Magic - The Gathering

Uhhm, thought I saw this one on abandonia last night. I must have dreamt

Ragnor 20-03-2005 11:25 AM

Hey don't worry you weren't dreaming, I was about half way downloading it from abandonia and now it says it doesn't exist??

DonCorleone 20-03-2005 11:32 AM

Uhoh...some mysterious kind of alien kidnapping targetted here :D

MrBackAlleySka 20-03-2005 12:31 PM

Must not have been abandonware. Good thing I waited hehee

Well this time the update of this thread wes different. I had to update it, because the latest game on our site was too big, so it was taken off.
This won't stop us however. We're slowly but surely reaching the 500 reviews (but we still need a bit over 60 of them, to get there).

original post here

Lizard 20-03-2005 02:26 PM

Anyway,I was quick enought to download it :apple: :bannana:

MrBackAlleySka 20-03-2005 02:43 PM

Oh? So it is Abandonware, just too big for the site. Gotcha, if.."IF" if is indeed abandonware, could someone send me a link to where I could get it? The only ones ive found are french (I don't trust french abandonware sites.) and spanish.

MrBackAlleySka 20-03-2005 02:51 PM

Hehe that is true, ive been meaning to write a review on something, but I haven't had the time, and every game i find, i've found on HotU, or on other abandonware sites heh. But anyways. It'll happen one day. I'm even savin' up for a good money donation.

Flop 20-03-2005 03:12 PM

Dare I ask how big it was? Just curious.

TaloN 20-03-2005 03:29 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

i was just about to go download it!!!

I HATE I HATE U ALL!!! u tempt me with it and then rip it away!!! :'( i wanted this game for so long.

im gna go thump my head into a wall now.

Sebatianos 20-03-2005 03:31 PM

The game was 76M. It was added at 3:30 AM (central European time). Unfortunately it turned out the server could hardly handle another such big game (we already have some on the site).
The game also isn't for DOS and our site is dedicated to primarily DOS games (but occasionally an exception can be made). I was hopeing this would be an exception, but it wasn't.
For any further details you can PM me.

TaloN 20-03-2005 03:36 PM

LOL is the server really that full? looks like might be time for an upgrade guys.

I hope it can be reuploaded once we switch to a better server.Even if it's windows game, it's a true classic

red_avatar 20-03-2005 06:02 PM

I downloaded the HOTU version because my original CD ROM version doesn't work anymore and I couldn't find the manalink update anywhere anymore (it's 50+Mb by itself!). The HOTU version works fine for me, pretty damn cool too to play it again.

Omuletzu 20-03-2005 06:33 PM

I have the manalink update somewhere around here, tell me if you need it

Xikarita 20-03-2005 10:48 PM

Don't waste your time, the game sucks and doesn't run under Win XP.

xcom freak 20-03-2005 11:09 PM

Downloaded it in time hehe :OK:

U should have seen Sebastianos'review pitch perfect!!

Galamir 21-03-2005 12:24 AM

well, heres the deal... i got it in time... and i can zip it down into a few zips (or rars) and mail it too ya... so PM me emails or post um here.... i dont really care and it DOES run in XP for all those who care.... you just got to run "Shandalar.exe" it doesnt update and i cant get the net working plus it doesnt go very far in the series..... but its good for all the old schoolers who remember carrion ants ownage and shivan dragon with a mana flare was god.... so drop me a line

Eagle of Fire 21-03-2005 12:47 AM

Works flawlessly on my XP computer and it's more than worth it if you're a Magic: The Gathering fan. Get all the updates and expentions tough.

It doesn't suck and it does run under WinXP. It's one of the best turnbased strategy games I ever played on PC and probably THE best for a 10 minute enjoyment.

Galamir 21-03-2005 04:24 AM

Where can i get these updates and how high does it all go? plus if it goes up to kiwigama does the AI understand all the intracies of affinity and the like... plus does the AI rebuild and play the newer deck styles like Ravager and such (forgive me ive been out of magic for a year) and decks such as Long and the like? plus are all the banned/resrticted list updated? now that that is all done im gonna have to say its an awsome game pluses all the way around :sniper: *Snipes Ravager card* :rifle:

red_avatar 21-03-2005 04:27 AM

This game is of 1996, it only has the first card deck in it plus an update. Still, there's plenty of cards and the AI doesn't make decks itself, they're predetermined. You can make your own decks though, but of course it's a bit cheating ;)

Galamir 22-03-2005 11:52 PM

Well just to redig this up.... i got a friend to host it.... so here.... http://www.arkanox.org/spark/mtgg.zip mad props for arkanox!

Props to you for trying to share this with us, but maybe you want to have a word with arkanox: the link is not working.

And the HOTU link doesn't work either...

So close, so close... yet so far away... don't do this to me, I have a heart condition...

And on eBay people still pay like €20 and more for the original.

I wanted to buy the original of this game when it first came out, but I didn't have Windows 95 back then.

Some things just aren't supposed to happen, I guess. :(

Skata 24-03-2005 10:23 PM

They have the game here (very very slow transfer rate):

If anyone uses torrents go for this one (much faster):

Yes, I know, but am I the only one having problems with that link?
Every time I try it, the download stops at one point and just doesn't continue (my record so far is 65 MB), or the download is "finished" after downloading only a fraction and the zip-file is broken, of course.
It drives my crazy. Waiting for like 3 hours and then the download just "freezes". :pissed:

Well, I'll save up some money and wait for another eBay auction...

What browser do you use? Could it be a FireFox problem?

Any Internet Explorer users (shame on you!) with that problem?

BeefontheBone 25-03-2005 11:37 AM

Just get a DL manager; essential for any file over about 30 megs IMO especially if you're not on broadband.

No never had this kind of problem, although i was banned once from their server

EDIT Be sure to set the "number of simultaneous connections to 0", to avoid getting banned. If you get REGET, i can tell you exactly where to look, if not, just search for this feature under the heading "download properties"

*Magic: The Gathering

Well let me start with my favourite racing game ever ... I can't remember how many hours I wasted with this game.

1 - Road Rash

Unfotunately I used to own it, but gave it away as a present to someone who enjoyed it as much as me. Spread the love I always say.

2 - Magic The Gathering

Great replay value. Fun game when you looking for something different.

3 - Make an Interactive Fiction Section

All those Infocom oldies still have a place. Besides its a great way to get people to read and have fun at the same time. It's very educational you know :P

Tom Henrik 30-04-2005 10:09 AM

As for the Interactive Fiction wish of yours....

Enjoy :ok:

Malachai31 26-07-2006 08:18 PM

Just downloaded Road Rash but was wondering how you access the new bikes?

The Fifth Horseman 27-07-2006 11:31 AM

Magic the Gathering is 1997... we've got some 1997 Microprose titles listed as Abandoned, but MTG is not on the list

What we need to check is whether the game is sold or not. However, I am afraid it might be too big for the site.

The Fifth Horseman 28-07-2006 09:02 AM

Dang, didn't notice this thread was a necro.

Malachai, we're going to have a little talk.

As for the thread...

(SLAM!)

Luchsen 07-08-2007 06:03 PM

Road Rash | 1996 | Electronic Arts | [REJECTED: ESA]

Sebatianos 07-08-2007 10:47 PM

Another thing about this game...

WE ALREADY HAD IT ON THE SITE!!!

I remember reviewing and updating it (it was thought OK at the time - before the ESA visit and explaining the rules), but Kosta removed it the next day, because the archive was too big (hopefully the server we'll have at the time it's abandoned again will handle it better). But it's also not a DOS game (but then again, some other great games aren't either).

The Fifth Horseman 08-08-2007 09:09 AM

Another three things:

1. It's not too big anymore, at least as far as I can determine.

2. As far as I could find out, the precise dates when 10 years pass since publication are:
7th March 2007 - Magic the Gathering (main game)
2nd September 2007 - Spells of the Ancients (expansion)
15th January 2008 - Duels of the Planeswalkers (expansion/standalone)

3. I've got the full version on the basic MTG in original... English version, at that, so I could make an ISO of it for the Cellar.

The Fifth Horseman 07-09-2007 06:09 AM

Added to Oldwarez List.

Luchsen 02-01-2008 09:27 PM

It's 2008, and therefore unprotection time. :D

Luchsen 02-01-2008 09:41 PM

BranjoHello 04-02-2008 03:39 PM

What about this game and its expansions, will they be on Abandonia soon? :wondering:

Sebatianos 04-02-2008 04:09 PM

Somebody should talk to Kosta about it. I don't have the update anymore, and I don't feel like making it again unless I'm absolutely sure it won't be removed from the site.

Doink 04-05-2008 09:37 PM

15th January 2008 - Duels of the Planeswalkers (expansion)
above is a qoute from another thread from the 5th horseman has this game been uploaded?

Dave 05-05-2008 01:55 PM

You mean this right?
http://www.mobygames.com/game/magic-the-gathering

I don't know, perhaps Romano have it/them into an archive.

It's an important brand, I don't know whether it's a good idea to declare it as Abandonware or not.
Is this game the same you're talking about? => Link.

Unfortunately not :(

The Fifth Horseman 05-05-2008 02:30 PM

I've got the "plain" M:TG on a CD. HOTU had an archive with DOTP a while ago.

As David pointed out, it's still sold on Amazon Marketplace - since the query whether we consider it a reliable source or not remains unresolved, the verdict will have to wait.

Eagle of Fire 05-05-2008 03:24 PM

I thought it was deemed Abandonware a loooong time ago, but wasn't hosted on our site because the filesize was way too big?

Sebatianos 05-05-2008 04:03 PM

Eagle is right. Well, it wasn't 100% sure if it was abandonware - it was before the ESA incident. I reviewed and uploaded the whole game and it was on Abandonia for about one night, then Kosta removed it, because the server got too busy. It's a very big file and there were probably many downloads of it.

I haven't got the review anymore (nor the screenshots), but I'd love to review it again (remember most of the previous review anyway). But on this one I'd deffinetly want a clear OK from Kosta personally.

The Fifth Horseman 05-05-2008 04:04 PM

Was, then wasn't.
Remember the rules regarding our definition of AW have changed in last couple years.

Sebatianos 05-05-2008 04:09 PM

Well, I guess it is AW (we weren't even checking back in those days - Abandonia was still offering games like Loom and Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis back then).

But the last set file size limit was 100MB (as far as I remember it) and the archive is bigger then that limit...

Let me put it like this, as soon as I get a gree light from Kosta to update it, the game will be up within a day (maybe even faster if Kosta kept the review somewhere). And I do fully trust you guys with your ability to determine what is and what isn't abandonware (but it might still be sold).

The Fifth Horseman 05-05-2008 04:51 PM

Quote:

AFAIK, there is a CD-Rip version about 80 MB large.

We'll see what Kosta says about the Amazon situation and then decide.

Sebatianos 05-05-2008 04:56 PM

What compresion tool is being used?

I thought here at Abandonia it was agreed that we use only ZIP (compatible with win XP extractor - remember the problems with certain of your files that people couldn't extract?) and that once you extract there is the game folder already (not other compressed files to unpack.

If so, is that CD rip still under 80MB?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the game back on site, especially because it will draw people to Abandonia, but I'm just sceptical...

Eagle of Fire 05-05-2008 05:39 PM

I think the file is in zip format and was either 82 or 84 megs and something. Unfortunatly I don't think I still have that file. It was lost with almost 2 gig of archive when my brother "lost" my USB key.

Sebatianos 05-05-2008 06:22 PM

OK, my file is 176MB (but that's with sound). If I delete all the sound the archive is 82MB. That would work, but it would be a shame to lose the sound (the music is really good).

Let's wait for Kosta's answer, but since the game is abandonware it should be OK as soon as there are no sold copies (except second hand).

Eagle of Fire 05-05-2008 06:50 PM

I guess you simply mean deleting the music. The game had all the sound effects active when I played that game.

_r.u.s.s. 05-05-2008 10:31 PM

um, why would rip mean different compression or something? if somebody says that rip has 80 mb that meanas that normal game has 80 mb. it's not so strange for a rip to have 80 mb (since there are no animations some music and stuff..)

and i barely think that some compression tools'd differ in compression rate that much

Yes, I'd keep the sound effects. It's a shame to lose the music, but those files do make over 90MB of difference.

just wondering if anyone has Magic the gathering as i used to love playing that game and would love to see if my rose tinted view of the past lives up to my weary old eyes :whistling:

The Fifth Horseman 23-11-2008 11:05 AM

Lulz, _r.u.s.s. - those are cards for the CCG the computer game is based on!

Publisher = Microprose => ESA subsidiary => 10 years of active protection.
Out of active ESA protection now.

Unfortunately: 1, 2, 3 and 4 separate listings on Amazon.

The PC Magic: The Gathering game was deemed Abandonware a loooong time ago... But unfortunately the file size is way, way too big for Abandonia to host it.

90 MB CD-Rip.

Eagle of Fire 23-11-2008 05:25 PM

Magic the Gathering

Hey man, I love what you guys do for this site and everyone who uses it. But may I give a suggestion for a new game to be added?

Magic the Gathering (microprose, 1997)

Why? For these reasons:

1. I can't find it for sale at any legitmate online site (downloads only, nobody sells the pc cd game hardcopy)

2. Abandonware, as I would define it from my experience with this site, is software that is not being bought or sold. Am I wrong?

3. I conclude this game is abandonware because all the people holding copyrights to it could care less about selling it, so why don't we (and i mean you admins, really :) ) offer it for free?

I think that was uploaded like two or maybe three years ago, but removed in hours. I was lucky enough to get it before the post was removed, too bad that the hardrive got wasted later. :whistling: That game hooked me on for a while, it was a unique idea.

Really? Awesome.

We got one in our servers, uploaded by Sebatianos apparently.

The only question after checking that one is the duration of the protection. Only Battlegrounds is sold.

BranjoHello 07-01-2009 11:23 AM

Yeah, I can see if I can get my rip working - but Shandalar had a speed issue - the game was running much too fast even back on my P3 450 so I fear to see how fast it runs now on my Quad core.

AlumiuN 10-07-2009 10:40 AM

It's not a speed issue I have here - it's an illegal exception. :p

TheChosen 10-07-2009 12:15 PM

Shandalar is working on my computer. I did have problems with it before though; nothing on the screen didnt load or was in black until I clicked some button or moved the mouse over it.

Cant remember how I fixed it. Maybe the game folder had to be specifically named.

I'll go back and try it again. It did work for a bit, and then fails. But then, so does everything on my computer. Having only 512 mB of RAM has its downside. :p

So is this project dropped now? :/

I have a link to a version of this game that appears to run fine in windows xp. The problems are its been reprogrammed to work so if that isn't a problem unto itself, you would probably also need permission from the guy that got it working to host it on here.

It has shandalar with no speed issues, working duels, gauntlet, fully working sound, optional new cards and card art and even working multiplayer if you add some other patches.

Not going to post the link until I get the go ahead from an admin though.

You'd also need a new reviewer, since Alumiun is kind of busy.

A modified version of the game, fully compatible with modern systems and with literally hundreds of cards added directly from the CCG (originally it had 500 or so).

So does that mean that this game will never be available on Abandonia? I'm sure the protection has long since passed and I don't have the first clue about torrents. Please make it available here. Pretty please?

Japo 23-06-2013 07:05 PM

Since this request is approved (it's in the "approved requests" board), the game could be made available on Abandonia as soon as we get it reviewed.

Actually, it's not exactly right. :)

There are two games in one: tournament mode (pure CCG) and Shandalar (strategy game, based on same CCG). And when tournament was expanded, and still expanding very far, Shandalar stays the same in terms of cards and gameplay.

But it is, of course, modified to playability too.

Well I would review it for you with pleasure - if it will run on my Win XP machine (I do have DOSbox on here, but I'm not sure how well it runs). Unfortunately my DOS set-up machine is not currently in the same country as me. At least I am willing to give it a shot if you could let me have the game for review.

Pretty sure it run well on XP. I remember playing this game on this very machine a few years back.

Thanks! I just sent you a message with a private download link.

The game seems to be for Windows 95. It has to be quite possible to run it in XP, probably directly. Otherwise, if you have problems, we can help you at the troubleshooting board; I recommend to take a look at this guide first of all if it doesn't work directly from XP. At least with Virtual PC it should be sure to work.

I've noted down the reservation over here for bookkeeping.

Smiling Spectre 25-06-2013 06:55 PM

I am heavily recommend to get modified version of game. Otherwise you'll get in 2 problems very soon: somewhat erroneous card overlay (text hints are missed) and restriction for screen resolution (game supports only 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. Any other resolution, and you'll run into errors in deck editor mode).

But, on the other hand, only original CD-version have interactive tutorial written on Macromedia Director (and it doesn't work on systems newer than Win98).

If you insist to use original version - install free Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft and found ACT patch for MtG. It must fix both mentioned problems on Win98. :)

Musteriuz 26-06-2013 03:00 PM

Thanks for all the info guys. I will do what I can and ask if I get stuck.

*Edit - Hi Spectre, I tried getting the modified version, but whilst the download only took 40mins, the seeding has been going on for more than 12 hours, so that doesn't seem a viable option either.
