attribute and set 450 pixel as lenght and 60 pixel as height and you'll see that about every signature images around are way too big for the rule. Yes, it's very small... But that's beside the point.

May I remind you people that the first reason of this rule was exactly so you could still apply your freedom of speech via images while at the same time respecting the other members of this board who are not here to look at flashy images but actually read what others have to say?

I'd personally prefer not to see images in sigs at all, but that's only my oppinion. I know other members prefer to use an image and that's alright with me. However, I'd really prefer to see everyone conform to the rule established by Kosta a while ago so everyone keep the lenght of the post pages at a minimum.

Look at my own signature... It's a condensed one-liner related closely to both my name and my Avatar which add a lot of character to my posts without taking much place. I personnaly beleive that if you need half a page to achieve the same thing with an image, then there is a problem somewhere...

Iron_Scarecrow 28-03-2005 08:18 AM

Well I don't have a problem with images. And I don't mind ones that are too big except for when that person makes 4 or 5 posts in one page of a thread.

taikara 28-03-2005 08:43 AM

Thank you for posting this, Eagle of Fire, I've been noticing the sigs have been getting out of hand as of late, and I totally agree.

A special phoenix will be coming your way, nevermind that I already decided to draw one before you posted this ;)

And to the sig-abusing people: It's not that your newfound digital expressions aren't niftacular, but when your signature takes up more space than the actual content of your posts, something's just got to give. :(

auhsor 28-03-2005 09:18 AM

I fully agree with you Eagle of Fire. I'm pretty sure I meantioned this in another thread quite a while back. But for those with sigs that I think are too big I have a solution and its the AdBlock extension for firefox. It is so awesome. So its sig the right size or not at all for me :)

Lizard 28-03-2005 11:25 AM

I am more than probably one of these people :( :tomato:

Data 28-03-2005 11:29 AM

yes I agree to it
I tend to remove really large signatures now and then and sending a pm saying that it was too large.
Some people don't seem to understand too large though.

Havell 28-03-2005 11:49 AM

I remember the sig that triggered this: FreeFreddy's Falco pic, it took up more than two screens LOL

JJXB 28-03-2005 12:07 PM

i still think that 60 pixels is too small for a sig (plus i have to make a seperate version of each sig for abandonia :ranting: )

Maikel 28-03-2005 12:50 PM

I would feel sorry for you if I would understand your problem, but I don't.

Maybe it's time for a contest, the people who can make the best signatures within the limitations win. And the price is.... a signature they can use that is the right size!

well isn't that a bargain!

Caged 28-03-2005 01:55 PM

its not that I mind the small size, its just that it makes mine seem out of proportion. I have conformed finally and have no problem with other people's image sigs. In fact, I think they give insight into other members creative ability and thats just cool!

awwwwwwww, diddums

It's not actually that hard to resize a sig, especially in photoshop.

Tulac 28-03-2005 01:58 PM

Many sigs are breaking the rules, I still don't feel it on my 56k though, but people try to compress your picture as much as possible please(that is posting pictures in general), and I'm saying this in the name of everyone who is still on 56k...

What are rules for if not for breaking :P

resizing it isn't the issue, its the effect that has on the proportions and quality of the seperate bits of the sig (i.e. pictures, text etc)

wormpaul 28-03-2005 02:12 PM

OMG Eagle of Fire..

Wanna fight me with me.??

Then do it face to face and not this back *dirty word* behind me.. :ranting: :ranting: :ranting:

Kon-Tiki 28-03-2005 02:15 PM

I don't see any problems with the max. size of signatures. Mine's perfectly within limitations, and I like it. I don't see why anybody'd have a need for anything bigger, besides wanting to be an eyesore to the board.

JJXB 28-03-2005 02:18 PM

is this such an eyesore then?
http://img227.exs.cx/img227/7241/ngsig21ml.jpg

Kon-Tiki 28-03-2005 02:21 PM

Not in a single post, but if it's repeated on a page, it does tend to become annoying. What's more an eyesore, even in a single post, is something like Paul's sign... that huge text, then that out-of-proportions pic.

The proportions of the aren't an issue the size limit is a maximum, not a requirement so you can make it any size within those limits and not distort it. I can see how the quality thing could take some fixing though.

DeathDude 28-03-2005 02:34 PM

Sigs can be annoying at times, like mentioned in the posts before this one, especially ones that are huge indeed or contain some sort of huge flash component, which can get annoying to say the least, as long as some of the rules are enforced to an extent, I'm all for it.

Sean 28-03-2005 02:44 PM

My signature was a violation and i have removed it, hope that keeps you all happy for a little longer.. old grumpies :P

Omuletzu 28-03-2005 02:53 PM

We expect this from every member. If you respect the site's policies, and ultimately it's members, you should comply :borg:

Sean 28-03-2005 03:05 PM

Resistance is futile?

Eagle of Fire 28-03-2005 05:22 PM

WormPaul: I don't need to fight you, the rules are there for that. That's why the police officer around here arrest other cars for speed limit instead of me on the highway. :bleh:

Danny252 28-03-2005 07:44 PM

on a 1280 by 1024 resolution the sigs take up half as much space as the actual post.. Reading/looking at sigs is fun ^^

yes, having a big screen+fast connection is bliss :D (1280x1024 res + 1mb broadband = no trouble :P)

actualy yours is far longer than the allowed 60, it fits on height though. :D

No, it is perfectly right. Right-click, properties.

P.S. the ansewer is having text sigs

JJXB 29-03-2005 12:15 AM

so if text only sigs come into force here, i know who to kill

Kon-Tiki 29-03-2005 12:46 AM

A1s, try making a sign that's 60x450. You'll have a pillar-like one.

auhsor 29-03-2005 01:02 AM

Hehe, I think someone got mixed up :P.

If there is one thing that turns me off some forums, it's the size of avatars and sigs. Places such as the colplay forums don't have such a limit, and so most of the pics there get AdBlocked because they literally do take up half the screen. I think the rules here are quite reasonable, and you can easily fit what you need to in a sig pic the appropriate size.

a1s 29-03-2005 01:31 AM

I ask pardon of anyone ofended by my Immature joke

JJXB 29-03-2005 01:38 AM

there aren't any sig rules here (actually, there aren't any rules there so to speak) but not everyone abuses that (most people have text only sigs there) why? they have more pressing issues (like slagging off other forum members and exposing inexperienced newbies to hell)

Omuletzu 29-03-2005 08:39 AM

Is mine breaking the rules? I think not

Iron_Scarecrow 29-03-2005 09:05 AM

I'm not sure but I think the limit on text sigs is 5 lines. It appears you have 6 Omu.

EDIT Yes I believe the second post in the sig rules is the one.

Iron_Scarecrow 29-03-2005 09:11 AM

No it's 6, 7 if you count the break.

Havell 29-03-2005 09:14 AM

I think we have different sized screens or text. For me the first line is broken in two, maybe it isn't for you. It breaks the rules anyway.

Iron_Scarecrow 29-03-2005 09:22 AM

Yes, yes it does. I'm on 1280 x 1024, why aren't you. Personally I could never put up with anything less.

Okay i'll just cut the last two lines

450x60
AFAIK, 300x100 is more popular size. Heck, I can make a 531x198 sig that takes 30 Kb with very low compression and around 22 with higher one.

60 pixels height is really a little. Can you allow 100?

IMHO, you should go one of two possible ways:
1. Limit sig width/height and formats (nobody wants a BMP sig anyway, but for the sake of safety).
2. Limit the sig filesizes without setting any width/height limitations (or making them much looser)

Trying to keep both at once would just end up in a total nightmare - in which case maybe just remove the sigs alltogether.

180x60 signature.

TaloN 29-03-2005 05:22 PM

sorry but 60 pixels wide!!!!! thats RIDICULOUS.

your typical forum sig is these dimensions:

400x150
400x120
400x100
380x150
380x140
380x100
350x100

:rifle: whoever thought 60 was a good width imo.,

JJXB 29-03-2005 05:28 PM

its 60 height. but no matter what i still think it should be 90. my standard sigs are 400x90 but cutting 30 pixels off doesn't give me as much space to create :(

TaloN 29-03-2005 07:04 PM

is my sig that impossing? its 400x100

JJXB 29-03-2005 07:19 PM

Its bigger than most of the banners people are complaining about! :eeeeeh:

Chuck the plant 30-03-2005 03:13 PM

Why are you people getting so riled up about restrictions of signature-pictures? Do you need those pictures THAT desperatly? Are they some kind of penis-enlargement to you? Hell, most boards I post in don't allow signature-pics at all, and nobody complains about it, just because a discussion board in general is more about the quality of the posts and not about the quality of signatures.

Sheesh...

EDIT @ Magic: Look to the left. See the column with user-informations? See how far it goes down? Another mystery solved...

Sean 30-03-2005 03:14 PM

Are you trying to piss people off?

Chuck the plant 30-03-2005 03:17 PM

Well, I'd say it's not ME trying to piss others off, but it's those people that just can't seem to be able to abide to some simple rules upon which they agreed when joining this board.

It's kinda anti-social to me.

Sean 30-03-2005 03:23 PM

sorry but i dont agree

why have lines of useless qoutes in your signature? i never read them, i do however look at pictures in sigs, and to me that show i generally know whos posting, not by looking at the avatar/name over on the side.

i know of NO forums that dont allow pictures in sigs, and this is the only one i know with such ridiculously small widths.

DeathDude 30-03-2005 04:28 PM

Well gamefaqs doesn't at least you don't see hardly any, if you call typed text a picture.

Eagle of Fire 30-03-2005 10:02 PM

This been discussed countless times already and the rules are there to stay. What we are waiting for is the mods to actually implement them.

My reaction to this was because some members, who already been nammed, find his fun (he already actually claimed it some months ago on this very forum) in trying to provocate the stirr on himself to see how far he can go before the mods act on him and thus at the same time try to lessen the rules to what he wants them to be.

It all began with a sig like Talon which was almost 2 times too big but which was tolerated (or not noticed). Others noticed tough and started to do the same. And so on and so on until we got a signature with a 1 page height at a time.

Bottom line; don't expect to have the rules changed unless you have a majority of members and mods and Kosta behind you. And don't expect people to change oppinion when you can't even follow the actual rules.

Iron_Scarecrow 30-03-2005 11:15 PM

I think the 60 pixel height looks better actually, although Talons does look very nice, I can put up with Talons.

Maerlyn 30-03-2005 11:25 PM

I rule.

Omuletzu 31-03-2005 07:30 AM

Okay i got a solution:
As a moderator, i AM empowered to edit your sigs. You have until friday to comply with the rules.Starting friday, i will start to delete the sigs that are too big.And that means everyone! Also the users found breaking the rules will be proposed for a 30% warn.Let's see if people start respecting the rules now!

I have pinned this so everybody can read it! Don't say you weren't warned!

Marek 31-03-2005 07:40 AM

AHAH!!!!

Take that Sig abusers!!!! :whip: :adminpower:

TaloN 31-03-2005 01:32 PM

tbh i find this very unreasonable and frankly... argh makes me want to scream.

to me a sig is a canvas, anything bigger than 400x150 is riduclous for a sig, anything smaller than 100 in height limits the potentials .

if you want to remove my sig go for it, but frankly i find reading through this thread and across the board this attitude to everything from those with "power":

"the rules cant be changed, even if their flawed, they stay, now get back in line or well ban you."

I will be starting a petition thread to increase the allowed sig sizes to a more reasonable size. im totally for not having huge ridiculous sigs. but jesus christ 400x150 really isnt that big unless your running ur PC in 800x600 and frankly i dont know how you cope with it in that resolution.

My last words here.

Iron_Scarecrow 31-03-2005 01:42 PM

Talon you're probably the best sig artist here, and there are people with good sigs that have a height of 60 (I am not referring to mine), I'm sure you can make a good sig fitting to this size.

You know this made me remember some of my childhood times.I had a biology professor in the fifth grade, and we always had requests for him(like raise our grades and stuff like that). And you know what he said?
He said: "You always have requests for us, but have you ever respected our requests".And he is right...
We had this policy ever since the forum went online. And ever since then, many members have been breaking this rule, like saying i don't give a s**t about your rules. So before you feel offended by our rules, try to think at us.You always say mods are that, and admins are that, but have you ever thought if you're actually right?? No my friend you don't, and i know that as much as i would like to talk about it, and however way i would put it, there will always be someone breaking some rule.
I am sorry if this is your last post, but whenever law is exercised, there will always be a group who doesn't agree.I am sorry but these are the rules, and i'm sick and tired of people stepping on them.

And just for the record, i don't even know if your sig is/was breaking the rules, i have yet to recieve the official measurements.

Puffin 31-03-2005 01:59 PM

How about just disabling sigs? I really don't see why people need signatures. Sure, I've got one, but I wouldn't miss it.
Anyways, my screen is only 13", so I find signatures with pics annoying.

Please don't kill me for sharing my opinion.

TaloN 31-03-2005 02:05 PM

well as my petition was removed and even though i did ask if it was going to be removed could the admin PM me, but no i dont even get the courtesy of that.

i know what it is like to be a mod, i moderate on other forums and i know what a bitch it can be to try and keep everything under control.

frankly i cant do anything with 60px, and except in extreme cases i refuse to. its like asking someone who works on 4foot canva's to work on the back of a postage stamp. its frustrating and irritating

message to the admin who removed my thread : by the fact that a simple request was not even courteously adhered to i take it the whole thread wasnt read and this disapoints me greatly.

its just something thats been on forums everywere.

on MSN, why do people change their names to lyrics and qoutes.

its just a display board, something to symbolise you.

But the point is, I don't think it's worth bit*hing about. The limits on this forum are, in my opinion, fair.

taikara 31-03-2005 02:13 PM

It's a form of self-expression, which some people find important, some people don't. If you really hate them, it's always easier to just turn them off in your board controls than it is to try to make other people not want them, too.

Omuletzu 31-03-2005 02:13 PM

Sigs are a very good way to show us more of yourself, but you have to understand we have some rules, and how would you have felt if you imposed a rule, and a year later, after many reminders, you still find people defying you?

And i think i am pretty fair.I issued a warning before started acting, so everybody knows...

taikara 31-03-2005 02:19 PM

The thing is... if the majority of people don't like the rules, then guess what happens? They break them en masse, which leads to revolution.

Sometimes, the problems are the rules, not the people breaking them. That's why most government have ways of amending laws.

This is different, obviously, than flaming or trolling, because the people wanting bigger sigs aren't trying to hurt anyone. They just want to express themselves, and are frustrated by their limitations.

Just my opinion.

Agrees with some of the above points on sigs, not having a sig or an avatar for example, imo it gives a representation on the boards, I like having sigs, it shows the talents of people who do their own sigs and such, sometimes it can give a quick laugh as well.

Omuletzu 31-03-2005 02:46 PM

I have changed mine

taikara 31-03-2005 02:54 PM

Me, too... Thank you, TaloN! :D
(TaloN made the new awesome sig at my request, despite the limitations, whee!)

You roXx0r.

Not sure what to do with the art contest badge, now... hehe.

Should winners of Abandonia contests be allowed to use both their desired sig AND a "badge" they've won? I would think yes, personally... it just seems strange that a person should have to remove their sig in order to show they've won something. But, if not, I think I'd prefer the sig :D

Though that little space invader with the art palette was so freaking cute :(

Okay i got a solution:
As a moderator, i AM empowered to edit your sigs. You have until friday to comply with the rules.Starting friday, i will start to delete the sigs that are too big.And that means everyone! Also the users found breaking the rules will be proposed for a 30% warn.Let's see if people start respecting the rules now!

I have pinned this so everybody can read it! Don't say you weren't warned!

hehehe../

How many days did i got left Omeletzui?

Your point being...?

I can see that whole "self-expression"-thing in some way, BUT: Rules are rules. Nobody asked any of you to make yourself a nice, beautiful and BIG signature. It's something you WANT to have. But if you want to have it here, you should have it in a way that doesn't violate the rules which you accepted when you first joined the board. It's just like in real life. Maybe you feel the inner-city speed limit is way too slow and that you could drive easily faster without putting anyone in danger, and maybe you even CAN. Still the rules apply. Simple as that.

tbh i dont understand whats caused the massive suddenly we will enforce the rules and beat to death anyone that doesnt comply.

as long as the sig is not casing problems it should be left. if people have an issue with a sig they should be able to PM a mod and thus get it sorted taht way.

my sig is 400x100 pixels btw (can be found by right clicking on an image and clicking properties)

taikara 31-03-2005 03:48 PM

@Chuck: I do follow the rules. I still think there's room for change. But how do people who want change bring it about if they don't speak out in some way?

Historically, by breaking rules, and by doing so, eventually overthrowing those rules.

And sure, those people breaking sig rules could be warned, their sigs removed, banned if they're bad enough about it, but why? They're not trying to hurt anyone.

This rule was set in place the same moment this forum was born talon... ever since then NOBODY respected it.There were many reminders, the last one being eagle's.Now you have to understand rules are not something to be stepped on.If you manage to change the current setting, it's fine, if not, i hope you will resize your sig, and understand us

Kon-Tiki 31-03-2005 03:55 PM

Still, too big's too big. Take a look at Wormpaul or Ioncannon's sig. Those're huge and take up a quarter of the posting part on the screen. There have to be some restrictions that're followed, or you'll have more abominations like that, and to be frank, two of them's already two too many.

taikara 31-03-2005 03:56 PM

I think the problem is defined perfectly in this statement:

Of course you're going to hit opposition, if the sig rules haven't been enforced from the get go, people are happy with their current sigs, and all of a sudden, they're being threatened with warnings and whatnot.

It's been accepted this long, so people are probably a little upset with the sudden threat of police action after a long bout of complacency.

irrelevantjet 31-03-2005 04:04 PM

if my sig is too big by all means inform me :ok:

:bleh: i'm sorry, couldn't resist being an annoying bugger

Omuletzu 31-03-2005 04:10 PM

It's way too big jet...

irrelevantjet 31-03-2005 04:26 PM

if its way too big why didn't any of the staff members tell me when they posted in my introduction thread?

and you only seemed to tell me when i asked you to tell me :sneaky:

if it's such a big issue why is it being enforced so inefficiently?

i'm aware that given my low post count and the fact i haven't been on this forum long means i have little say in the matter, but i run my own forum also, and it's run with an iron fist, once rules are set they should be enforced

TaloN 31-03-2005 04:32 PM

however would agree though that rules should be changed to fit better with the majority of people jet?

irrelevantjet 31-03-2005 04:39 PM

i think you're missing a word in that sentence...

as for changing the rules to satisfy the majority i'd agree on that, i say a sig your size is fine, a sig my size is too big yes, but it's going to stay until i get a better one, because honestly it isn't causing anyone any trouble right now by staying as my sig...

Chuck the plant 31-03-2005 05:15 PM

@ taikara: It was a global "you" ;)

Dreadlord 31-03-2005 05:17 PM

Speaking of signatures, did I really say that Chuck?

Chuck the plant 31-03-2005 05:26 PM

You were drunk, eh? :D

It's somewhere around page 6 or 7 in the "introduce yourself"-topic... ;)

Dreadlord 31-03-2005 05:27 PM

If I were drunk then I can't remember it.

I'm thinking of making my sig a penguin striking another over the head into some water.

Well this one made me smile. :D

Btw my sig is 68x50. I don't think Talon's one to be too big, but Wormpaul's, Jet's and Ioncannon's most likely are.

But the "older" members will surely remember when Freddy used as a sig a HUGE photo of a German singer which took almost an entire screen :D Old times.
